The Conference Forum's First Annual Chief Medical Officer Summit for Emerging Life Science Companies is delighted to present a truly distinctive and interactive event for CMOs. The role of a Chief Medical Officer is one that means many things to many people, and indeed is radically different depending on the type of organization in which a CMO works. For a CMO of a small life science company, the role is often an isolated one, but with all the responsibility for driving the clinical development and CRO management while meeting the needs of investors and positioning for an appropriate exit. Chief Medical Officers in most emerging biotechs are playing an increasingly larger role in raising funding for their life science companies. We are dedicated to accomplishing two goals:

1. To bring together CMO executives to address the unique challenges associated with directing and managing all R&D functions with limited resources, while raising capital, working and meeting with investors and strategizing for appropriate exits. 2. To create a network of CMOs from small to mid size life science companies to share ideas, solutions and support.

Do I launch my biotech startup confident that its great idea will catch on and become successful according to the wisdom of the marketplace? Do I start out with a fully conceived exit strategy and make all decisions based on that?

Funding biotech companies has probably never been harder than it is today. The old model of the highly capitalized fully-integrated bricks and mortar biotech with a concept that raises millions dollars in venture funding on its way to going public is a thing of the past.

VC's have less capital, capital is more expensive, M&A and option deals are often negotiated before investors will invest and IPO's are no longer the likely exit.

Today, angels are more active and are investing in therapeutic companies, VC's are looking for lower risk bigger opportunities, and big pharma are playing a larger role in exits and early stage fundings- so come listen to our panel of experts on the latest ideas on how you should set up, manage, partner and fund a new biotech venture today to best ensure "if you build it, they will come."

Should process control automation be interfaced with IT infrastructure? To answer that question, perhaps we can learn from the sage advice of Yogi Berra, who famously once said, "When you come to a fork in the road...take it." When we consider where process control automation is headed and the demands of new paradigms like knowledge management and Stage 3-Continued Process Verification, such interfaces are quickly becoming a necessity rather than an option. Attendees will learn about the changing role of the automation engineer, as well as some of the drivers and issues.

MATTO Seminar and IPUBS: Diagnostic Inventions When: Friday, May 17, 2013 | 3:30 - 5 p.m. Where: Havana Training Room, 5th Floor of Cambridge Innovation Center, One Broadway, Kendall Sq, Cambridge, MA Learn more and register on the Event Website.

Come to this MATTO seminar and learn about the new realities of patenting diagnostic inventions. We are continually asked to review diagnostic inventions to decide whether to file a patent application. The major question used to center around the commercial prospects of the invention - patentability was a more easily answered question about prior art and the novelty and nonobviousness of the invention. However, the patentability of diagnostic inventions has recently become an increasingly murky area of law. The cases Mayo v. Prometheus and Association of Molecular Pathology vs. Myriad Genetics, both recently decided by the Supreme Court and the Federal Circuit, have made patentability of claims to diagnostic inventions more difficult to ascertain. Some elements of diagnostic inventions are now considered "laws of nature" and, thus, not eligible for patent protection.
