OVERALL WINNER NEWTONMERE Red Nose Day climbs higher than ever and goes green

Lakelands Academy had a Red nosed Friday, for one of our favourite charities, filled with Comic Relief charity raising Capers. The morning kicked off with fancy dress competitions, closely followed by a very delicious break time Bake Off competition and cake sale and then a quick jaunt up Everest to burn off all those extra cake calories. The morning school run was very colourful as students appeared as a pose of cowboys, a dinosaur, banana, minion, Dennis the Menace, Dobby and many more. Staff also made appearances as a swarm of bees, a lumberjack, hippie, Mexican, Cruella De Vil, Macbeth’s 3 witches, 80s popstars and the Lakelands Dream Team. Morning assemblies gave us the opportunity to take a look at what these comic capers are all about and what incredible causes our fundraising goes toward supporting. Then it was back to raucous costumed merriment, songs and antics, where prizes were awarded across the year groups and staff based upon the always rousing cheerometer scale. Students not only made costumed appearances but a huge number also entered the Lakelands Bake Off competition. Year 7, 8 and 9 students entered 6 identical small bakes and Years 9 and 10 a layered cake. “We are super proud of our wonderful students” said Head of Years 7 & 8, Miss Mansfield “We have been overwhelmed by the number of Bake Off entrants and stunned by the hidden culinary and artistic talent that has emerged during the competition.” The cakes ranged from gooey rocky road cupcakes’ to a 5 layer ice cream cake, an Easter inspired bake with mini eggs and a white bunny moulded from icing and a myriad of red nose inspired cakes. The presentation was utterly immaculate. “I cannot believe the level of skill in some of these incredible cakes, and I am so proud of everybody who has taken the trouble to enter”. Said Miss Bellis. “These amazing bakes and creations have incorporated some incredible flavour combinations and creativity. Well done to all competitors. The judging is going to be incredibly tough.” said Food Technology Teacher Miss Marks. One cake, entered by 10N was baked, decorated and assembled as a whole class creation, literally depicting themselves and their classroom. Bethany Pickett who made the ice cream inspired creation said “I am very happy with my cake, I am confident it will go far as I chose good flavours and colours.” Olivia Mooney who entered a chocolate mint creation said “I’m happy with how my cake turned out and also the standard. Everyone else’s are amazing, everyone has done well.” Name Cake name Details

The hall was filled with students and staff for the break and lunch time cake sales and auction. The fantastic festival atmosphere in school was stepped up by rousing performances from the staff band and our environmentally friendly red nose painting where students were encouraged to get involved with the non-plastic enviro-swing alternative and have their red nose painted on instead of buying the plastic red noses. Heaps of praise were also lauded by Mr Crilly, Mr Palshis, Miss Davie and Mrs Milford for the Year 9 climbers who smashed the Everest Challenge. More than half the Year 9 students from each of the four tutor groups ascended our Everest Challenge by walking up the Lakelands stairs as a relay for comic relief and raised sponsorship money of over £550. “The students between them walked up and down the stairs 4023 times, a vertical distance of 12,000 metres. They did so well they climbed Everest and were almost halfway up again. We are so proud of their efforts, some of them really didn’t realise how hard and tiring it was going to be but they were really enthusiastic throughout.” Praised Mr Crilly “Today has been a fantastic day, and the atmosphere round school has been terrific. A truly great Friday for Lakelands Academy, with lots of memories made. Thank you so much to everyone for getting involved. It’s so well worth it and we are so proud of our students’ commitment and enthusiasm today.” Commented Mrs Bellis “There are still bits to come in, but so far our fantastic students, staff and supporters have raised a magnificent £,1093.11 for Comic Relief. Brilliant!” SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR 4TH - 11TH JULY

