Grown as a shade tree in Surinam (Ostendorf, 1962). In tropical America this species is often interplanted with coffee and cacao trees to shade them; it is recommended for intensified utilization as a fuelwood for the humid tropics (National Academy of Sciences, 1980; Little, 1983). 9. Gebow, editors Technical Report No. 68 United States Geological Survey Sonoran Desert Field Station The University of Arizona Tucson, Arizona USGS Sonoran Desert Field Station The University of Arizona, Tucson The Sonoran Desert Field Station (SDFS) at The University of Arizona is a unit of the USGS Western Ecological Research Center (WERC). It was originally established as a National Park Service Cooperative Park Studies Unit (CPSU) in 1973 with a research staff and ties to The University of Arizona. Transferred to the USGS Biological Resources Division in 1996, the SDFS continues the CPSU mission of providing scientific data (1) to assist U.S. Department of Interior land management agencies within Arizona and (2) to foster cooperation among all parties overseeing sensitive natural and cultural resources in the region. It also is charged with making its data resources and researchers available to the interested public. Seventeen such field stations in California, Arizona, and Nevada carry out WERC’s work. The SDFS provides a multi-disciplinary approach to studies in natural and cultural sciences. Principal cooperators include the School of Renewable Natural Resources and the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at The University of Arizona. Unit scientists also hold faculty or research associate appointments at the university. The Technical Report series distributes information relevant to high priority regional resource management needs. The series presents detailed accounts of study design, methods, results, and applications possibly not accommodated in the formal scientific literature. Technical Reports follow SDFS guidelines and are subject to peer review and editing. -

Watson2 INTRODUCTION This large, multiple trunked, low-branching, evergreen shrub has silky leaflets which are glossy copper when new, turning to a dark metallic green (Fig. 1). The profuse, fragrant bloom is the main reason for its popularity, with big puffs, two to three inches across, of watermelon pink, deep red, or white silky stamens, produced during warm months. September, 2019 1 Background and Overview Millions of years ago, the Baja California peninsula broke off from the mainland of present-day Mexico creating the Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortez. Today, over 2,000 miles of rugged coastlines, lagoons, rocky reefs and palm oases designate the region where the Baja des- ert meets the sea. Along with its remarkable biological diversity, the Baja peninsula is marked with unique cultural characteristics. Prior to the founding of the first Spanish mission of California in Lo- reto, the region was inhabited by seminomadic tribes, the Pericu and Cochimi, who lived in the lush canyons of the Sierras de la Giganta and Guadalupe, living off the ocean and desert. Today, the region is at a crossroads. Thousands of hectares of coastal and desert habitats have been sold and developed over the past fifteen years, spurred by U.S. real estate prices and changes to Mex- ican law in the wake of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which encouraged foreign investment by making purchase of coastal land easier. Coupled with a growing population of retiring baby boomers entering the real estate market, former communal and private land is being transformed into resorts, private clubs, golf courses, marinas, and second homes. This unprecedented rate of development poses threats to the region’s key assets which make it attractive today: biodiversity, recreation and scenic beauty. -

Abstract: The genus Calliandra is represented in Texas by five species: C. bifiora Tharp, a relatively uncommon taxon of southern Texas and Tamaulipas, Mexico; C. conferta Benth., a somewhat uncommon, species of northern Mexico, south-central and southern Texas; C. eriophylla Benth., a widespread variable species of Mexico, represented in Texas by rare outlier populations in Uvalde County; C. humilis Benth. (including C. herbacea Engelm. ex A. Gray), a very distinctive herbaceous species of Mexico, occurring in Texas in mostly montane igneous soils of the trans-Pecos, and C. iselyi B. L. Turner, sp. nov., a newly proposed species from the Big Bend region of trans-Pecos, Texas, this previously included under the descriptive parameters of C. conferta.
