Prather The increasing negative effects of human impacts on the Earth have led to the urgent need for large-scale ecological restoration. One ecosystem of particular interest for restoration is tallgrass prairie, which only has 4% of its original 167 million acre range remaining in North America. However, restored and constructed prairies often do not support the same biodiversity and ecosystem services as remnant prairies. Many restoration projects only focus on reinstating vegetation, assuming that other trophic levels will colonize on their own. These higher trophic levels include arthropods, which make up a majority of the biodiversity in prairie ecosystems. We sought to determine if there is a difference in the insect communities in constructed and remnant prairies. -

In many countries, they are well established for environmental impact assessment, but even in the well-studied Central European fauna, species identification can be very difficult. A comprehensive and taxonomically well-curated DNA barcode library could remedy this deficit and could also link hundreds of years of traditional knowledge with next generation sequencing technology. However, such a beetle library is missing to date. This study provides the globally largest DNA barcode reference library for Coleoptera for 15 948 individuals belonging to 3514 well-identified species (53% of the German fauna) with representatives from 97 of 103 families (94%). This study is the first comprehensive regional test of the efficiency of DNA barcoding for beetles with a focus on Germany. Sequences ≥500 bp were recovered from 63% of the specimens analysed (15 948 of 25 294) with short sequences from another 997 specimens. -

Phylogenetic Systematics of the Cerylonid Series of Cucujoidea
PHYLOGENETIC SYSTEMATICS OF THE CERYLONID SERIES OF CUCUJOIDEA (COLEOPTERA) by JAMES A. ROBERTSON (Under the Direction of Joseph V. McHugh) ABSTRACT We conduct a large-scale phylogenetic investigation of the Cerylonid Series (C.S.) of Cucujoidea, a diverse group of cucujoid beetles comprising 9,600 species classified in eight families, using morphological data (76 taxa ! 147 adult and larval characters), molecular data (341 taxa ! 9 genes: 18S, 28S, H3, 12S, 16S, COI, COII, CAD and ArgK) and a combination of the two datasets. In total, our analyses suggest the following: the C.S. is a monophyletic group based on both morphological and molecular evidence; the superfamily Cucujoidea is paraphyletic with respect to the remaining superfamilies in the series Cucujiformia; the C.S. represents a unique clade within Cucujiformia and should be recognized as its own supferfamily, Coccinelloidea, within the series; Byturidae and Biphyllidae should be transferred to Cleroidea; the C.S. families Corylophidae, Coccinellidae, Latridiidae, and Discolomatidae, are monophyletic; Cerylonidae, Endomychidae, and Bothrideridae are paraphyletic. Bothrideridae is split into two distinct families comprising the former Bothriderinae (as Bothrideridae) and the other including the remaining subfamilies (as Teredidae); the cerylonid subfamily Euxestinae is included within Teredidae; the new concept of Cerylonidae includes the following subfamilies: Ceryloninae, Ostomopsinae, Murmidiinae, Discolomatinae and Loeblioryloninae (inserte sedis); the status of the putative -

GROWN IN EASTERN COLORADO Industrial hemp was found to support a diverse complex of arthropods in the surveys of hemp fields in eastern Colorado. Seventy-three families of arthropods were collected from hemp grown in eight counties in Colorado in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Other important groups found in collections were of the order Diptera, Coleoptera, and Hemiptera. The arthropods present in fields had a range of association with the crop and included herbivores, natural enemies, pollen feeders, and incidental species. Hemp cultivars grown for seed and fiber had higher insect species richness compared to hemp grown for cannabidiol (CBD). This observational field survey of hemp serves as the first checklist of arthropods associated with the crop in eastern Colorado. Emerging key pests of the crop that are described include: corn earworm (Helicoverpa zea (Boddie)), hemp russet mite (Aculops cannibicola (Farkas)), cannabis aphid (Phorodon cannabis (Passerini)), and Eurasian hemp borer (Grapholita delineana (Walker)). Local outbreaks of several species of grasshoppers were observed and produced significant crop injury, particularly twostriped grasshopper (Melanoplus bivittatus (Say)). Approximately half (46%) of the arthropods collected in sweep net samples during the three year sampling period were categorized as predators, natural enemies of arthropods. -

Two species, Phalacrus politus Melsheimer and Olibrus vittatus LeConte, are newly recorded in Canada. As a result, eight phalacrids are now known to occur in Canada. Th irteen new provincial records are reported including one from Saskatchewan, two from Mani- toba, two from New Brunswick, three from Nova Scotia, two from Prince Edward Island, and three from Newfoundland and Labrador. Th e four species and ten provincial records of Phalacridae reported from provinces in Atlantic Canada are the fi rst records of this family in the region. -

The study was conducted in central Croatia with six different pre-sowing activities (cover crop, mulching, ploughing, glyphosate, fertiliser re- moval, conventional tillage). Pitfall traps were used to collect soil fauna in April, June and September. After determining the abundance and composition of the fauna, their coenological characteristics were calculated and statistical analysis was performed. During the study, 7836 individuals of soil fauna were collected. The composition consisted of 84% beneficial, 8% harmful and 8% indifferent fauna. Class Insecta was the most numerous with a proportion of 56%, with most members of the family Carabidae (1622 individuals), followed by the class Arachnida (40%). The number of fauna collected was influenced by the interaction between pre-seeding intervention and sampling date. Pre-seeding interventions that did not involve soil activities did not affect the number and composition of soil fauna at the beginning of vegetation. Mechanical interventions in the soil and warmer and drier weather have a negative effect on the number and composition of soil fauna.
