Analysis of Talk Shows Between Obama and Trump Administrations by Jack Norcross — 69 An Analysis of the Political Affiliations and Professions of Sunday Talk Show Guests Between the Obama and Trump Administrations Jack Norcross Journalism Elon University Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements in an undergraduate senior capstone course in communications Abstract The Sunday morning talk shows have long been a platform for high-quality journalism and analysis of the week’s top political headlines. This research will compare guests between the first two years of Barack Obama’s presidency and the first two years of Donald Trump’s presidency. A quantitative content analysis of television transcripts was used to identify changes in both the political affiliations and profession of the guests who appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” CBS’s “Face the Nation,” ABC’s “This Week” and “Fox News Sunday” between the two administrations. Findings indicated that the dominant political viewpoint of guests differed by show during the Obama administration, while all shows hosted more Republicans than Democrats during the Trump administration. Furthermore, U.S. Senators and TV/Radio journalists were cumulatively the most frequent guests on the programs. I. Introduction Sunday morning political talk shows have been around since 1947, when NBC’s “Meet the Press” brought on politicians and newsmakers to be questioned by members of the press. The show’s format would evolve over the next 70 years, and give rise to fellow Sunday morning competitors including ABC’s “This Week,” CBS’s “Face the Nation” and “Fox News Sunday.” Since the mid-twentieth century, the overall media landscape significantly changed with the rise of cable news, social media and the consumption of online content.

July 15, 2020 Chris Cuomo ℅ CNN Press Room 30 Hudson Yards, Fl 21 New York, NY 10001 Thank you for sharing your health journey Dear Mr. Cuomo, I reluctantly admit I haven’t been watching much TV news lately. Sometimes, the news is just too much to bear. My sense of dread is compounded by my nearly 12 year struggle as caregiver for a loved one with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, also called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or ME/CFS. There are times when it’s really hard to keep going. The world feels exceptionally dark right now. And yet, last night you gave me hope. And, for that I am in your debt. During your Tuesday segment, you opened up about your personal experiences and challenging health journey since contracting COVID-19. You courageously shared your personal and firsthand concerns related to ME/CFS, intimately described the symptoms of the post-viral disease, and illustrated their very real impacts on daily life. As a result, you gave a voice to COVID-19 “long haulers” who live in fear of an uncertain future, terrified that they may never recover their health. You even used the appropriate name of the disease, ME—a rare acknowledgement by a national news outlet. By sharing your own journey, you lent a trusted, credible voice of reassurance and validation, for so many, that this experience is real. The segment may have been only a few minutes, but you spoke volumes to a community that faces daily hardships. In short, you told millions of people with ME/CFS, and those with lasting COVID-19 symptoms, that they aren’t alone or crazy.

(June 8, 2021) – Governor Phil Murphy currently has a clear path to reelection victory, according to the latest Rutgers-Eagleton Poll. When New Jersey registered voters are asked whether they would vote to reelect Murphy, consider voting for someone else, or definitely vote for someone else, 42 percent would definitely vote to reelect the governor. Twenty-one percent say they are on the fence, and 31 percent would definitely vote for someone else. Support for Murphy in a head-to-head match-up increases when pitted against former New Jersey Assemblyman and likely Republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli. Fifty-two percent of registered voters say they would vote for Murphy if the election were held today, compared to 26 percent for Ciattarelli. Murphy wins 83 percent of his Democratic base, while 67 percent of Republicans back Ciattarelli; independents are more unsure, with 19 percent not knowing who to vote for, another 39 percent siding with Murphy, and 29 percent backing Ciattarelli. “New Jersey has seen some uncompetitive gubernatorial races the past couple of cycles, and this race does not seem to be the exception right now,” said Ashley Koning, an assistant research professor and director of the Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling (ECPIP) at Rutgers University–New Brunswick.
