2 England - Slovenia Saturday 15 November 2014 - 18.00CET (17.00 local time) Match press kit Wembley Stadium, London Match background

England have won both of their previous encounters with Slovenia, though the results of those games suggest that their UEFA EURO 2016 meeting could be a close-run thing, Match background • The sides first met in a friendly game at Wembley on 5 September 2009, Fabio Capello's England running out 2-1 winners. Frank Lampard's penalty (31) and a deflected strike from (63) establishing their lead before Zlatan Ljubijankič (85) headed Matjaž Kek's side back into contention. • Defoe (23) scored the only goal when the sides met in more significant circumstances – their final 2010 FIFA World Cup group stage game in Port Elizabeth. Victory took Capello's England to the knockout stage at the expense of Kek's Slovenia. • The teams for that match on 23 June 2010 were: Slovenia: Handanovič, Brečko, Šuler, Cesar, Jokić, Koren, Radosavljević, Birsa, Kirm (Matavž 79), Ljubijankič (Dedić 62), Novaković. England: James, Johnson, Upson, Terry, A Cole, Gerrard, Lampard, Barry, Milner, Defoe (Heskey 86), Rooney (J Cole 72). • In nine matches against Slovenia in UEFA age-group competitions, England's record is W7 D1 L1; the nations' Under-19 sides drew 1-1 in the most recent of those fixtures, at a UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifying mini-tournament in Slovenia. • The 11 meetings between English and Slovenian clubs in UEFA competition have been dominated by the teams: W7 D3 L1. That lone Slovenian success came when NK beat Wigan Athletic FC 2-1 at home in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League group stage. • The Purples also managed a draw against Chelsea FC in the most recent fixture between club sides from these countries, in this season's UEFA Champions League group stage on 5 November, although the Blues had recorded a convincing 6-0 home victory the previous matchday.

5 England - Slovenia Saturday 15 November 2014 - 18.00CET (17.00 local time) Match press kit Wembley Stadium, London Head coach Roy Hodgson Date of birth: 9 August 1947 Nationality: English Playing career: Crystal Palace FC, Tonbridge Angels FC, Gravesend and Northfleet FC, Maidstone United FC, Berea Park FC Coaching career: Halmstads BK, Bristol City FC, IK Oddevold, Örebro SK, Malmö FF, Neuchâtel Xamax FC, Switzerland, FC Internazionale Milano (twice), Blackburn Rovers FC, Grasshopper Club, FC København, Udinese Calcio, United Arab Emirates, Viking FK, Finland, Fulham FC, Liverpool FC, West Bromwich Albion FC, England • After he spent most of his playing days in the English non-league system, Hodgson's coaching career spanning eight countries began with Halmstad. He guided the Swedish club to their first-ever Allsvenskan titles in 1976 and 1979; then guided Malmö to top of the table for five years in a row, although the play-off system then used meant they were champions only twice in that time. • A period at Xamax followed before the first of four forays into international management. Hodgson's Switzerland qualified for the 1994 FIFA World Cup – their first in 28 years – and then EURO '96 but the coach departed for Inter before the latter tournament. • After taking the Nerazzurri to the 1997 UEFA Cup final, Hodgson had spells in England, Switzerland, Denmark, Italy, the UAE, Norway and Finland, as well as a short stint back at Inter as technical director. • He returned to England and relegation-threatened Fulham in 2007/08, helping them to safety in his first term, a club- best seventh in the Premier League in his second and then the 2010 UEFA Europa League final. The 2-1 extra-time defeat by Club Atlético de Madrid proved his last game with the Cottagers, before he accepted the reins at Liverpool. • He left Anfield after 31 matches in charge, the shortest reign in Liverpool history, yet within five weeks was at West Brom, whom he steered to a then Premier League high of 11th. He was appointed England manager on 1 May 2012 and took them to the quarter-finals of UEFA EURO 2012 and the 2014 World Cup, where they failed to get out of the group stage. Srečko Katanec Date of birth: 16 July 1963 Nationality: Slovenian Playing career: NK Olimpija Ljubljana, GNK Dinamo Zagreb, FK Partizan, VfB Stuttgart, UC Sampdoria Coaching career: Slovenia Under-21s, ND Gorica, Slovenia (twice), Olympiacos FC, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, United Arab Emirates • A centre-back or defensive midfielder, Katanec began his playing days at home-town club Olimpija before spells with Dinamo and Partizan. He reached the 1989 UEFA Cup final with Stuttgart and won the same competition the following season with Sampdoria, whom he also helped to the 1992 UEFA Champions League showpiece. • Earned 31 caps for Yugoslavia (five goals) – including at the 1984 UEFA European Championship, the 1984 Olympic Games and the 1990 FIFA World Cup – and five for Slovenia (one goal). • Started his coaching career with Slovenia's U21s in 1996, two years after retiring as a player. After a brief stint in the Gorica dugout, took charge of the senior Slovenia side in 1998 and guided them to UEFA EURO 2000 – their first major tournament – and the 2002 World Cup. • Joined Olympiacos in 2002 but stayed for only three months and in February 2006 assumed the FYROM helm, where he remained for three years. Named United Arab Emirates coach in June 2009, a position he held for two years. • Katanec was reappointed by Slovenia in January 2013 and is contracted until the end of UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying.

EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying).

From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 was the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.

Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
