ABSTRACT A collection (35-112 m) from the Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia, con- tains three new dromiid species. The distinctive characters of Dromidiopsis richeri n. sp. include three anterolateral teeth and a dense fringe of setae behind the frontal margin. For Cryptodromia marquesas n. sp., the distinctive characters are a strong subhepatic tooth visible dorsally and the presence of five swellings on the branchial area, which give the carapace surface a sculp- tured appearance and for Cryptodromia erioxylon n. sp., a covering of very fine, soft setae, a minutely denticulated orbital margin and a prominent tubercle behind the postorbital corner. There are three new records: Dromia dormia (Linnaeus, 1763), Cryptodromiopsis unidentata (Rüppell, 1830) and Cryptodromia hilgendorfi De Man, 1888. New keys are provided for the iden- tification of the known species of Dromidiopsis and Cryptodromia. Dromia wilsoni (Fulton & Grant, 1902) and the first female specimen of Crypto- dromiopsis plumosa (Lewinsohn, 1984) are reported from Hawaii. Sponges KEY WORDS Crustacea, carried by the dromiids were identified to genus and most of these constitute Decapoda, new records for the Marquesas Islands. The fauna of French Polynesia now Brachyura, Dromiidae, includes 11 dromiid and five dynomenids while the Hawaiian Islands have Dynomenidae, five and four species respectively. -

[E-Mail: [email protected]] Received 30 July 2012; revised 14 January 2013 Coastal environment provides a greater range of habitats and thus potentially supports greater biodiversity. Before starting to produce seeds in a hatchery and culture them in ponds, thorough knowledge about their distribution in nature is important. So the present study is aimed to know the biodiversity of crabs from Arukkattuthurai to Pasipattinam. Totally 79 individual crab species were recorded belonging to 21 families from all 10 stations. Maximum crab species were recorded belonging to the family Portunidae than others families and also the maximum number of crab species 163 were recorded in Mallipattinam (station5) and minimum 69 species in Pasipattinam (station10). Occurrence of crab species in different stations were in the following order; Mallipattinam (163) > Sethubavachatram (161) > Manamelkudi (127) > Pointcalimere (117) > Muthupettai (116) > Jegathapattinam (110) > Kattumavadi (101) > Arukkattuthurai (92) > Adirampattinam (85) > Pasipattinam (69). Crabs were collected plenty during summer and monsoon than pre-monsoon and post-monsoon. The crabs belonging to families viz., Calappidae, Portunidae, Potamidae, Grapsidae, Sesarmidae and Ocypodidae were obtained almost all seasons. Zoosystema 27 (2) : 267-342. ABSTRACT The thoracic sternum of the primitive crabs (Podotremata Guinot, 1977) is strongly modified in females at the level of the sutures 7/8, separating the last two sternites, which corresponds to a secondary specialization of the phrag- mae 7/8. Thus a paired spermatheca has developed, which is intersegmental, internalized and independent of the female gonopores on the coxae of the third pereopods. This is unique to the Podotremata, being completely distinct from the eubrachyuran seminal receptacle. The spermatheca is reviewed in all members of the Podotremata, in its external aspect and internal structure. Among the Dromiacea, a spermathecal tube becomes specialized in the Homolodromiidae, Dromiinae, and Hypoconchinae, while it is absent in the Dynomenidae and Sphaerodromiinae, suggesting that the Sphaerodromiinae are basal to the Hypoconchinae + Dromiinae and that the Dynomenidae are KEY WORDS Spermatheca, basal to the remaining dromiacean families. The phylogenetic implications Podotremata, are discussed, confirming the distinction of two basal clades, Dromiacea and Dromiacea, Dromiidae, Homolidea, the peculiar organization found in the Cyclodorippidae, Hypoconchinae, Cymonomidae and Phyllotymolinidae, and the special condition of the Sphaeodromiinae, Raninoidea. The paired spermatheca proves to be the strongest synapomor- Dynomenidae, Homolodromiidae, phy of the Podotremata, including two Cretaceous families. -
Protein Analysis of the Crab Haemolymph Collected from the Trash

Email: [email protected] Received: 12 July 2013, Revised and Accepted: 22 Aug 2013 ABSTRACT Objectives: To estimate the protein analysis of the crab haemolymph collected from the trash of landing center Pazhayar. Methods: four major crabs found in the trash were identified by Sakai method and taken for sexwise and organwise protein estimation by the Lowry et al method. The female crab haemolymph of Dromia dehaani shows the maximum protein content and hence it was taken for molecular weight estimation by SDS PAGE. Results: The major protein content was found in the female crabs. The sexwise protein estimation shows that among the female crabs of the four species maximum protein profile was in female Dromia dehaani (11.97%) and minimum in female Doclea ovis (4.4%). In male crabs maximum protein content was also recorded in D. dehaani (10%) and minimum in D.ovis (3.8%). In sexwise molecular weight determination of D.dehaani male confirms that protein bands with molecular size ranging from 25kDa and in female show 43 kDa. Conclusion: Hence the present study revealed that the haemolymph can be easily scrutinized without sacrifice. Parmi les dix-neuf espèces examinées, dix ont une large distribution indo-ouest-pacifique, six ne sont connues que de l'océan Indien et sept se trouvent en mer Rouge. Par ailleurs, Petalomera nodosa Sakai, 1936, qui était considérée comme endé- mique du Japon, est signalée à Madagascar, tandis que Sphaerodromia nux Alcock, 1899, qui n'était connue que par les deux spécimens-types, est redécrite après la récolte, à Madagascar, de quatre nouveaux spécimens.
