Who were the people to first inhabit the northern and southern continents? Why did they come? How did they get here? How long was their migration? A possible narrative suggests that the movement of ancient people to the New World began when they crossed a land bridge that once existed between what we today call Siberia and Alaska, a bridge that later dis- appeared because of glacial melting and is now covered by water and known as the Bering Strait. It is also possible that these early people were motivated by wanderlust or the need for a new source of food. Perhaps they were searching for a better climate, and maybe they came for religious reasons, to escape persecution or find a more congenial area to practice their partic u lar beliefs. -

Obama, Structural Contradictions, and Imperatives (A Post Script)
Obama, Structural Contradictions, and Imperatives (A Post Script) Mehdi S. Shariati, Ph.D. Professor, Economics, Sociology and Geography Kansas City Kansas City Community College This paper is a post script to an article titled “Systemic Imperatives, contradictions and the Democratic Process in the USA” which I published in 2009. It is a reflection on Obama’s presidency in light of the structural contradictions and imperatives and in particular it is an outline of the attack on or in defense of the person of Obama and as the President while neglecting the structural contradictions and systemic imperatives. By structure I mean an ensemble of powerful groups with material interests, rules and hierarchy. Structural contradictions are contradictory, problematic and irresolvable relationship between various components of the structure, and the systemic imperatives are the commandments—essential policy approach for survival of the structure (indebtedness, and mechanism of implementing social imperialism). Obama presents a unique case at the level of agency as did his role models President Abraham Lincoln, President John F. Kennedy and President Ronald Reagan. He is an African- American, an idealist, a scholar and aims at consensus building. But Obama appeared on the scene at a difficult time. On the domestic front, the economic, social and political life was characterized by fear and uncertainty and on the foreign front, the immediate future of global political and economic conditions were uncertain at best. The uniqueness was also 1 evident in the fact that the long and expensive political campaign for the Presidency of the United States began against Obama in the first year of Barack Obama’s Presidency which by comparison was unprecedented. -

Trump administration has been corruption. Since his first day as president, when Trump took the wholly unprecedented step of refusing to divest1 from his private businesses, his administration has been characterized by an unending effort by him, his family, and his senior advisers to abuse their political power for personal gain. Of course, those efforts started long before Trump was elected; in just one example, Trump had the federal government pay him more than $1.5 million2 for the Secret Services’ use of his private plane during the campaign. These efforts to enrich himself and those around him continued through the inauguration, in which Trump abandoned past practice to allow for unlimited donations from wealthy individuals and corporations so he could raise record sums—reportedly more than $107 million. He then used that money to help his friends, including paying a company owned by Melania Trump’s friend and senior advisor, $26 million3 to help plan the event. -
Analysing the Discourse on Corruption in Presidential Speeches in Nigeria, 1957- 2015: Systemic Functional Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis Frameworks
Analysing the Discourse on Corruption in Presidential Speeches in Nigeria, 1957- 2015: Systemic Functional Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis Frameworks Hakeem Olafemi Ogunmuyiwa A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Linguistics, University of the Western Cape. April, 2019 Supervisor: Professor Bassey E. Antia http://etd.uwc.ac.za/ Key Words Corruption Presidential speeches Nigerian presidents Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) Discourse Appraisal Transitivity Ideology i http://etd.uwc.ac.za/ Abstract Corruption as a concept is viewed differently by various disciplines, but there seems to be consensus that it relates to the misuse of public office for private gain. Studies in the social sciences, mainly political science, economics, sociology and law, have provided valuable insights into the subject, for example, its causes, manifestations and consequences. In a country such as Nigeria, corruption is said to have cost the country up to $20 trillion between 1960 and 2005, and it could cost up to 37% of its GDP by 2030 if the situation is not urgently addressed. The paradox, however, is that although all successive leaders of the country have consistently articulated their anti-corruption posture in national speeches, they get accused by their successors of not being tough on corruption both in word and in deed. Regrettably, there have been relatively few close textual analyses of presidential speeches carried out within analytical frameworks in linguistics that have the potential of revealing how presidents can simultaneously talk tough and soft on corruption, a contradiction that could well explain the putative anti-corruption posture of the country’s leaders and the ever deepening corruption in the land. -

The Spirit of Networks: New Media and the Changing Role of Religion in American Public Life
THE SPIRIT OF NETWORKS: NEW MEDIA AND THE CHANGING ROLE OF RELIGION IN AMERICAN PUBLIC LIFE BY KEVIN HEALEY DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communications in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2011 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Clifford G. Christians, Chair Professor Robert McChesney Professor John Nerone Assistant Professor Jonathan Ebel ii ABSTRACT The Spirit of Networks examines the implications of new media for the future of American religious politics. I argue that we are at a critical juncture in both media and religion, similar to the early days of radio broadcasting. The outcome of that earlier juncture involved an increase in media commercialization and the proliferation of conservative evangelical broadcasters—developments which paved the way for the emergence of the Religious Right. Today, technological and generational shifts have the potential to alter the course of American religious politics. Younger people are more wary of political partisanship and religious hypocrisy, and are more likely to use new technologies as tools of political engagement. These shifts have led some journalists and researchers to pronounce the death of the Religious Right and the emergence of a new Religious Left. The research presented here assesses the potential outcome of this critical juncture by examining the impact of new media technologies on public discourse at the intersection of religion and politics. Through qualitative analysis of newspaper articles, cable news transcripts, and blog commentaries, I demonstrate how new media tend to generate debates about the authenticity and sincerity of public figures.
