It is the responsibility of the angler to have the appropriate paper work and be familiar with the rules for claiming a record.

The following table sets out the minimum requirements for owners and operators of a motor-propelled recreational vessel.

• All vessels operating at night require navigational lights and torch • It is recommended that vessels less than 6 metres should not proceed beyond sheltered waters • Sheltered waters are all waters not exceeding 2 nautical miles to seaward of land on the North and East coasts unless specified in the MAST “Limits of Operational Areas” • All Other Waters are those beyond Sheltered Waters as well as waters on the South and West Coasts between South East Cape and Cape Grim. • For more information regarding boating safety, please refer to the MAST website www.mast.tas.gov.au/recreational/boating/

You must not drive a boat while under the influence.

You need a license to drive any registered recreational boat. They are available at any Service Tasmania Outlet or a MAST accredited agent.

• In the event of foul weather, to avoid taking unnecessary risks the tournament committee will decide whether the day be a competition day or not. • Boats should try to establish early morning radio contact with base weather committee before proceeding to sea. • It is the skipper or crew’s responsibility to check with the organising committee to find out if the event is cancelled. • The committee will accept no responsibility for decisions made by individual boat crews who must decide whether or not to put in sea. • No catch is eligible in the competition until the start of fishing time is confirmed by base each day. • No berley or fishing is to take place until the fishing start time as advertised. • In the event of foul weather after the boats have put to sea, the committee will confer and decide whether or not the competition will be called off for the remainder of the day. • All fish caught before this time will be eligible. • The decision regarding return to port remains with the competitors.

• All anglers can use any type of that is GFAA approved unless specified in certain competitions, events or tournament details. All fish need to be gilled and gutted prior to weighing (sharks gutted only) for Club Prizes. • As a general rule the minimum fish weight is a minimum for 4 kg, where all fish less than 4 kg must exceed line class. All fish weighed for Sanctioned Tournaments must exceed or equal line class being used. • If a fish caught in a Sanctioned Tournament and it does not exceed the line class it can still be weighed in for our club prizes - but the fish will not be eligible for that tournament. In this case the angler must ask the club hosting the event, where the angler may have to wait till end of weighing before they can weigh their fish or be asked to weigh at a different location but this is at the discretion of the club hosting the event.

• Juniors are only eligible for Junior prizes, however a Junior may be entered as an adult in some competitions and can therefore be eligible for prizes overall, refer to individual competitions for details. • Juniors and Small Fry must be paid up as an adult member to be able to enter competitions as an adult.

In the event that a vessel fails to report for two consecutive radio skeds; The contest committee through the radio base or relay vessel will instigate the following procedure: 1. Request all vessels especially those near the last known grid position to commence a search of the area. In the event of inclement weather, only vessels capable of handling the conditions safely would be expected to undertake a search. This decision must be at the discretion of the skipper as the person with the sole responsibility for the safety of his vessel and crew. 2. Instruct all other competitors not involved in the search and not within reasonable range through the base station or relay vessel to cease competition fishing until the situation is resolved. 3. After 1 hour of searching without locating the vessel the contest committee, relay boat or base station operator will notify the Marine Police and the St. Helens Coast Guard of the situation and all action from that point on will be at the direction of the Marine Police or Coast Guard or in their absence the contest committee. 4. All boats engaged in the search for the missing vessel will be asked to continue looking until the situation is resolved. 5. Competition fishing will not recommence until the situation is resolved and the contest committee, through the radio base or relay boat, announce the restarting of fishing in the Tournament. If during any Club organized or other competition day an emergency call is initiated such as a “May Day” direct call or flare, all fishing will cease immediately at the direction of the committee and not recommence until announced by the committee. All available vessels should assist where possible in the event of any emergency.

The Gamefish Tagging Program (GTP) was established in the 1970’s primarily to give recreational fishers, and in particular gamefishers, the opportunity to assist in gathering research data. NSW Fisheries supplies fish tags to members of registered fishing clubs affiliated with the Game Fishing Association of Australia (GFAA). These members undertake the tagging of gamefish since the growing tendency for game and sportfishers to only weigh potentially record or tournament winning fish provides an excellent opportunity for tagging of large numbers of otherwise discarded gamefish on an economically viable basis. The program operates through 84 Gamefishing Clubs throughout Australia, with the main concentration being along the East Coast. Over 18,000 anglers have been involved in the program, each tagging at least one fish. The main species tagged include billfish (black, striped and blue marlin, sailfish, spearfish, ), tunas (yellowfin, bluefin, big-eye, albacore), sharks (whalers, tiger, mako, thresher, blue, hammerhead), kingfish, mackerel and other pelagic species. The GTP is very popular with gamefishers and sportfishers who regard the continuation of the program as essential to the long term existence of their sport. Since its inception, the program has expanded both geographically and in terms of numbers of fish tagged and recaptured. All the large saltwater gamefish tournaments held in Australia have a large tagging section within them. This “release them alive” ethic has spread throughout the gamefishing community and is largely due to this program. The GTP provides information on the movements and distribution of fish, encourages the release of juvenile fish, discourages the retention of large catches, encourages anglers to adhere to sustainability principles, develops an appreciation in anglers for the biology of gamefish and develops an appreciation of the bag and size limits. In this regard the GTP contributes to the sustainability of resources while educating the fishing community about fisheries laws. The program may also contribute to a sharing of the resource, and facilitate the perception of community ownership and responsibility for fishery resources.

Sourced November 2017: gfaa.asn.au GFAA maintains Australian records for both freshwater and saltwater gamefishes in line class, tippet class and all tackle categories. To qualify for official recording and granting of GFAA records, gamefish, rays and sharks must be caught by a financial or life member of a club affiliated with a state branch of GFAA. In order to qualify for a vacant GFAA record a gamefish fish must be at least equal in weight, & sharks & rays double to the line or tippet class in which the record is claimed. For a fish to replace an existing record it must outweigh the current record by an amount as shown in the section "WEIGHT REQUIRED TO DEFEAT OR TO TIE AN EXISTING RECORD" under Regulations Governing Record Catches. No application will be accepted for fish caught in hatchery waters, sanctuaries or banned fishing areas in national parks. The catch must not be at variance with any laws or regulations governing the species or the waters in which it was caught. GFAA will not accept any record application generated from within a non-sanctioned tournament other than an internal club competition. When an additional species of gamefish is made eligible for GFAA Records the effective date will be announced. caught on or after this date will be eligible for records. An announcement of additional species will be made in the Australian Game Fishing Records and Rules or by notification to State Association Secretaries.
