Baker iv ABSTRACT COSTUME CULTURE: VISUAL RHETORIC, ICONOGRAPHY, AND TOKENISM IN COMIC BOOKS Michael G. Baker, PhD Texas A&M University-Commerce, 2017 Advisor: Christopher Gonzalez, PhD Superhero comic books provide a unique perspective on marginalized characters not only as objects of literary study, but also as opportunities for rhetorical analysis. There are representations of race, gender, sexuality, and identity in the costuming of superheroes that impact how the audience perceives the characters. Because of the association between iconography and identity, the superhero costume becomes linked with the superhero persona (for example the Superman “S” logo is a stand-in for the character). However, when iconography is affected by issues of tokenism, the rhetorical message associated with the symbol becomes more difficult to decode. Since comic books are sales-oriented and have a plethora of tie-in merchandise, the iconography in these symbols has commodified implications for those who choose to interact with them. When consumers costume themselves with the visual rhetoric associated with comic superheroes, the wearers engage in a rhetorical discussion where they perpetuate whatever message the audience places on that image.

Queen’s National Model United Nations Conference Kingston, Ontario February 28th-March 2nd 2019 QUEEN’S NATIONAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE Letter from the Director Hello delegates, My name is Brendan Nugara and I am the director for the Injustice League committee. This committee is inspired by the characters of DC comics, mainly the Assembly of Supervillains, commonly known as the Injustice League, but also as the Legion of Doom. I chose this committee due to my love for DC comics growing up and today, I’m definitely team DC over team Marvel. While this may be an unpopular opinion, I hope it doesn't sway your opinion of this committee. My goal for this committee is for you to enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it. If this is your first MUN experience, I hope this committee can inspire you to continue participating in MUN. If this isn’t your first rodeo, I hope for this to be a memorable experience that exceeds your expectations set by past conferences. All the best, Brendan Nugara 1 QUEEN’S NATIONAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE Table of Contents Background Guide • Preface – 3 • The Justice League – 5 • The Injustice League – 5 • A message from Lex Luthor – 6 • Characters – 6 • Resources – 14 2 QUEEN’S NATIONAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE Preface A breakdown of the Guide This guide consists of five parts. • American Animated Action Teams and the Token Female
THE MODELS OF EMPOWERED FEMININITY WE OFFER YOUNG BOYS: AMERICAN ANIMATED ACTION TEAMS AND THE TOKEN FEMALE Matthew Diebler A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTERS OF ARTS May 2007 Committee: Jeffrey Brown, Advisor Becca Cragin ii ABSTRACT Jeffrey Brown, Advisor The very nature of a hero is to stand as a cultural ideal. The heroes we produce for our children are meant to function as their idealized cultural models, teaching them the positive value of specific embodied traits. This extends to gender: the gendered ideological statements made by these heroic characters promote a gendered cultural ideal. Traditionally, academics interested in female gender representation and children’s television have focused on shows targeting young girls. However, it is just as important to examine the representation of the heroic women in television shows aimed at young boys. Young boys grow into adult men and, in our patriarchal society, male expectations of women play largely into their expectations of themselves. Therefore, the heroines of series marketed at young boys represent the ideal cultural models of empowered femininity, influencing the expectations and criteria these boys will have for “strong” women as they grow into politically powerful men. With all this in mind, it then becomes important to examine these models of ideal empowered femininity. By examining the token females in American animated action/adventure team-based television series marketed toward young boys over the past 30 years (starting with Super Friends in the late 70s, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, ThunderCats, and G.I.

Touponce, PhD. Master’s Thesis Committee ____________________________ Kristine Brunovska Karnick, PhD. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First of all, many thanks are due to the members of my thesis committee, Dr. Bingham, Dr. Touponce and Dr. Karnick. I greatly appreciate their invaluable help, which came via many hours of reading, critiquing and offering suggestions, as well as weeding through typos and muddled syntax. Not only has their input improved the quality of this project, but they have each helped form me into a better scholar. I am truly grateful for this, and I have enjoyed getting to know each of them along the way. Thanks also to the University and the Institute for American Thought for providing a fellowship and assistantship, respectively, without which it would have been much more difficult to pursue graduate studies. My lovely wife Sarah deserves the highest praise for her encouragement and support both in this project and in my studies in general. The decision to allow me to pursue fulfillment (not to mention vocational preparation) through deeper study was not an easy one, as it required both many hours apart for these pining newlyweds as well as monetary sacrifice. Her wit, intelligence and humor have sustained me through the last couple of years, and I am incredibly fortunate to be her husband.
