Three monks observe special jubilees in 2015: Abbot Vincent Bataille OSB – 50 years of ordination to the priesthood, Fr. Burrows OSB ’70 – 40 years of profession of monastic vows, and Fr. Frederick Peterson OSB – 25 years of profession of monastic vows. A Jubilee Mass was celebrated by our monastic community on June 11, with Abbot Vincent as celebrant, Fr. Michael as homilist and Fr. Frederick as a special concelebrant.

Abbot Vincent was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Loras Lane of the Diocese of Rockford on June 19, 1965. He was an instructor at the Academy (having taught French and mathematics for 20 years Abbot Vincent Bataille OSB celebrating his at both the Lake St. and Butterfield campuses), dorm prefect, Choral 25th anniversary of ordination at the Director, bus driver, Director of Admissions and Dean of Students. original Marmion Abbey Chapel (1990). He was the Abbey sacristan, liturgical vestment tailor and choir director. He holds Master Degrees in music from the University of Notre Dame and in education administration from DePaul University. On December 14, 1991 he was elected the fourth abbot of Marmion Abbey, an office he held until his resignation on June 24, 2010. On August 8, 2011, he was elected President of the Swiss- American Benedictine Congregation, an office he still holds. For the last five years he has also been a spiritual director and confessor at Mundelein Seminary of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Fr. Michael in his Jubilee Mass homily said that, “Abbot Vincent was our builder abbot (abbey church, abbey infirmary, monastery renovation, playing fields, Regole Natatorium, Regole Science Center and Regole Field House)—the Pharaoh on the Fox—who loved nothing more than the sound of bulldozers and power saws. He was more at home with a hard hat than a miter. But more than a builder abbot, he was our spiritual father.” Fr. Michael Burrows OSB ‘70 blessing his parents duirng his ordination at Annuciation Church Fr. Michael graduated from Marmion Military Academy as a in Aurora (1980). resident student in 1970. He is the nephew of the late Fr. Battaglia OSB. Fr. Michael professed his monastic vows on August 6, 1975, and was ordained a priest on April 7, 1980. He continues as a sophomore theology instructor (over 30 years), as the student chaplain of the Academy, and the Benedictine representative on the Head of School staff. He has participated in every student KAIROS retreat (55 to date). He is sought by alumni to officiate at their weddings and baptize their children. In his homily, Fr. Michael spoke of the mystery of a monastic vocation—and more personally, “why me Lord?”

Fr. Frederick professed his monastic vows on August 6, 1990, and was ordained a priest on May 13, 1995. He taught freshman Western Civilization courses at the Academy in his first years after ordination. His main ministry that he has exercised for almost 20 years is pastor of St. George Romanian Byzantine in Aurora. He took a struggling parish and brought it back to life Fr. Frederick Peterson OSB professing again through good liturgy, solid preaching and devotion to his monastic vows to Abbot Cyr OSB ‘44 people. at the original Marmion Abbey Chapel (1990).

Fr. Michael said that, “Fr. Fred’s work at St. George’s is a testimony to God’s grace in action.” Even during Fr. Fred’s health challenges of the last six years, “you never gave up on your parish, and always kept your people first in your thoughts.” Abbey - 3 50 Years of Benedictine Presence By: Abbot John Brahill OSB ’67 Marmion Abbey’s Guatemala Mission celebrated its 50th life because of the opportunity to study given them by the anniversary with a special concelebrated Mass at the mission Benedictine monks. The 53rd Annual Salute to Youth, Marmion’s major fundraising benefit, broke attendance records with more than 830 friends and family present to celebrate Marmion. Chaircouple David and Annamarie York, parents of two Marmion graduates: Michael ’10 and John ‘11, were instrumental in the success of this year’s event. David and Annamarie, a Marmion Trustee, expressed their sincere gratitude to not only those in attendance but also to all who generously sponsored the event helping to achieve a profit of $200,000 for the educational programs of the Academy.

St. Scholastica was the sister of St. Benedict, and was a woman of prayer and service. She is considered the founder of the Benedictine Sisters. The St. Scholastica Award honors adult women who have led exemplary Catholic lives in service to God and humanity, and have had a long association with the monks of Marmion Abbey and their apostolates.

Student speaker, Sharbel Romanos ’15, spoke to the evening’s theme; “It is clear that something unique drives the Marmion advantage, something that is not present at any other academy, no matter their academic excellence: our beloved men in black. I would surely need more than an evening’s time to speak of our Marmion monks and about the transforming effect they have on our lives. Marmion monks, who have offered up their lives for Christ, follow His example. Through their loving service, constant and perseverant dedication to our education, and through fatherly love, they transform us day after hard working day. Now we are ready, prepared to follow by their example, caring for others and serving others, changing lives and hopefully transforming the world.”

Salute finished with Student Master of Ceremonies, Joseph Dutton ‘15, introducing the 118 senior couples. This traditional program was a wonderful way to highlight the young men of the Class of 2015 and celebrate the futures that lie ahead of them as graduates of the Academy. Additional photos from this year’s event can be viewed on Marmion’s online gallery: marmionacademy.smugmug.com.

Nazareth Farm 2015 by Mark Malkowski ’08, Director of Campus Ministry

In early June, a group of eight Marmion students and two faculty members traveled to the backcountry of West Virgina for a weeklong service-retreat experience at Nazareth Farm, where we were joined by close to forty other volunteers from four other schools and parishes from across the country. Nazareth Farm gives participants an incredible opportunity to grow in faith and to experience the rich culture and history of Appalachia through authentically living out the cornerstones of prayer, community, simplicity, and service. Our time at the Farm was spent performing home repair in the surrounding towns, interacting with community members, developing long-lasting relationships with our fellow volunteers, growing together as a Catholic-Christian community, and learning to recognize the presence of God in all things. It was an experience that gave all involved wonderful memories and a renewed understanding of what it means to put our faith into action.

YES Camp by: Christian Anderson ’04, Director of Campaigns/Grants The 1st annual Youth Energy Savers (YES) Camp was an overwhelming success and a ton of fun. Over 100 Aurora area middle school students packed the science classrooms at Marmion for the free 3-day camp that stressed the importance of alternate energy technologies and responsible energy usage. The YES camp was made possible through the generous support of the Dunham Fund and hard work and dedication of Marmion faculty and staff.

At the camp students rotated between 16 different activities, all of which focused on STEM education and clean energy. Some of the favorite experiments included: Generating hydrogen, measuring wind power using micro sensors and mini wind turbines, and creating objects with 3-D printers. Students also learned about ways to save energy at home with the help of Elevate Energy, a non-profit dedicated to reducing energy waste. YES Camp photos can be found at: marmionacademy.smugmug.com

MARMATHON is a student-led fundraiser to

2015 help offset the 20% gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating each student. It is also a way for the entire school to have some fun and potentially win an entire day off of school, along with some other great prizes. MARMATHON 2014-2015 culminated on February 20 with a school wide celebration that included an all-school dodgeball tournament and pep rally. The MARMATHON goal is for each student to raise $200.
