As a public institution, Florida Gulf Coast BUniversity has a particular responsibility to eliminate financial barriers that would prevent otherwise qualified students from attending FGCU. That remains one of our highest priorities. Private donors play a key role in helping to break down those financial barriers to higher education, providing a substantial endowment that allowed us to award $1.6 million in scholarships to 900 FGCU students over the past year. We are growing rapidly. This fall we’ll have almost 12,000 students and we expect that to grow to 22,000 within a decade. That will require an even greater investment of private dollars as well as state and federal funds to provide the financial aid our students will need. This year’s President’s Celebration, the theme of which was “The Power of Scholarships,” was very gratifying. I can’t say enough about the generosity of the people of Southwest Florida who so unselfishly establish endowed scholarships. They understand the importance of a thriving university to the region’s social, cultural and economic vitality. They also understand that if we can find ways to keep good students here for their college educations, we can probably find ways to keep them here as they pursue their early careers.
