Abdul Kalam Former president of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam conceived in 1996, the ‘Vision 2020’ to ensure inclusive growth and improving quality of life in the country. Now struggling behind this India has embarked on a similar exercise for 2035, betting on emerging technologies to overcome major challenges. Tech Vision 2035 is a 100-page document, released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 103rd Indian Science Congress in Mysuru. The document attempts to envision the country’s technology future, using as analogy of four gaits of a horse – galloping, cantering, trotting and walking India. The document articulates a vision for all Indians in 2035 and how technology will bring it to fruition, keeping in view basic needs of security, prosperity and identity of the population, projected to be 153 crore from 120 crore in 2012. The key challenges that have been identified in the document are development, empowerment, inclusiveness, sustainability, environment, education, health, urban infrastructure, resources, socio-economic policies, solutions, electronic communication and quality research. The vision 2020 was envisaged in the backdrop of liberal reforms since the early 1990s, when the country was emerging from economic bankruptcy. It, however, provided directions for national initiatives in science and technology to make India a developed country by 2020. Though the country galloped in some areas and cantered to keep pace in others, it trotted in a few but could not walk the talk in many areas in time for various reasons, internal and external. For instance, the country galloped in the services sector, led by IT, but not so in the manufacturing sector, where the country’s expertise remained at the basic or intermediate level of technology due to lack of adoption in design and execution. In the past two decades, India galloped in space, nuclear and missile technologies, life sciences and biotechnology, cantered in civil aviation, services and road transportation but trotted in food and agriculture, manufacturing and electronics. Technology is the bridge between human wants and needs on one side, and available resources on the other side. The biggest challenge would be pressure on resources as they were limited and non-renewable like fossil fuels. More than sixty percent population of India still lives in village settlements where more than half of people struggle to eke out an existence with a paltry income. This needs to be raised to at least to a decent level. Technology should be directed to answer the problem of resources rather than talking about so-called culture, which the people would take care by themselves, when they are empowered and offered minimum decent earnings for living.     COBBLING TOGETHER THE DREAM INDIAN ELEVEN Whenever the five selectors, often dubbed as the five wise men with the onerous responsibility of cobbling together the best players comprising India’s test cricket team, sit together to pick the team they feel the heat of the country’s collective gaze resting on them. Choosing India’s cricket team is one of the most difficult tasks as the final squad is subjected to intense scrutiny by anybody and everybody. Generally the point veers round to questions such as why batsman A was not picked or bowler B was dropped from the team. That also makes it a very pleasurable hobby for followers of the game who have their own views as to who should make the final 15 or 16 when the team is preparing to leave our shores on an away visit or gearing up to face an opposition on a tour of our country. Arm chair critics apart, sports writers find it an enjoyable professional duty when they sit down to select their own team as newspapers speculate on the composition of the squad pointing out why somebody should be in the team at the expense of another. The reports generally appear on the sports pages on the morning of the team selection. This has been a hobby with this writer for over four decades now and once the team is announced, you are either vindicated or amused. And when the player, who was not in your frame goes on to play a stellar role for the country, you inwardly congratulate the selectors for their foresight and knowledge.
