Queen’s National Model United Nations Conference Kingston, Ontario February 28th-March 2nd 2019 QUEEN’S NATIONAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE Letter from the Director Hello delegates, My name is Brendan Nugara and I am the director for the Injustice League committee. This committee is inspired by the characters of DC comics, mainly the Assembly of Supervillains, commonly known as the Injustice League, but also as the Legion of Doom. I chose this committee due to my love for DC comics growing up and today, I’m definitely team DC over team Marvel. While this may be an unpopular opinion, I hope it doesn't sway your opinion of this committee. My goal for this committee is for you to enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it. If this is your first MUN experience, I hope this committee can inspire you to continue participating in MUN. If this isn’t your first rodeo, I hope for this to be a memorable experience that exceeds your expectations set by past conferences. All the best, Brendan Nugara 1 QUEEN’S NATIONAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE Table of Contents Background Guide • Preface – 3 • The Justice League – 5 • The Injustice League – 5 • A message from Lex Luthor – 6 • Characters – 6 • Resources – 14 2 QUEEN’S NATIONAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE Preface A breakdown of the Guide This guide consists of five parts. The first is this Preface, meant to give you an idea of the committee and what is expected from you as a delegate in this committee. Next, there is a brief summary of both the Justice League and the Injustice League, meant to give context to each group in regards to this committee. This is followed by a Letter from Lex Luthor, a fictional character who will be embodied by the chair of the committee. This letter is written to address your character. We then have the character descriptions, which will be explained in more depth later in this section. Finally, the last section is comprised of links to help you start your research. The Committee The DC comics’ universe, or better put, universes as there are numerous alternate ones, can be quite complex and hard to grasp. For that reason, I would like to clarify that the universe in which this committee exists in is practically the same as ours, but with superpowers, magic and other miscellaneous supernatural beings. My expectation for committee members is not for you to master knowledge of all that is DC comics, but to understand the character you have been given. I have provided a starting point for understanding each character in the final section of this guide; these are intended to help you understand your character in basic terms before you begin any research. The character outlines I have given at the end of this guide are composites made up of multiple versions of the character. Because of this, I do not expect you to understand and research your character from only one version; you are free to mix characteristics from other versions, as long as reasonable within the context of the committee. By reasonable, I mean not taking something like an alternate reality of a character, which drastically changed their abilities. With that said, if you can find a way to alter your ability through a crisis, I will not overlook it. As with the characters, the reality this committee exists in is meant to be a mixture of the different DC worlds, from TV shows, to movies, to the comics. As long as something is reasonable and possible for your character, and in regard to the committee's state at the time, then I won’t dispute it. 3 QUEEN’S NATIONAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE Additionally, I’d like to make a note on the committee chair, who will act as a character in the Injustice League as well as Lex Luthor. This will be expanded upon in later sections. On a final note regarding research, there are links at the end of the guide you can look at to give you more info on characters. Aside from that, I encourage you to do some research on the characters and their overall place in the context of DC as a whole. This can include researching their nemesis, reading/watching media with storylines they were a part of, or looking at character summaries of your assigned character. With that said, if you have any questions or concerns feel free to email me at: [email protected] 4 QUEEN’S NATIONAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE Justice League Comprised of Earth’s mightiest heroes, the Justice League acts as protectors of Earth and peace around the galaxy. With two main bases, one in the city of Metropolis and the other orbiting space, and many smaller bases both in space and around the world, the Justice League keep a close eye on everything, especially supervillain activity. There was a time before the Justice League, where supervillains could be successful in spite of superheroes. While the same amount of superheroes existed, their lack of cooperation and organization among themselves made being a supervillain much easier. Instead, now you have a large organization of superheroes who know of and are watching for you, whereas before, a supervillain may have had a few if not only one superhero who knew of them and watched for them. Additionally, even if multiple superheroes were to go after the same people, it could often result in fighting amongst the heroes, due to misunderstandings or distrust. However, with the Justice League, that all changed. Info on all super villains has been gathered together, and more heroes are keeping an eye out for them in a more efficient manner. It's never been easier to stop crime, and it's never been harder to be a supervillain. Injustice League Formed and funded by billionaire Lex Luthor, the Injustice League was a pitch to supervillains as a way to adapt and thrive in a post-Justice League world. With the money, power, and influence of Lex Luthor, he enlisted the help of 12 well-known supervillains to help him run and expand the League. These 12 Supervillains are the members of this committee, and currently, the only members of the Injustice League as it is in its infancy. With the organization of the Justice League, the idea is to fight fire with fire. In making a league of their own, supervillains have the possibility to reap the benefits of organization and cooperation which would enable them to go toe to toe against the Justice League. However, there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done before the Injustice League is a match for the Justice League. 5 QUEEN’S NATIONAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE A Message from Lex Luthor As a clarification, the predetermined meeting of this council will go forth as planned. You, along with eleven more of Earth's deadliest villains will assemble with me to discuss the future of the Injustice League. As a core member of the organization, you have the power to vote on all major decisions concerning the Injustice League, however, as the founder, I retain the right to veto any motions as seen fit. With that said, as long as we all hold up our ends of the bargain, I don’t see that happening. To reinstate our agreement, in exchange for the resources and funding I have given you in the form of the Injustice League, I need you to help me. In order to gain my trust and the benefits that come with it, I need you to complete a series of tasks for me which will be disclosed at our meeting. These tasks are confidential and do not pertain to you in any way more than your doing your part in them. Once you have proven yourself to me, I will deliver upon my part of the agreement, and you will have everything you need to succeed in your criminal activities, in spite of the Justice League. In discussing the future of this organization at our meeting, there are three issues which I would like to focus on. 1. Keeping our existence a secret from the Justice League 2. How you will cooperate with other members in order to complete the tasks I give you 3. Avoiding a power struggle which inevitably would lead to chaos Looking at the first issue, this is crucial to the survival of the Injustice League. Our strength against the Justice League will be leaving them unprepared for our organized abilities. By keeping ourselves a secret, we have the ability to maintain the element of surprise, and this will prove beneficial. The second issue pertains to the functioning of this organization. With the twelve of you being supervillains, being trustworthy would definitely not be the first word to describe you. To have a group made up of supervillains we must maintain the notion of being codependent on one another. To be a match of the Justice League we need to be and act like a team, or else the formation of the Injustice League would be in vain. 6 QUEEN’S NATIONAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE Finally, the hunger for power can be strong, but also destructive. To maintain this organization, and not have it fall into chaos, we must respect each other's positions, mainly myself as the founder and leader of the Injustice League. This is no place for petty power struggles, as, through our cooperation, we will all be made the wealthiest and most powerful in the galaxy.
