EXPLORING CURRICULUM LEADERSHIP CAPACITY-BUILDING THROUGH BIOGRAPHICAL NARRATIVE: A CURRERE CASE STUDY A dissertation submitted to the Kent State University College of Education, Health and Human Services in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Karl W. Martin August 2018 © Copyright, 2018 by Karl W. Martin All Rights Reserved ii MARTIN, KARL W., Ph.D., August 2018 Education, Health and Human Services EXPLORING CURRICULUM LEADERSHIP CAPACITY-BUILDING THROUGH BIOGRAPHICAL NARRATIVE: A CURRERE CASE STUDY (473 pp.) My dissertation joins a vibrant conversation with James G. Henderson and colleagues, curriculum workers involved with leadership envisioned and embodied in his Collegial Curriculum Leadership Process (CCLP). Their work, “embedded in dynamic, open-ended folding, is a recursive, multiphased process supporting educators with a particular vocational calling” (Henderson, 2017). The four key Deleuzian “folds” of the process explore “awakening” to become lead professionals for democratic ways of living, cultivating repertoires for a diversified, holistic pedagogy, engaging in critical self- examinations and critically appraising their professional artistry. In “reactivating” the lived experiences, scholarship, writing and vocational calling of a brilliant Greek and Latin scholar named Marya Barlowski, meanings will be constructed as engendered through biographical narrative and currere case study. Grounded in the curriculum leadership “map,” she represents an allegorical presence in the narrative. Allegory has always been connected to awakening, and awakening is a precursor for capacity-building. The research design (the precise way in which to study this ‘problem’) will be a combination of historical narrative and currere. This collecting and constructing of Her story speaks to how the vision of leadership isn’t completely new – threads of it are tied to the past.

BROWN UNIVERSITY U I N C E N T E I Q N A M R E Y S 1 4 7 6 4 – 2 0 1 TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY-SEVENTH COMMENCEMENT SUNDAY, MAY 24, 2015 In March 1764, the “General Assembly of the Governor and Company of the English Colony of Rhode Island” gathered to consider the charter that would establish Rhode Island College (renamed Brown University in 1804). Though founded during the reign of King George III, the college was dedicated to the “liberty of conscience,” a core principle that continues to define our institution to this day. Brown’s 250th Anniversary is being celebrated on College Hill and throughout the world through May 2015. The semiquincentenary provides an opportunity to acknowledge Brown’s academic excellence while exploring new ways of collaborating across disciplines; reflect on the challenges Brown has confronted over time; and imagine Brown’s future in an ever more complex global environment. Transcript – Peggy McKearney '75 Narrator: Peggy (PJ) McKearney Hamel Interviewer: Whitney Pape Interview Date: April 18, 2016 Interview Time: 11:00 a.m. Location: Pembroke Hall, Brown University, Providence, RI Length: 2 audio files; 55 minutes Track 1 WP: It is April 18, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. This is Whitney Pape, and I am in Alumnae Hall interviewing PJ Hamel, formerly Patricia McKearney… PJH: Nope—Peggy McKearney. WP: Peggy McKearney, excuse me. And you're a graduate of Brown in 1975, correct? PJH: Right. WP: Alright. Let's get started. How about, just as some background, talking about your family, childhood, the old, old history… PJH: Sure! I was totally middle class: Dad was a school teacher, Mom was a stay-at-home mom back when there was no such thing as stay-at-home moms because all moms stayed at home, pretty much. And she then became a secretary as we got older, then went back and got a Master's and became a school librarian, so I was immersed in history and scholarship and learning. One brother, one sister, I was in the middle. And grew up in mostly Connecticut, and then Massachusetts, and, as I said, strictly middle class but never felt like we were missing anything. We wore hand-me-down clothes, had hand-me-down bicycles and played outside all day long in the dirt and barefoot, and it…back then, it wasn't what it is now. Now, you'd say, "Oh, that sounds kind of, you know, less than middle class," but back then, it was just the way everybody lived.
