As we rush toward the 21st century, technological breakthroughs have rendered ink and paper inadequate to do that job. Ergo, starting with the 1997 season, you'll be able to get the best in results from our Web site . And you won't even have to pay for it.

That site is still under development, as we use the down time between track seasons to carefully craft the best in e-results. We guarantee you'll be impressed.

Call us hidebound traditionalists, but we still believe that the hard-copy version of TN absolutely must remain in existence too. Not only are there those of you out there who don't have Web access, but there also remains the inescapable fact that there are things you can do with presentation and readability on paper that you can't do on-screen . At least not with current mainstream technology.

But before you rush to renew your subscription, we've got to be honest and tell you that paper-version subscribers won't be getting as much material as they got in the past, and they may not get it quite as fast. But they'll be paying less, so TN will remain a bargain for those who need news .

For a basic idea of what you're going to get on paper, harken back to the 1993 volume of TN . You'll only get 25 issues instead of 40, but publication will remain weekly during the peak of the U.S. season. In other words, we're lopping off those tiny issues at the beginning and end of each year. You'll also be losing the page of news snippets that o-pens current issues, as that material will be appearing in th~ e!2ctronic ver sion . You'll also lose the lists, since those also will be available on an ongoing basis over the wires .

For anybody who really needs precise information, the paper version of TN will remain a necessity. It'll have deeper results than we can put on the Web, and it'll have those little nuances-like wind readings and series-that so often are missing in first versions of agate, and we have to spend days tracking down.

If you're the kind of person who needs a paper archive of track & field results , TN will remain invaluable. Allow us to suggest you continue to subscribe.
