Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com An American-born painter who emigrated to Canada, the artist Mary Meigs is best known for her literary contributions and her feminist activism on behalf of elderly lesbians. Mary Meigs was born on April 27, 1917 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to physiologist Edward Browning Meigs and Margaret Wister Meigs. After spending most of her childhood in the Washington, D. C. area, Meigs returned to Pennsylvania to attend Bryn Mawr College. After earning a B.A. in 1939, she returned to the Seven Sisters school as an English and creative writing instructor. With the outbreak of World War II, Meigs joined the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), a part of the U.S. Navy. She served as a lieutenant junior grade from 1942 until 1945. A fellow WAVE provided her sexual initiation. Following the war, Meigs studied art at the Art Students' League in New York from 1945 to 1947. She became a painter, honing her talents under the guidance of close friends and fellow artists Henry Poor and his stepdaughter Anne Poor. Meigs held her first exhibition of landscapes and portraits in 1950. Through the Poors, Meigs met author Barbara Deming in 1954. The two became companions almost immediately and settled in a house in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. Both women remained closeted, however. Meigs and Deming were part of a Cape Cod artistic circle that included abstract painter Philip Rothko, critic Edmund Wilson, and writer Mary McCarthy. -

Money for Women/Barbara Deming Memorial Fund, Inc
MONEY FOR WOMEN/BARBARA DEMING MEMORIAL FUND, INC. GRANTS AWARDED JUNE 2017 POETRY AND NON FICTION Barbara Deming (1917-1984) was a feminist, lesbian, poet, writer, and nonviolent activist in the civil rights, anti-war and women’s movements. She founded the Money for Women Fund in 1975 and said, “In my life I’ve been helped as a writer to do my work. I think it’s fair that I try to help others.” Now a memorial fund, and also sustained by the late writer and artist Mary Meigs and generous contributions from donors and former grantees, the fund gives encouragement and small grants to individual feminists in the arts (writers and visual artists). Our address is PO Box 717 Bearsville, NY 12409. Our website is www.demingfund.org. Submission periods and deadlines for applications occur once a year: January 1- 31, 2017 and again in 2019 for poetry and nonfiction, and January 1 - 31, 2018 and 2020 for visual art, fiction and mixed-genre. Judges in 2017 for Poetry were: Judith McDaniel, Camille Norton, Alice Templeton, Crystal Williams and Elizabeth Wohl. For Non Fiction: Maureen Brady, Martha Hughes, Roz Kuehn, Mina Samuels, Glenda Pleasants and Elvia Arriola. Grants totaling $20,050 were awarded to 18 women. SMITI-I'S PACIFIC NORTHWEST AMERICANA A CHECK LIST OF BOOKS AND PAMPHLETS RELATING TO THE HISTORY OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST EDITION 3, REVISED AND EXTENDED BY ISABEL MAYHEW OREGON HISTORICAL SOCIETY BINFORDS Sc MORT, Publishers, PORTLAND, OREGON 1950 FOREWORD IN April 1908, Charles W. Smith, Assistant Librarian of the University of Washington, was induced by fellow librarians to prepare a co-operative check list of books and pamphlets relating to the Pacific Northwest and available in librar- ies of the region. A plan was agreed upon whereby each library furnished a card list of its holdings to Mr. Smith, who as compiler codified the records and edited the resultant union list. The volume was published in 1909 by the Washington State Library under the title, Check-List of Books and Pamphlets Relating to the History of the Pacific Northwest to be Found in Representative Libraries of That Region. The title indicates clearly that the intention of the compiler and his collaborators was to prepare a list of actual holdings and not a comprehensive bibliography. Twelve years later, most of the libraries had grown in stature and their hold- ings of Pacific Northwest Americana had more than trebled.It was time to prepare a second edition, revised and enlarged, and one might even say consider- ably improved for the librarians of the region had learned much about biblio- graphy in more than a decade of growth and experience. Ihis edition, bearing the short title, Pacific Northwest Americana, was published in 1921. Eighteen libraries co-operated in its preparation. -

Even when used for utilitarian pur- poses, Harris’s work still “maintains a ceremo- nial sensibility, an impression that has deliber- ately been cultivated,” she said. Harris typically uses an iron-bearing clay, which she textures with carved and impressed designs, often populated by small animal and insect motifs. The intersecting geometric circles and triangles create balance and visual appeal. Color ranges from starkly white to a light- absorbing skin that appears almost black.
