George Ngaronga led the way for the Lions with some stinging defence as they repelled the Hunters first half attacks. With the wind behind them the Hunters could not turn field advantage into points in the first half. With the scores tied at nil all at halftime it was going to be tough for the defending champions in the second half. The Roger Burt coached side however are determined to be recognised as long term heavyweights in the WRL premier competition and their composure and belief in each other shone through in the second half. The Hunters opened the scoring in the 43rd minute with a try to Junior Tupufia and followed it up 6 minutes later when Sean Gielen-Relph dotted down. Wainui hit back with a try to Wetini Mokomoko which EJ Albright converted to narrow the Hunters lead. The match was sealed when Jay Kaulave crossed with 5 minutes remaining for his first try which was followed by his second right on fulltime. Hunters 20- Wainuiomata 6 Vikings slay Panthers The Porirua Vikings head the table after 2 rounds following a resounding 84-4 victory over the Petone Panthers at Ascot Park. Chozen Rameka and Vaá Kirisome led the way up front for the Vikings with Rameka scoring the first 2 tries for the home team. The young Petone side hit back inside the 15 minute mark with a try to big Tiaii Hune who made a rampaging 30 metre run to the line. At 8-4 and with the wind behind them Petone were settling into the game well but the Vikings experience and superior skills soon kicked into gear as they ran in 6 further tries before the break to lead 42-4. The second half saw the Vikings remain in control and deny the Panthers any chance of a comeback as they scored repeatedly within the set from the kick off. Vena Lamsam ran in 4 tries for the Vikings whilst Sean Playford kicked 6 from 7. Eels remain undefeated Some bulldozing play by the Te Aroha forwards allowed the Eels to comprehensively beat the Upper Hutt Tigers 64-8 at Te Whiti Park on Saturday. After beating the defending champions University the previous Saturday, the Eels showed again they were in no mood to be taken lightly when they scored a try from their first offensive set in the game. As much as the win was one sided, there were at times some moments for the young and inexperienced Tigers side to treasure, but after scoring an early try, Te Aroha ensured its first home game of the season was always going to have a tick in the winning side of the ledger. The Eels led 36-4 at halftime and in the second half it continued to gain overlaps as they continued to draw in the Upper Hutt defence, before spinning the ball wide for the outside backs to seize and take full advantage. Te Aroha hooker Danny Walker had an outstanding game with some snappy ball distributions, while his acting team captain and former Wellington representative Mike Nathan, scored two tries. Upper Hutt second row Iona Keni showed great determination for the Tigers, who were rewarded for their patience and persistence with their second try of the game, seconds after the fulltime hooter had been sounded. Carey Clements Randwick defeat determined St George Ray Lesoa continues to show his class with a superb 4 try effort for the Kingfishers whilst his centre partner David Saumolia racked up another 2 tries in their 48-20 defeat of the Dragons. After trailling 22-10 at halftime the Dragons climbed back into the match to close the score to 22-20 with 20 minutes remaining. Last year’s grand finalists were not to be denied however and took the game away from St George in the last period. New Zealand Rugby League will stage three clashes in the inter- national showpiece, including the final at Westpac Trust Stadium on November 15. The NZ Kiwis face a Pacific Island team - either Fiji or Samoa - at Whangarei’s Toll Stadium on November 1 and England at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin on November 8. They will kick off their campaign against archrivals Australia in Brisbane on October 25, as a curtainraiser to England taking on the Pacific champions. “Bearing in mind we will be co-hosting the World Cup with Aus- tralia in four years, this is a great opportunity for us to show our capability,” says NZRL chief executive Phil Holden. “But it’s also a huge challenge, both on and off the field. “On one front, we may be up against the other three semifinalists from last year’s World Cup, with England, in particular, itching to avenge their semifinal loss to us at Wembley. “And then we’re looking for Wellingtonians to show their passion for rugby league and support what promises to be a memorable final. “Auckland has already shown it’s ready for major World Cup fixtures, after successfully hosting the NRL Nines. Wellington prides itself as a sporting Mecca and we’re confident local fans can also support an international spectacle of this calibre.” Where is NZ Rugby League headed in the next four years? The local league communities now have a chance to see the vision for the game, with NZRL chief executive Phil Holden beginning his national tour to present his “Playbook” strategic plan. • 2012 Football Club Chairman’S Report
MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2012 FOOTBALL CLUB CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Going back to back in the NRL competition has proven too big a task for the defending Premiers each year since 1992, but I can proudly say that in 2012, Geoff Toovey and the boys gave it a red hot go. Despite a host of difficulties, including pre-season disruptions, travelling to the UK for the World Club Challenge, injuries, suspensions and off field distractions, the team, led by Co-Captains Jamie Lyon and Jason King, rallied together magnificently to finish in the Top 4, falling only one game short of another Grand Final appearance after defeat by eventual 2012 Premiers, the Melbourne Storm. Whilst we may not have achieved our ultimate goal of successfully defending our 2011 title, we should not lose sight of just how difficult it is to remain near the top of the NRL competition each year. Accordingly, we should all be extremely proud of what was still a very successful 2012 season for the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. In his first year as Head Coach, Geoff Toovey did a fantastic job despite a less than ideal preparation and I am sure he is itching to get into 2013, knowing the experience of his first year under his belt will stand him in good stead for the challenges that lie ahead. With the nucleus of the side being retained long term, particularly our young halves, Keiran Foran and Daly Cherry-Evans, we can all be justifiably confident that a 9th premiership is well within our reach in coming seasons.

