2007 Cricket World Cup Sport Tourists: The Caribbean Experience Douglas Michele Turco, Drexel University, USA, [email protected] Marlene Cox, University of Guyana, Guyana Shamir Andrew Ally, DeSales University, USA Keywords: Sport tourism, sport spectators, cricket, World Cup, Guyana Abstract Introduction The West Indies was awarded the right to host the International Cricket Council (ICC) 2007 Cricket World Cup (CWC), marking its first attempt at hosting an international sport championship. The CWC is one of the world's most viewed sporting events. As indicators of its global reach, 2007 CWC matches were televised in 200 countries to over 2.2 billion television viewers. Televised rights for the 2011 and 2015 CWC were recently sold for over $US 1.1 billion, and sponsorship rights were sold for a further US$500 million (cricinfo.com, 2007). A total of 51 one day matches were hosted by eight territories (Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia and Trinidad & Tobago) over the period 13 March to 28 April 2007. Super Eight matches, essentially eight-team round robin competition, were held between 27 March and 21 April in Antigua, Bridgetown in Barbados, Providence in Guyana, and Grenada. Attendance for the entire 2007 CWC averaged 11,176 per match (www.icc-cricket.com). Aims While several studies have profiled sport tourists at international events, relatively few have involved events in developing countries, particularly in the Caribbean. The purpose of this study is to examine the consumer behaviors of tourists to the 2007 Cricket World Cup and to compare them to previous CWC visitors.

  • Predicting ICC Cricket World Cup 2015
International Journal of Engineering Technology Science and Research IJETSR www.ijetsr.com ISSN 2394 – 3386 Volume 2 Issue 5 May 2015 Predicting ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Shubham Awasthi1 ,Sakshi Babbar2 Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Jaypee University of Information Technology, Waknaghat, Himachal Pradesh, India Abstract The Cricket World Cup is one of the worlds largest and popular international sports tournament, which takes place every four years. The 2015 Cricket World Cup is just a few weeks away, and spectators have already started predicting the winner of the prestigious Cup. However, such predictions are purely based on experiences, instincts and gut feelings. In this work, we propose an integration of expert experiences with real cricket, sport statistics to model 2015 Cricket World Cup using Bayesian network to forecast the winner of the esteemed Cup. The objective of this work is not to propose a new data mining predictive algorithm, but a real life application where we can apply predictive task to gain knowledge about the domain. Using a Bayesian model we forecast winning teams of Cricket World Cup group stage, quarterfinals, semi finals and finals. By observing the current state of the World Cup, we claim accuracy of our work to be 88.1$\%$ and based on the current standings of teams in the quarter-finals our approach predicts Australia and New Zealand to reach the finals of the 2015 Cricket World Cup, of which Australia has a high probability to win the title of next cricket champions. We provide detail analyses of factors which may contribute Australia to win, and factors on which Australia may choose to work further to strengthen their chance of winning.

Cricket as a Diasporic Resource for Caribbean-Canadians by Janelle Beatrice Joseph A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Exercise Sciences University of Toronto © Janelle Beatrice Joseph 2010 Cricket as a Diasporic Resource for Caribbean-Canadians Janelle Beatrice Joseph Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Exercise Sciences University of Toronto 2010 Abstract The diasporic resources and transnational flows of the Black diaspora have increasingly been of concern to scholars. However, the making of the Black diaspora in Canada has often been overlooked, and the use of sport to connect migrants to the homeland has been virtually ignored. This study uses African, Black and Caribbean diaspora lenses to examine the ways that first generation Caribbean-Canadians use cricket to maintain their association with people, places, spaces, and memories of home. In this multi-sited ethnography I examine a group I call the Mavericks Cricket and Social Club (MCSC), an assembly of first generation migrants from the Anglo-Caribbean. My objective to “follow the people” took me to parties, fundraising dances, banquets, and cricket games throughout the Greater Toronto Area on weekends from early May to late September in 2008 and 2009. I also traveled with approximately 30 MCSC members to observe and participate in tours and tournaments in Barbados, England, and St. Lucia and conducted 29 in- depth, semi-structured interviews with male players and male and female supporters. I found that the Caribbean diaspora is maintained through liming (hanging out) at cricket matches and social events. Speaking in their native Patois language, eating traditional Caribbean foods, and consuming alcohol are significant means of creating spaces in which Caribbean- Canadians can network with other members of the diaspora.

This research aims to identify the factors which play a key role in predicting the outcome of an ODI cricket match and also determine the accuracy of the prediction made using the technique of data mining. In this analysis, statistical significance for various variables which could explain the outcome of an ODI cricket match are explored. Home field advantage, winning the toss, game plan (batting first or fielding first), match type (day or day & night), competing team, venue familiarity and season in which the match is played will be key features studied for the research . For purposes of model-building, three algorithms are adopted: Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machine and Naïve Bayes. Logistic regression is applied to data already obtained from previously played matches to identify which features individually or in combination with other features play a role in the prediction. SVM and Naïve Bayes Classifier are used for model training and predictive analysis. Graphical representation and confusion matrices are used to represent the various sets of models and comparative analysis is done on them. A bidding scenario is also considered to explain the decisions that can be taken after the model has been built.
