  • Dallas (1978 TV Series)
Dallas (1978 TV series) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This article is about the original 1978–1991 television series. For the sequel, see Dallas (2012 TV series). Dallas is a long-running American prime time television soap opera that aired from April 2, 1978, to May 3, 1991, on CBS. The series revolves around a wealthy and feuding Texan family, the Ewings, who own the independent oil company Ewing Oil and the cattle-ranching land of Southfork. The series originally focused on the marriage of Bobby Ewing and Pamela Barnes, whose families were sworn enemies with each other. As the series progressed, oil tycoon J.R. Ewing grew to be the show's main character, whose schemes and dirty business became the show's trademark.[1] When the show ended in May 1991, J.R. was the only character to have appeared in every episode. The show was famous for its cliffhangers, including the Who shot J.R.? mystery. The 1980 episode Who Done It remains the second highest rated prime-time telecast ever.[2] The show also featured a "Dream Season", in which the entirety of the ninth season was revealed to have been a dream of Pam Ewing's. After 14 seasons, the series finale "Conundrum" aired in 1991. The show had a relatively ensemble cast. Larry Hagman stars as greedy, scheming oil tycoon J.R. Ewing, stage/screen actressBarbara Bel Geddes as family matriarch Miss Ellie and movie Western actor Jim Davis as Ewing patriarch Jock, his last role before his death in 1981. The series won four Emmy Awards, including a 1980 Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series win for Bel Geddes.

Mud City Press OSWALD'S TALE (Ostensibly a Book Review) by Dan Armstrong “If we obtain nothing else, we can count on gaining a greater understanding of the dominant state of our political existence in these decades of Cold War, for Oswald, willy-nilly, became one of the leading actors in this tragicomedy of superpowers who, with limited comprehension, lived in dread of each other.” -Norman Mailer from Oswald's Tale: An American Mystery Why in the damned world would anyone want to jump back into the morass of lies and suspicions surrounding the assassination of John F. Kennedy? Does it really matter any more who pulled the trigger or triggers in this most awful of American tragedies? Thirty-two years (at time of Oswald’s Tale’s publishing in 1995) and many millions of hours of research have intervened since that black day in Dallas and still no presiding scenario has been resolved. Shouldn't we just let this ugly little sore in American history heal up and scar? Shouldn’t we just move on? Why must we keep picking at this scab, causing it to bleed again and again? Why should Norman Mailer, arguably the most important American journalist of the last fifty years, invest his reputation and that of Random House Incorporated to worry again upon this old bone? “One stimulus to the writing of this book was an offer from the Belarus KGB to allow a look into their files on Oswald,” writes Mailer as he begins volume two of his 791 page non- fiction novel, Oswald's Tale: An American Mystery.

At DLS, we strive to challenge and prepare our students for the rigor of college, and to learn the value of maintaining a healthy balance between a career and life outside of work. We encourage the formation of healthy habits, especially spiritual and academic habits. College can put study habits, faith habits, and even nutritional habits to the test. I take great pride in the holistic college preparatory program at Dallas Lutheran School. As Freshmen and Sophomores, we begin to encourage students to work hard from the start to maintain their personal best possible Grade Point Average (GPA), and to stay focused on their coursework. Also, we promote participation and exploration of extracurricular activities in athletics, the fine arts and groups and clubs. In addition to my role in college guidance, I am privileged to teach the Junior Religion class. We are able to talk very specifically about the college admission process together.

  • October 2018
October 2018 Obligated in part by being the Mayor, I write all sorts of nice things about Dallas. But, it actually is a safe, largely sane and great place to live, an island in the storm of real-world untidiness. While we lack the Naked Bicycle Ride of Portland, Voodoo Donuts or the world’s largest fungus (in the Blue Mountains in case you want to visit it), we celebrate the delectable glories of small town life, Main Street America, in all sorts of ways. To illustrate, my wife dressed up in a slightly scary costume a few days ago to cruise downtown of Dallas as the City Coroner, Daisy Drinker, for the Murder Mystery (we generally have to fake mur- ders here). A whole bunch of people – hundreds – showed up to try to figure out who-done-it and some guessed correctly it was, not the butler, but Lorenzo Vino, with his degree in Fermentation and in love with the irritating Amber Hopps. Not exactly murder on the Orient Express, but engaging nonetheless. Even Jim the Rock, was briefly a suspect for, as you know, basalt has a dark side. Which reminds me, in ancient times when Main Street was two-way, it was great fun to pull practical jokes on one another like what we once did to Bud Foster, of Foster’s Sporting Goods. Bud had a cherished duck lake just out of town on which he lavished much attention all year with the intent of attracting ducks during hunting season. Being hunted was not particularly popular with ducks, so they made it a practice to avoid his lake on Wednesdays and Sundays, his hunting days at the lake.

MASCULINITY IN AMERICAN TELEVISION FROM CARTER TO CLINTON by Bridget Kies A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English at The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee May 2018 ABSTRACT MASCULINITY IN AMERICAN TELEVISION FROM CARTER TO CLINTON by Bridget Kies The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, 2018 Under the Supervision of Professor Tasha Oren This dissertation examines American television during a period I call the long 1980s. I argue that during this period, television became invested in new and provocative images of masculinity on screen and in networks’ attempts to court audiences of men. I have demarcated the beginning and ending of the long 1980s with the declaration of Jimmy Carter as Time magazine’s Man of the Year in 1977 and Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993.