  • Everyone to the Business Review of the 2014 Rugby League Year. I
Welcome everyone to the Business Review of the 2014 rugby league year. I start by paying my respects to the traditional owners of the land on which we meet today, The Gadigal people of the Eora nation, their elders past and present and their emerging leaders. The intention of the Business Review is to let our game’s key stakeholders know how the business performed in 2014 and what we’re focusing on in 2015. In my remarks I’ll comment on the results for 2014 and some observations on where our focus has been and where it will go during the next year. After this, our CEO Dave Smith will present to you in some detail on the business, and Todd Greenberg, our Head of Football, will talk to the football. Last year when we reported our results, it was the end of Dave’s first year as Chief Executive and the end of the first year of our new broadcast rights deal. Today we are further down the road, the achievements are many, but the challenges are also clearer to us all - as is the thinking on how to address them. 2014 in almost every aspect was a very good year and we should all feel the game of rugby league is in good shape and is getting stronger. The metrics to support this are very clear as you will see on the following slides. Of fundamental importance, financial performance has once again been very strong. Dave will take you through this in some detail shortly, but we are extremely pleased with the $49.9 m surplus we have delivered while we are simultaneously building the capability a professional organisation of this nature requires.

Sir Peter Leitch Club AT MT SMART STADIUM, HOME OF THE MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS 21st September 2016 Newsletter #140 By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan RIKEY DID the Vodafone Warriors get hammered at the weekend. The constant theme was that we Cneed a player clearout. That is hardly groundbreaking stuff, but what was, was that players were named. Hugh McGahan singled out Manu Vatuvei and Ben Matulino, arguing both had failed to live up their status as two of our highest paid players. The former Kiwi captain said Warriors coach Stephen Kearney could make a mark by showing the pair the door, and proving to the others that poor performances won't be tolerated. “Irrespective of his standing, Manu Vatuvei has got to go,” McGahan told Tony Veitch. “And again, irre- spective of his standing, Ben Matulino has got to go. They have underperformed. If you're going to make an impact I'd say that's probably the two players that you would look at.” Bold stuff, and fair play to the man, he told it like he saw it. Kearney, on the other hand, clearly doesn’t see it the same way, since he named both in the Kiwis train-on squad, and while he acknowledged they had struggled this year, he backed himself to get the best out of them. In fact he went further, he said it was his job. “That's my responsibility as the coach, to get the individuals in a position so they can go out and play their best.

