Blackburn certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: The Performance of Intersectionality on the 21st Century Stand-Up Comedy Stage Chair: Dr. Nicole Hodges Persley Date Approved: Aug. 23, 2018 iii Abstract In 2014, Black feminist scholar bell hooks called for humor to be utilized as political weaponry in the current, post-1990s wave of intersectional activism at the National Women’s Studies Association conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her call continues to challenge current stand-up comics to acknowledge intersectionality, particularly the perspectives of women of color, and to encourage comics to actively intervene in unsettling the notion that our U.S. culture is “post-gendered” or “post-racial.” This dissertation examines ways in which comics are heeding bell hooks’s call to action, focusing on the work of stand-up artists who forge a bridge between comedy and political activism by performing intersectional perspectives that expand their work beyond the entertainment value of the stage. Though performers of color and white female performers have always been working to subvert the normalcy of white male-dominated, comic space simply by taking the stage, this dissertation focuses on comics who continue to embody and challenge the current wave of intersectional activism by pushing the socially constructed boundaries of race, gender, sexuality, class, and able-bodiedness.

March 2, 2008 - Sunday Teams Announced; Name Them. And Such. Okay, we now have our final field of 18, which seemed like a good enough number. There will be three teams of six this time around, with the lowest-scoring team each week voting out a member. Oh, and please be cautioned that a surprising number of players haven't yet subscribed to the blog, and one (Robin Zimmer) hasn't even added the blog as a friend...and appears to have rejected us when we offered the hand of friendship in her direction. She filled out the 15-question thing, but apparently doesn't know we have our own site...? Maybe...? Anyway, teammates of hers: it's your problem now, homies. Like last year when the four teams were asked to make titles for themselves based on the four directions, this year the three teams will incorporate the primary colors in their team names. Talk amongst yourselves to decide a team name, and when any member of your team sends us a message with a team name, that'll be it. Cool? Alright then. For your convenience, I have the teams now split on our top friends list: the red team, followed by me, then the yellow team, followed by Ryan, then the blues. Note that only five reds are present, since that's Robin's team. Okay, so that should be all the minutiae I have to deal with. Let's show you freaks your teams, as decided by my trusty dice rolls: RED TEAM Kim Brake Cory Funk Jason Harber Josh Mitchell Marisa (I'm going to need a last name for you, if that's alright) Robin Zimmer YELLOW TEAM Patrick Kozicky Carrie Metz Blair Ross Zach Samuel Perry Thrun Brienne Zimmer BLUE TEAM Leif Bierly Sarah Bizek Rachel Dwyer Samantha Fronek Oliver Thrun John Youker Look good? If not, blame the dice, beeotch.

  • World-Travelling, Double Consciousness and Laughter | Chris A
World-Travelling, Double Consciousness and Laughter | Chris A. Kramer 93 World-Traveling, Double Consciousness, and Laughter Chris A. Kramer* Abstract In this paper I borrow from Maria Lugones’ work on playful “world-traveling” and W.E.B. Du Bois’ notion of “double consciousness” to make the case that humor can facilitate an openness and cooperative attitude among an otherwise closed, even adversarial audience. I focus on what I call “subversive” humor, that which is employed by or on behalf of those who have been continually marginalized. When effectively used, such humor can foster the inclination and even desire to listen to others and, if only for brief moments, adopt their point of view. To be able to see oneself as others see you can also be a desirable capacity, because along with such multidimensional seeing comes an epistemic advantage lacking in those who have no need nor desire to see as others do, especially if the vision of the others happens to be from below where one perceives that the promises of our explicit ideals are constantly being implicitly broken. Such humor is aesthetic, pleasurable in and of itself, and not amenable to scientific dissection. But it is also a skill that can be honed into a powerful tool of persuasion in circumstances where straightforward arguments are less effective. It can raise consciousness about the lived experiences of those suffering under systemic oppression and foster world travelling. Subversive humor encourages audiences, especially those who contribute to what Jean Harvey calls “civilized oppression”, to playfully travel across worlds and “tarry along” with the perspectives of the marginalized.1 Keywords: Oppression, Racism, Humor, Privilege, World Traveling, Double Consciousness 1 This paper is a result of research from my dissertation Subversive Humor, at Marquette University, 2015.

Brice 1 ShaiLeeyah Brice Professor Virginia Totaro Focused Inquiry 4 December 2015 Every saturday night at 11:30pm millions of diverse viewers tune in to watch Saturday Night Live expecting to experience comedic relief. Viewers expect to see skits with situations and people they can connect too. Over time within Saturday Night Live’s history there has been a struggle in presenting a diverse cast of black women. Men writers of Saturday Night Live have limited women's roles within the show. The producer of Saturday night live is reflecting a stereotypical viewpoint of women in the messages they convey. Out of the 137 casts members on Saturday Night Live only 5 of them have been African American women. This show continues to evolve by adding female cast members and writers. Over time the women on SNL have equipped more diverse roles but their actual presence in sketches are still limited. Saturday Night Live is a prime example that we can change our media system if we become literate and voice our opinions. “Media messages reflect the values and viewpoints of media makers.” (Introduction of Media Literacy) The women’s perspective was often hard to be presented within the show because men dominated the proposals and approvals of what was going to be on the show. A former female writer and producer of Saturday Night Live, Anne Beatts once stated “I think men feel threatened by women being funny. Men don’t like the idea of women making jokes because they think the ultimate women’s joke is, ‘How big is it?’ So they tend to cross their legs in the presence of funny women” (Hill, Weingrad).
