  • Everyone to the Business Review of the 2014 Rugby League Year. I
Welcome everyone to the Business Review of the 2014 rugby league year. I start by paying my respects to the traditional owners of the land on which we meet today, The Gadigal people of the Eora nation, their elders past and present and their emerging leaders. The intention of the Business Review is to let our game’s key stakeholders know how the business performed in 2014 and what we’re focusing on in 2015. In my remarks I’ll comment on the results for 2014 and some observations on where our focus has been and where it will go during the next year. After this, our CEO Dave Smith will present to you in some detail on the business, and Todd Greenberg, our Head of Football, will talk to the football. Last year when we reported our results, it was the end of Dave’s first year as Chief Executive and the end of the first year of our new broadcast rights deal. Today we are further down the road, the achievements are many, but the challenges are also clearer to us all - as is the thinking on how to address them. 2014 in almost every aspect was a very good year and we should all feel the game of rugby league is in good shape and is getting stronger. The metrics to support this are very clear as you will see on the following slides. Of fundamental importance, financial performance has once again been very strong. Dave will take you through this in some detail shortly, but we are extremely pleased with the $49.9 m surplus we have delivered while we are simultaneously building the capability a professional organisation of this nature requires.

Sir Peter Leitch Club AT MT SMART STADIUM, HOME OF THE MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS 1st February 2017 Newsletter #155 Nines About to Hit By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan T IS not enough that they are blowing the cobwebs off Ruben Wiki, they have named the bloke captain of Iour Downer NRL Nines team. Fair play, Ruben is as close to a legend as it is possible to be in our game, and if they want him as captain, so be it. There is a fair bit of experience in our squad, and the usual smattering of NYC players, for Eden Park on Feb- ruary 4 and 5. This is Nines No 4, and four seems to be a number featuring in our side, since Ruben was named in the team just a day or two before he turned 44. For those of us for whom 44 is just a distant memory, it is still not that far back that I can’t recall I would not have lasted two minutes playing Nines. Lasting two minutes at anything at my age is a problem, but that is another story altogether. Our new head honcho Stephen Kearney has gone for the experienced Shaun Johnson, Ryan Hoffman, Tu- imoala Lolohea, Solomone Kata and Blake Ayshford - who have played in all three of the previous Nines tournaments. Wiki was no mug at the game back in the day either, even if the day was in 1996-97, when he was part of the Kiwis squad that won World Nines titles.

Sir Peter Leitch’s Mad Butcher Club AT MT SMART STADIUM, HOME OF THE MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS 20th November 2015 Newsletter #99 Rest Jonah in Lomu Peace 1975 - 2015 O SAY I was shocked to get home to New Zealand to the news that we had lost a good man with the Tpassing of Jonah Lomu is an understatement. I simply could not believe it. Only last week we were tweeting each other about meeting up for lunch. I have had the pleasure of knowing Jonah for many years, and I can not claim to be his best friend, but there was certainly a mutual respect between us. I agree with all of those who have been saying that many Kiwis really did not understand just how big Jonah was. I remember going with the Kiwis to the UK in 2005, and to be frank, wearing black jerseys everywhere, peo- ple often mistook us for rugby players and wanted to talk about Jonah. There were huge billboards with his image on it and you have to remember that big sports companies like adidas like their pound of flesh, so when their playing days are over, many players are quickly discarded. It was never like that for Jonah, the opposite in fact, with adidas using him as a global ambassador for the brand, and for rugby. It has all been said, the gentle giant, the amazing athlete, the humble man – and all of it tis true. He will be sadly missed and I know you will all join me in sending our condolences to his family.

Extract from Hansard [ASSEMBLY — Thursday, 24 October 2019] p8366d-8367a Mr Stephen Price; Mr Paul Papalia NATIONAL RUGBY LEAGUE NINES TOURNAMENT 950. Mr S.J. PRICE to the Minister for Tourism: Before I ask my question, on behalf of the member for Kalamunda, I welcome the representatives from Wheels in the gallery this afternoon. I refer to the McGowan Labor government’s significant investment in events that drive economic growth across WA’s tourism and hospitality sectors and helps to create more local jobs. Can the minister update the house on what the National Rugby League Nines tournament will mean for the state’s tourism industry? Mr P. PAPALIA replied: I thank the member for his interest in tourism and, I assume, rugby league. I do not know whether he is a rugby league fan. However, there are plenty of them in the house. The Deputy Premier is one of the biggest fans in Western Australia. It was great when a couple of days ago we began three days of announcements in my portfolios and an announcement about the NRL Nines coming to Western Australia next year on 14 and 15 February for an extravaganza of Rugby League’s preseason. This is its preseason event. I would speculate that it will be much more successful and interesting than the AFLX. This will be a really interesting, good event. In the NRL Nines, all 16 men’s teams will be represented. Most of the top-end players will be competing and there will be four NRLW teams, including the Broncos, the current champions.
