    WILLIAM FURMVAL, H. E. FALK AND THE SALT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, 1815-1889: "OME CHAPTERS IN THE ECONOMIC HISTORY OF CHESHIRE BY W. H. CHALONER, M.A., PH.D. Read 17 November 1960 N the second volume of his Economic History of Modern I Britain (p. 145), Sir John Clapham, writing of the chambers of commerce and trade associations which multiplied rapidly after 1860, suggested that between 1850 and 1875 "there was rather less co-operation among 'capitalist' producers than there had been in the more difficult first and second quarters" of the nineteenth century. He mentioned that in the British salt industry there had been price-fixing associations "based on a local monopoly" in the early nineteenth century, and added that after 1825 the industry "witnessed alternations of gentle­ men's agreements and 'fighting trade' " until the formation of the Salt Union in 1888. This combine has been called "the first British trust", but to the salt proprietors of the time it was merely "a new device, made easier by limited liability, for handling an old problem". Chairman’s Words by Councillor Pete O’Halloran, Chairman of Wincham Parish Council Gosh February 2014 already, it seems like only yesterday we were celebrating Christmas. By the looks of things we’re going to have a busy year this year with some interesting opportunities, challenges and plans coming through. Firstly I have to say a big thank you to one of our Ward Councillors Don Hammond who has secured us substantial funding for the planned toddler area on the Linnards Lane Playing Fields. This and the large grant from the QEII fund along with a contribution from Thor Chemicals which Naomi our Parish Clerk obtained means that work can commence. Running in parallel to this we are also looking at obtaining funding for a permanent War Memorial for the village to coincide with the commemorative events of the Great War. Speeding through the village is an issue raised by a lot of people, and some of you may have noticed villagers out and about with interactive speed equipment. The purpose for this was to collect evidence to obtain a permanent interactive sign. We would be required to part fund this but I feel this could be worthwhile as our observations show that when people see the sign they slow down. Also starting this year will be “Village Strolls”, where Wincham Parish Councillors walk through sections of Wincham with CWaC representatives. This will give us an opportunity to highlight issues directly with the relevant CWaC officials.

Wendy Sienfield from Manchester Airport will attend the May meeting as she is unwell at present. 14.21 Casual Vacancy – Following the resignation of Cllr Dutton there is a vacancy on the parish Council. The relevant notices have been posted and as there has been no call for a vote the parish council are free to co-opt a member to its numbers. Christine Newton introduced herself to the meeting and outlined her interests and also her willingness to serve as a parish councillor. Cllr Halman proposed that Christine Newton be co-opted , Cllr Nuttall seconded the motion and the meeting unanimously agreed. As no other names were put forward Christine Newton was duly co-opted and signed to accepted and signed to accept the position.

Such incidents pose a threat not only u n to homes and people, but also to businesses, with a i t consequent threat to economic growth and prosperity. n o C s s e n i s u B • e c I d n a w o n S At the same time such events also present opportunities for / local companies to develop products and systems to combat d o the effects of climate change as well as installing measures that o l reduce carbon dioxide (CO ) emissions and reduce energy bills. F 2 • Recognising these threats and opportunities, the Cheshire & e Warrington Local Economic Partnership (LEP) commissioned a g study to assess the risks and opportunities at the strategic growth a t r sites and sectors in the region.
