  • Michigan State Fans Embraced Former Ohio State Coordinators Luke Fickell, Mel Tucker in Hiring Process, According to MSU Publisher
Michigan State Fans Embraced Former Ohio State Coordinators Luke Fickell, Mel Tucker In Hiring Process, According To MSU Publisher On Feb. 4, Mark Dantonio stepped down as Michigan State head coach after 13 seasons with the job, ending his tenure with the most wins by a head coach (114) in program history. With his departure came immediate rumors that the top candidate would be Cincinnati head coach Luke Fickell, who worked as a special teams coach with Dantonio, who was defensive coordinator at Ohio State in 2002 and 2003. Fickell continued to be a member of the Ohio State coaching staff until taking the Cincinnati job in 2017, becoming linebackers coach for the Buckeyes in 2004, then adding a co-defensive coordinator tag from 2005-10 before taking the interim head coaching job in 2011 following the departure of Jim Tressel. After a 6-7 head coaching stint, Fickell went back to his previous position as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the next five seasons. Eventually, Fickell announced he was turning down the position, and the eventual hire went to Mel Tucker, who was coming off a 5-7 season in his first year as Colorado’s head coach. Tucker also has ties back to the Buckeyes, working under Dantonio as Ohio State defensive backs coach from 2001-03. Tucker, who was promoted to co-defensive coordinator, left Ohio State in 2005 for an NFL job as the defensive backs coach for the Cleveland Browns. With all the ties back to Columbus in one way or another, Buckeye Sports Bulletin reached out to Jim Comparoni, the publisher of SpartanMag.com, Michigan State’s website in the Rivals network.

The Columbus native rewrote the defensive record book at Ohio State, starting 50 straight games from 1993-96 at nose tackle and making 212 tackles. A father's diary: Vaughters takes in Ohio State, Notre Dame By Jonathan Vaughters "Just wanted to provide a quick update on our son, James, since you all have requested to be kept in the loop. We had an opportunity to visit Ohio State and Notre Dame on Monday and Tuesday, while visiting Ohio on vacation. Both James' mother and father are originally from Ohio, and they still have relatives there. Both schools were very well-represented, both academically and athletically. "James [left] visited Ohio State on an unofficial visit and had an opportunity to tour the campus, visit with the Student Academic Support Services Organization, and the Fisher School of Business. He had an opportunity to meet with head coach Jim Tressel for an hour. "James said, 'Coach Tressel believes strongly in structure, getting to know his players and positive reinforcement and encouragement.' " "James went on to say, 'I was really impressed with how Coach Tressel gets so involved with the lives of every one of his players.' It was also very impressive how Coach Tressel gets his players very involved, through community service, in the lives of the Columbus, Ohio, community. "James had an opportunity to spend time with one of his cousins, Andre Amos, who is a starting cornerback for the 2009 Buckeyes. James also spent some time with Luke Fickell, the Buckeyes' linebacker coach, who has developed a great track record recently for getting Ohio State linebackers to the next level, including A.J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter, James Laurinaitis and Marcus Freeman. James also met and spoke briefly with Keith Wells, a sophomore out of Gainesville, Ga., who is in competition to get time at defensive end this season.
