Julian Hirsch 2 Acknowledgements In some ways the groundwork for my thesis and work on the ONESC Initiative began more than five years ago in a kitchen in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. I was meeting Dr. Elizabeth Bloch Smith for the first time and could scarcely have imagined that our meeting would lead to my participation in an archaeological excavation in Israel that summer. After my first excavation, I was hooked. The spring before I came to Oberlin was filled with weekly meetings, readings, and discussions with Liz. I learned so much in that time and appreciate her continued guidance and support. If Liz was responsible for exposing me to just how fascinating the archaeology of the southern Levant was, Dr. Jeffrey Blakely was the person who helped me find the path where I could follow my passion at Oberlin. I still have my notes from the first day of the January 2017 Winter Term. I was amazed by everything Jeff knew about the history of biblical archaeology at the college and the history of the collection. If anything inspired me throughout my work, it was hearing vivid stories from Jeff about sitting in Harry Thomas Frank’s classroom learning about archaeology. Jeff has truly been my partner at every step of the way. I’ve consulted him for advice numerous times. Jeff kindly provided invaluable suggestions that only a true veteran of the field could offer. Rebecca Kasmin The Vandalism of the Mosaics in the Severan Synagogue in Hammat Tiberias Rebecca Kasmin In the third and fourth century CE, the ancient city of Hammat Tiberias, located in modern-day Israel, developed as a Jewish center. One of its synagogues, excavated in the 1960s, contains a remarkable floor mosaic, one of the earliest synagogue mosaics in the country. It is composed of several panels, depicting traditional Jewish religious objects, as well as a zodiac wheel, complete with personifications of the four seasons, plus the figure of the god Helios in the middle, riding in his chariot. The extraordinary nature and circumstances of the mosaic and synagogue make its recent vandalism all the more difficult to bear. This article analyzes the vandalism of the mosaics that occurred on May 29, 2012, which seems most likely to be attributable to the Haredim, an ultra-orthodox sect of Judaism. After a discussion of the history of the site, and an analysis of the mosaics themselves, I discuss the perpetrators and their motive, the physical damage, recent comparable acts, and what could be done to prevent future attacks of a similar nature. Ancient Synagogues in the Holy Land - What Synagogues? By David Landau 1. To believe archaeologists, the history of the Holy Land in the first few centuries of the Christian Era goes like this: After many year of staunch opposition to foreign influence the Jews finally adopted pagan symbols; they decorated their synagogues with naked Greek idols (Hammat Tiberias) or clothed ones (Beth Alpha), carved images of Zeus on their grave (Beth Shearim), depicted Hercules (Chorazin) and added a large swastika turning to the left (En Gedi) to their repertoire, etc. Incredible. I maintain that the so-called synagogues were actually Roman temples built during the reign of Maximin (the end of the 3rd century and beginning of the 4th) as a desperate means to fight what the roman considered the Christian menace. I base my conclusion on my study of the orientations of these buildings, their decorations and a testimony of the Christian historian Eusebius of Caesaria. 2. In 1928, foundations of an ancient synagogue were discovered near kibbutz Beth Alpha in the eastern Jezreel Valley at the foot of Mt. Gilboa. Eleazar Sukenik, the archaeologist who excavated the site wrote (1932: 11): Like most of the synagogues north of Jerusalem and west of the Jordan, the building is oriented in an approximately southerly direction. -

Jewish Women in Ancient Synagogues: Archeological Reality vs. Rabbinical Legislation Jewish Women in Ancient Synagogues: Archeological Reality vs. Rabbinical Legislation Hannah Wortzman1, Hebrew University, Jerusalem Israel Abstract Several ancient synagogues, active from the fourth to the sixth century of the Common Era, contained images of women with exposed body parts, against which the Talmudic sages legislated and deemed licentious. This paper suggests that despite the rabbinic legislation requiring women to cover certain parts of their body, segments of the Jewish society held different views as to what was considered indecent. Moreover, the fact that these images were discovered in synagogues proposes an even bolder assumption, that is, that these women’s images were tolerated during the services. Introduction In the field of ancient Jewish history, textual and archeological evidence are often the only sources of information that historians can access to describe the past. When these two sources differ in their presentation of the past, one needs to re-examine the literary evidence and question the historical accuracy and intention of the texts. In treating the Babylonian Talmud as textual evidence, one could question why the authors or editors of the texts decided to ignore the reality of the environment in which they lived. What can we learn from the differences, if they are apparent, between the texts and the archeological findings? To what extent was the rabbinical rulings actually implemented by ancient Jewish communities in Israel and the Diaspora? Erwin Goodenough, followed by Jacob Neusner, appropriately answer some of these questions by noting that in fact "rabbinic control had lapsed" by the third century CE.2 This is evident when comparing the images of women in ancient synagogues to the dress code imposed on Jewish women. -

The Israel travel guide you are reading is a greatly expanded version of one I first prepared for an American friend some two decades ago. In it, I have tried to share my experiences and knowledge of Israel based on a lifetime of study and fifteen visits to the country, most recently in May 2016. I enjoy independent travel, and this guide was written primarily with such travelers in mind, though I hope the information will be helpful to those on group tours as well. As an American, I have produced a guide that, no doubt, reflects that identify and experience. I hope my readers from other countries will forgive that, and still find useful information to help plan their trips. I am not in the travel industry. Rather, I am a labor lawyer who loves Israel passionately and wants to encourage others to travel there and experience this wonderful land. My first visit was in November 1988, and I caught the bug; thus I started visiting every other year or so thereafter, except for 2000-2004, the truly terrible years of the second Palestinian uprising and the terror bombings in Israel cities. Now, with partial retirement, I am going every year (God willing!). Even with the mostly peaceful conditions prevailing since then, some friends still asked, “are you sure you want to go back to Israel?” Of course, recent tensions in Jerusalem, with a wave of stabbing attacks on Israelis, have further increased those anxieties, even for me to some degree. -

Tessa Rajak: “Surviving the Book: The Greek Bible and Jewish Identity in the Ancient Mediterranean Diaspora” AND Steven Fine: “Jewish ‘Identity at the Limes: The Jews of Dura Europos between Rome and Persia” RESPONSE: LEE LEVINE Tessa Rajak and Steven Fine address two very important issues in understanding Jewish culture of later antiquity – biblical translation and the languages used by the Jews on the one hand, and synagogue art and epigraphy on the other. Since the source materials discussed by each are quite disparate and deal with very different geographical regions, historical contexts, and cultural media, I shall begin by treating each separately and then conclude with some final reflections on the common issue raised by both. Rajak’s paper on the Septuagint and the nature of its translation of the Hebrew Bible can be divided into two parts. The first two thirds deals with the Septuagint’s technique and rationale of translation while the last third discusses the centrality of the Hebrew language in defining Jewish identity in the Diaspora. Each of these topics merits a response. Rajak first elucidates the distinctive idiomatic Greek in the translations of the Septuagint’s different books. She notes that the apparent deviations from the accepted and more usual Greek idiom are not due to the translators’ limited command of the language or the inferiority of their style, but rather to their desire to approximate as much as possible the style and idiosyncrasies of the Hebrew original.
