  • Targeted Sampling from Massive Block Model Graphs with Personalized Pagerank∗
Targeted sampling from massive block model graphs with personalized PageRank∗ Fan Chen1, Yini Zhang2, and Karl Rohe1 1Department of Statistics 2School of Journalism and Mass Communication University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI 53706, USA Abstract This paper provides statistical theory and intuition for Personalized PageRank (PPR), a popular technique that samples a small community from a massive network. We study a setting where the entire network is expensive to thoroughly obtain or maintain, but we can start from a seed node of interest and \crawl" the network to find other nodes through their connections. By crawling the graph in a designed way, the PPR vector can be approximated without querying the entire massive graph, making it an alternative to snowball sampling. Using the degree-corrected stochastic block model, we study whether the PPR vector can select nodes that belong to the same block as the seed node. We provide a simple and interpretable form for the PPR vector, highlighting its biases towards high degree nodes outside of the target block. We examine a simple adjustment based on node degrees and establish consistency results for PPR clustering that allows for directed graphs. These results are enabled by recent technical advances showing the element-wise convergence of eigenvectors. We illustrate the method with the massive Twitter friendship graph, which we crawl using the Twitter API. We find that (i) the adjusted and unadjusted PPR techniques are complementary approaches, where the adjustment makes the results particularly localized around the seed node and (ii) the bias adjustment greatly benefits from degree regularization. Keywords Community detection; Degree-corrected stochastic block model; Local clustering; Network sampling; Personalized PageRank arXiv:1910.12937v2 [cs.SI] 1 Jul 2020 1 Introduction Much of the literature on graph sampling has treated the entire graph, or all of the people in it, as the target population.

  • 2011 State of the News Media Report
Overview By Tom Rosenstiel and Amy Mitchell of the Project for Excellence in Journalism By several measures, the state of the American news media improved in 2010. After two dreadful years, most sectors of the industry saw revenue begin to recover. With some notable exceptions, cutbacks in newsrooms eased. And while still more talk than action, some experiments with new revenue models began to show signs of blossoming. Among the major sectors, only newspapers suffered continued revenue declines last year—an unmistakable sign that the structural economic problems facing newspapers are more severe than those of other media. When the final tallies are in, we estimate 1,000 to 1,500 more newsroom jobs will have been lost—meaning newspaper newsrooms are 30% smaller than in 2000. Beneath all this, however, a more fundamental challenge to journalism became clearer in the last year. The biggest issue ahead may not be lack of audience or even lack of new revenue experiments. It may be that in the digital realm the news industry is no longer in control of its own future. News organizations — old and new — still produce most of the content audiences consume. But each technological advance has added a new layer of complexity—and a new set of players—in connecting that content to consumers and advertisers. In the digital space, the organizations that produce the news increasingly rely on independent networks to sell their ads. They depend on aggregators (such as Google) and social networks (such as Facebook) to bring them a substantial portion of their audience. And now, as news consumption becomes more mobile, news companies must follow the rules of device makers (such as Apple) and software developers (Google again) to deliver their content.

There is growing evidence that eligible citizens are being denied the right to vote and that votes, when cast, may be lost or miscounted or even deleted. Until recently, most Americans have assumed that our elections are basically honest. But with each election, more and more people are reporting incidents of voter suppression and irregular tallies. At first, machine problems were dismissed as “glitches,” and difficulties faced by voters were simply the result of poor planning and poll worker error.

  • A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts And
A CONTENT ANALYSIS OF TELEVISION POLITICAL PUNDITS A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Communication, Culture, and Technology By Paul M. Hitlin, B.A. Washington, D.C. April 25, 2005 A CONTENT ANALYSIS OF TELEVISION POLITICAL PUNDITS Paul M. Hitlin, B.A. Thesis Advisor: Diana Owen, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Following the conclusion of the first 2004 presidential debate between George W. Bush and John Kerry, television political pundits immediately began to assess the performances of each candidate. Two particular elements of the debate were hardly mentioned, but became significant topics of discussion within a few days: Kerry’s use of the term “global test” and Bush’s physical appearance. Television pundits played a key role in framing these two elements as historical memories that became the centerpieces of subsequent conversations about the event. This paper examines the institution of the television pundit and the role they play in shaping political discourse. I propose that during the first hours of television coverage after the event, there would be a variation of discussions among pundits on different networks. Then over the next five days, the tone of discussions and topics would converge as pundits began to reflect the opinions expressed by those on other channels. To test these hypotheses, I first provided a definition of the term “pundit” and then discussed the history and influences that shape the modern occupation. Next, I conducted a content analysis of the statements made on 42 talk shows that appeared across six networks during the six days following the debate.