THE ACTION KICKS OFF THIS SATURDAY NIGHT Sir Peter Leitch Club Newsletter RLWC 2017 24th October 2017 It’s 4 days until the Kiwis play # their first game of the 2017 RLWC 193 Back The Kiwis By Enjoying Lunch By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan E ARE only days from the kick-off of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, with Australia and England W– in what will be a hell of a match - doing the honours on Friday night. Of course the Kiwis take on Samoa on Saturday night at Mt Smart, and that one should be a good game too. League legend Olsen Filipaina is taking the ball out, which is pretty cool given he has represented the Kiwis and Samoa. The game I am looking forward to is the Kiwis v Tonga in Hamilton, because there is not going to be a lot of love lost when those two sides meet, after everything that has gone on. Before a ball is kicked I have the Kiwis lunch at the Ellerslie Events Centre to look forward to on Friday. When Pete asked if I would take it on with Gordon Gibbons and Tony Feasey, I foolishly said yes, not want- ing to let Pete down. But in truth Gordon has been amazing and we have an incredible line-up of Kiwis greats taking to the stage, and players with a long history of World Cup and test glory in attendance. I have been to several of Peter’s Kiwis lunches and enjoyed every one of them.

TO: NZRL Staff, Districts and Affiliates and Board FROM: Cushla Dawson DATE: 14 April 2009 RE: Media Summary Tuesday 07 April to Tuesday 14 April 2009 Give us a chance: WITH France joining Australia, Great Britain and New Zealand to make up an international quad-nations series this year, Fiji Bati centre Darryl Millard has called on the Pacific Nations to be considered too. After the 2008 Rugby League World Cup shake up of the international calendar by the Rugby League International Federation, it has been proposed that a Pacific Cup be held this year. The winner of the tournament enters the 2010 Rugby League Four Nations tournament (consisting of Australia, New Zealand, England and a qualifying nation). A Pacific Cup is also proposed to be held in 2011. Jones not available for Kiwis: He still has that magic touch but little general Stacey Jones has ruled himself out of contention for New Zealand's clash with Australia next month at Lang Park. The scheming halfback said he would not be available for selection for the Brisbane match which takes place on May 8, the day after his 33rd birthday. After one year out of rugby league, Jones made a shock return to the NRL this season and has shown he still has a knack for creating tries. Linwood win 17-try see-saw: Former Warrior Kane Ferris scored a match-winning try on the stroke of fulltime as the Linwood Keas snuck home in a 94-point rugby league thriller against east-side arch rival Aranui. Linwood's Canterbury Bulls hooker Nathan Sherlock and Aranui Eagles back Tim Rangihuna both scored four tries as the Keas clung to a 48-46 victory at Rugby League Park on Saturday.

Sir Peter Leitch Club AT MT SMART STADIUM, HOME OF THE MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS 12th July 2017 Newsletter #178 So Long Legend, And Thanks For The Memories By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan T IS as we all knew. The days of being blinded by the sunlight flashing off Manu Vatuvei’s gold teeth are Iover. The big fellah is off to Salford in the English Super League, having been granted an early release from the contract he had with us to the end of the 2018 season. It is a strangely empty felling, given I have been cheering for the bloke for a decade. “Manu is a club legend,” managing director Jim Doyle said. “We didn’t make this decision lightly but after years of service we didn’t want to stand in his way.” I can’t say anything this week that I did not say last week, so farewell Warrior No 115, and thanks for the 226 appearances, some of them great, some not, but you will always be “The Beast” to me, even if, having come to know you a little bit, it is the most ill-suited name they could possibly have given you. I will miss your presence, I will miss your smile, I will miss your laughter. I will miss your carries, I will miss your all or noth- ing approach, and I will miss your tries. It is going to be a long time before anyone overhauls that all-time try-scorer record of 152.