The Taylor Brothers Vault to Show Jumping Triumph The Taylor brothers, Seamus in Year 9 and Kieran in Year 8 at Lakelands Academy, both took firsts at British Show Jumping competitions earlier this year, both working hard toward their goal of qualifying for this year’s Horse of the Year Show. Seamus jumped to success at the Fox Hunter competition held at Arena UK in Grantham On Sunday 3rd March, taking a first at the 148cm pony premier organised by the British Show Jumping Association. This national event was a course of 14, 110cm jumps and out of 32 competitors Seamus took the first place Rosette and prize money. The weekend before that, Kieran won the first place rosette and prize money for the British Show Jumping Winter Second Round 138cm at the Richmond Equestrian centre in Yorkshire, with 2 clear rounds of 115cm and 130cm jumps, qualifying him to compete at the Royal International Horse Show in June. “We don’t compete against each other at the moment because Seamus rides slightly bigger horses” revealed Kieran “We get on really well so when we do, it won’t cause any problems”. “We compete almost every weekend” said Seamus. “Our prize money funds our travel and entrance fees.” “We get up at 5.30am every morning to ride 2 or 3 ponies each and we also ride when we get home from school each day.” explained Kieran. “It takes a lot of dedication but we can’t imagine not doing it and we’re used to getting up early. We do this 365 days a year and even on Christmas day, we open our presents after we have exercised the ponies. We really love riding. ” THE GREAT LAKELANDS BAKE OFF Incredible Edible Lakelands Talent! On Friday 15 March. 2019 Lakelands held a bake off in support of comic relief. The competition consisted of over 40 bakes, all entries were made at home and then brought in on Friday morning, for the first round of judging. The judging board were none other than: - Science teacher , Miss Mansfield - Head teacher, Miss Bellis - Food teacher, Miss Marks The standard was phenomenal. The cakes ranged from gooey rocky road cupcakes’ to a 5 layer ice cream cake. One of the 5 amazing cakes belonged to Annabel Cole and Amy Jeffreys: the cake was an Easter inspired bake with mini eggs and a white bunny. The presentation was utterly immaculate. “I cannot believe the level of skill in some of these incredible cakes, and I am so proud of everybody who has taken the trouble to enter”. Said Mrs Bellis. This is what the bakers had to say: Bethany Pickett said “I am very happy with my cake, I am confident it will go far as I chose good flavours and colours.” Olivia Mooney said “I’m happy with how my cake turned out and also the standard. Everyone else’s are amazing, everyone has done well.” The competition was also a family affair as Olivia’s brother, Billy also entered a phenomenal set of Italian peach cookies complete with custard, peach as well as sugar coated. After the judging, it was time to sell the runners up cakes with all the profits going to comic relief. Alex Palmer who made the cake ‘catastrophe’ said that “everyone else’s cakes are of an amazing level and very tasty” As well as Alex a lot of students and teachers felt the same way about the cakes. “It is amazing how much trouble has gone into making them. It will be tough to decide the win- ner” – Mrs Parkhurst. The final is set to be held on the 29th March. The Lakelands press (Michael Burgess and Daniel Jones) THE GREAT LAKELANDS BAKE OFF FINAL

Following on from Lakelands Academy’s hugely successful Bake Off, at which students wowed teachers and their peers with incredible culinary skills and raised over £200 for comic relief, the final was held at Lakelands Academy where students had to create a further baking masterpiece, this time being judged by Yossi Gliksman, owner of Upstairs Downstairs in Oswestry. The finalists spent 2 ¾ hours baking and crafting a further stunning array of masterpieces. The Food technology room, despite it being the final round and some great prizes on offer, was a fair- ly calm and relaxed environment. Competitors displayed a purposeful but friendly and supportive air, offering help and advice to each other whilst they strived to create layer upon layer of sponge, enrobing it in an endless rainbow of buttercream coatings, and topping it off with hand moulded chocolates, sugared flowers and a final dash of glitter here and there. “I’m overwhelmed by the amount of talent and at such a very high level” said Head Teacher Mrs Bellis. Miss Mansfield, the competition organiser agreed, “I’m very proud of the talent the students have shown today. Even with all of the competition stress, the cakes are really professional and are truly breath-taking.” Guest judge, Yossi Gliksman was incredibly impressed with not only their teamwork, skill and techniques but also how fantastic the end results tasted. “I am thrilled with the outcomes of this Bake Off as well As the camaraderie of the morning. It makes me feel very proud.” Stated food Technology Teacher, Miss Marks. THE GREAT LAKELANDS BAKE OFF FINAL RESULTS

KS4 OVERALL WINNER ELLIE ROBINSON - STAR BAKER 2019 Royal Navy call in for a culinary demonstration, tasting and cooking challenge The food department were delighted to welcome the Royal Navy to work alongside the GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition and two groups of Year 9 pupils. In the morning, the Year 9’s watched a live cooking demonstration and careers information about life in the Navy and the numerous job possibilities that were available. The pupils were allowed to taste test the creamy garlic tagliatelle with chicken, basil & mozzarella roulade with grilled asparagus spears which had been presented in two different ways. The food quickly disappeared leaving empty plates. In the afternoon Year 10 took part in an interactive team cooking activity, working in small groups they were given trays with ingredients that differed slightly from each other and a set of basic store cupboard ingredients. In a short space of time they needed to think of a main and a dessert and plan how this would be achieved in the one hour of cooking. “Ready, steady, Lakelands get cooking”. SHOW MY HOMEWORK

It is an expectation that all students log on to Show My Homework every day. If they have login problems, they must immediately go to Reception where they will be issued with a new PIN.

We urge all parents / carers to access Show My Homework regularly – to monitor what homework is being set, how long should be spent on it and when it is due in. It can be accessed via the school website but the easiest way is to download the free Show My Homework App on your smartphone or tablet, which will automatically alert you when new homework has been set.

Being able to regularly monitor your child’s homework schedule means you can support them more effectively with this crucial part of their daily learning – ensuring it is completed to the very best standard and submitted on time.

Please contact Reception if you need new login details.
