Beug: Chair, NAMA Toxicology Committee Assessing the degree of amatoxin mushroom poisoning in North America is very challenging. Understanding the potential for various treatment practices is even more daunting. Although I have been studying mushroom poisoning for 45 years now, my own views on potential best treatment practices are still evolving. While my training in enzyme kinetics helps me understand the literature about amatoxin poisoning treatments, my lack of medical training limits me. Fortunately, critical comments from six different medical doctors have been incorporated in this article. All six, each concerned about different aspects in early drafts, returned me to the peer reviewed scientific literature for additional reading. There remains no known specific antidote for amatoxin poisoning. There have not been any gold standard double-blind placebo controlled studies. There never can be. When dealing with a potentially deadly poisoning (where in many non-western countries the amatoxin fatality rate exceeds 50%) treating of half of all poisoning patients with a placebo would be unethical. Using amatoxins on large animals to test new treatments (theoretically a great alternative) has ethical constraints on the experimental design that would most likely obscure the answers researchers sought. We must thus make our best judgement based on analysis of past cases. Although that number is now large enough that we can make some good assumptions, differences of interpretation will continue. Nonetheless, we may be on the cusp of reaching some agreement. Towards that end, I have contacted several Poison Centers and NAMA will be working with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). -

We report here the results of an inventory of basidiomycetes, which was undertaken in the region of Nafpactia Mts., central Greece. The investigated area, with woods dominated by C. sativa, was examined for the first time in respect to its mycodiversity. One hundred and four species belonging in 54 genera were recorded. Fifteen species (Conocybe pseudocrispa, Entoloma nitens, Lactarius glaucescens, Lichenomphalia velutina, Parasola schroeteri, Pholiotina coprophila, Russula alutacea, R. azurea, R. pseudoaeruginea, R. pungens, R. vitellina, Sarcodon glaucopus, Tomentella badia, T. fibrosa and Tubulicrinis sororius) are reported for the first time from Greece. In addition, 33 species constitute new habitats/hosts/substrates records. Data are related to mycological researches carried out mainly in some holm-oak woods through last three years. The new taxa collected amount to 172: 15 of them belonging to Ascomycota and 157 to Basidiomycota. It should be highlighted that 12 taxa have been recorded for the first time in Italy and many species are considered rare or infrequent. Each taxa reported consists of the following items: Latin name, author, habitat, height, and the WGS-84 Global Position System (GPS) coordinates. This work, together with the original Ligurian checklist, represents a contribution to the national checklist. Key words—mycological flora, new reports Introduction Liguria represents a very interesting region from a mycological point of view: macrofungi, directly and not directly correlated to vegetation, are frequent, abundant and quite well distributed among the species. This topic is faced and discussed in Zotti & Orsino (2001). Observations prove an high level of fungal biodiversity (sometimes called “mycodiversity”) since Liguria, though covering only about 2% of the Italian territory, shows more than 36 % of all the species recorded in Italy. -

E. 107 Street, Vancouver, WA. 98685, USA. * Correspondence to: [email protected] Abstract—A new species, Amanita alpinicola, is proposed for specimens fruiting under high elevation pines in Montana, conspecific with specimens from Idaho previously described under the invalid name, “Amanita alpina A.H. Sm., nom. prov.” Montana specimens originated from five-needle whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) forests where they fruit in late spring to early summer soon after snow melt; sporocarps are found mostly half-buried in soil. The pileus is cream to pale yellow with innate patches of volval tissue, the annulus is sporadic, and the volva is present as a tidy cup situated below ragged tissue on the stipe. Analysis of the ITS region places the new species in A. sect Amanita and separates it from A. gemmata, A. pantherina, A. aprica, and the A. muscaria group; it is closest to the A. muscaria group. Smith informally described an Amanita species from the mountains of western Idaho [see Addendum on p. 676]. He gave it the provisional name Amanita “alpina”, and this name has been used by subsequent collectors of this fungus in Washington, Idaho, and Montana. -

Amanita ochroterrea and Amanita brunneiphylla (Basidiomycota), one species or two? Nuytsia 21(4): 177–184 (2011). Amanita ochroterrea Gentilli ex Bas and A. brunneiphylla O.K.Miller are robust, macroscopically similar mushrooms described from the south-west of Western Australia. According to the protologue of A. brunneiphylla, the main difference between them is the presence (in A. ochroterrea) or absence (in A. brunneiphylla) of clamp connections. However, in the current study abundant clamp connections have been observed in the holotype and paratypes of A. brunneiphylla. As other microscopic characters are indistinguishable, A. brunneiphylla is synonymised with A. ochroterrea, and an expanded description presented. Introduction Amanita species are large, conspicuous mushrooms with a worldwide distribution. They are readily recognized to the generic level in the field, but the majority are difficult to separate into species solely on their appearance. Microscopic characters are usually needed before collections can be confidently identified. The most commonly used microscopic characters are spore size and shape, their response to Melzer’s iodine, the presence of clamp connections in the basidiome especially at the base of basidia, the structure of the subhymenium and underlying lamella trama, the pileipellis, and the structure of the universal veil on the pileus. -

Amanita flavoconia var. sinapicolor is proposed to be a taxonomic synonym of A. flavoconia var. inquinata. An unusual species of Amanita subsection Vittadiniae is given the code Amanita sp. HONI and treated only in a key to regional species of Ama- nita section Lepidella. A gazetteer is provided for Costa Rican sites at which Amanita species have been collected.
