  • Grant Wins Easy Unanimous Decision by Bill Beacon
Learning today. Leading tomorrow. Notable Vanier Alumni Grant Wins Easy Unanimous Decision By Bill Beacon November 23, 2003 MONTREAL (CP) – Going back into the boxing ring after a five-year absence turned out to be just another day on the job for former champion Otis Grant of Montreal. Grant came out firing speedy combinations to score an lopsided unanimous decision over South African Dingaan Thobela on Saturday afternoon at the Bell Centre. “People were nervous for me but I wasn’t nervous at all,” said Grant (32-2-1), who hopes to work his way back to a world title fight within two years. “As we were going out to the ring I told (promoter) Yvon Michel ‘I don’t feel anything. That’s not normal.’ “But I went out and did the job.” Grant, 35, had the crowd of 3,660 chanting his nickname Magic as he won all eight rounds against Thobela (40-11-2), an aging, three-time world champion who lost his fourth match in a row. Judge Richard de Carufel scored it 80-70, Jean Lapointe had it 80-71 and Sylvain Leblanc had it 80-71. The Canadian Press also scored the bout 80-71. Thobela, 37, was not as impressed with Grant as the judges, saying the quick but light-hitting Grant didn’t hurt him and never had him in trouble. “He threw a lot of punches, but they weren’t doing anything to me,” said Thobela, known as the Rose of Soweto. “If I was in 100 per cent condition, I would have stopped him.

  • Q & a with Lucian Bute
Q & A with Lucian Bute As innovative and interesting as Showtime’s Super 6 is there is one glaring omission that keeps the winner from being crowned the King of Super Middleweight division. When it was originally announced a year a go many believed Lucian Bute should of been amongst the entrants, his two fights since that have added further fuel to that fire. Bute 30, boasts a perfect 26-0(21) cementing the belief that he should of been included. The reason for his omission is differs depending on whether you believe Team Bute or Showtime. The move hasn’t been as detrimental to Bute’s career as it first appeared with HBO picking up Bute’s last two fights, which were coincidentally the most impressive of his career to date. First came the rematch with teak tough Librado Andrade who a year before had given Bute the toughest fight of his career. This time Bute triumphed when he dropped Andrade in the fourth before later in the round delivering a debilitating bodyshot that nearly broke Andrade in two. Then most recently back in April Bute was matched with swing from the fence’s Colombian KO machine Edison Miranda. Once again Bute found the perfect punch when he landed a devastating uppercut that starched Miranda in the third. This October Bute returns to action and makes the sixth defence of his IBF Super Middleweight crown against his mandatory former Contender alumini Jesse Brinkley again in front of his hometown fans who flock to the Bell Center in Montreal in there thousands.

  • Wisp of a Man Still Has Punch Saturday, March 5, 2011 by HERB ZURKOWSKY, the GAZETTE
AN INTERESTING ARTICLE SENT TO YOU BY PERVIN FAMILY BUSINESS ADVISORS INC. The Montreal Gazette Wisp of a man still has punch Saturday, March 5, 2011 BY HERB ZURKOWSKY, THE GAZETTE Dear all: This is an article about my 91year old father, Abe Pervin that appeared in the Montreal Gazette, the major Montreal newspaper. I thought you might like to see it. Best regards, Elaine Elaine Andersen [mailto:[email protected]] Abe Pervin, 91, still trains young boxers four days a week at Centre Claude Robillard in Montreal. "He's like family and means everything to me," featherweight Lucia Larcinese says of Pervin, who has been in the corner for her two professional fights. Photographed by: JOHN KENNEY, THE GAZETTE, The Gazette He's there at Centre Claude Robillard most afternoons during the week, training amateur boxers, this wisp of a man. At 5-foot-5 and 165 pounds, he doesn't seem strong enough to don the pads, step into the ring and allow others, including a heavyweight, to punch the palms of his hands. In his running shoes, red monogrammed shirt and red pants, there would be little differentiating him from the other coaches, apart from his streak of gray hair. And this: Abe Pervin is 91 years old. He's been involved in the fight game since 1935. He has seen some of the sport's legendary figures, and worked the corners of the best professionals the province of Quebec has produced, including Donato Paduano, Fernand Marcotte, the Hilton family, Eric Lucas, Stephane Ouellet, Leonard Dorin, Adrian Diaconu and Lucian Bute.
