SUMMARY

Project Name: Dodford Wharf Farm Location: High Street, Weedon, Northamptonshire NGR: 462874 260089 Type: Evaluation Date: 9-10 November 2020 Location of Archive: To be deposited with the Northamptonshire Archaeological Resource Centre Site Code: DWF 20 Event No: ENN110039

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in November 2020 on land at Dodford Wharf Farm, High Street, Weedon, Northamptonshire. Twelve trenches were excavated across the 1.7ha site. A preceding Archaeological Desk-based Assessment and Geophysical Survey indicated the potential for heritage assets of archaeological interest to survive within the development area.

The evaluation identified five ditches, two pits and a posthole in the northern part of the site. These features were artefactually undated. Two of the ditches corresponded closely to a sub-circular geophysical anomaly.

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 In November 2020 Cotswold Archaeology (CA) carried out an archaeological evaluation on land at Dodford Wharf Farm, High Street, Weedon, Northamptonshire (centred at NGR: 462874 260089; Fig. 1). This evaluation was commissioned by Barry Howard Homes.

1.2 Planning permission (application ref: DA/2019/029) had been granted by Daventry District Council (DDC) for an outline application for the demolition of existing agricultural buildings and redevelopment to provide up to 47 dwellings, widening and improvement of existing vehicular access and road off the A45 on land at Dodford Wharf Farm. Permission was subject to a suite of conditions one of which (condition 27) requires the implementation of a programme of archaeological works.

1.3 Following discussions with the Assistant Archaeological Advisor, Northamptonshire County Council (Liz Mordue – AAANCC), the first stage of the programme comprised a geophysical survey, undertaken in 2019 (Magnitude 2019, see section 2 below) that identified anomalies of probable archaeological and uncertain origin. Consequently, the requirement for a second stage of work, comprising a trial trench evaluation, was defined by the AAANCC, in their capacity as archaeological advisor to DDC.

1.4 The evaluation was carried out in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) produced by CA (2020) and approved by the AAANCC. The fieldwork also followed the Standard and guidance for archaeological field evaluation (CIfA 2014), Management and Research Projects in the Historic Environment (MoRPHE) PPN3: Archaeological Excavation (Historic 2015) and Management of Research Projects in the Historic Environment (MoRPHE): Project Manager’s Guide (Historic England 2015).

1.5 The evaluation fieldwork was monitored by the AAANCC, including a site visit on 10th November 2020.

The site 1.6 The evaluation site comprises two plots of land measuring c.1.7ha in total extent. The site is bounded to the west by the West Coast mainline (formerly known as the

London and North-Western Railway), to the east by the (formerly known as the Grand Junction Canal), and to the south by the A45. The recorded geology within the site comprises siltstone and mudstone of the Dyrham Formation (BGS 2020), overlain by superficial glaciofluvial deposits of sand and gravel with freely-draining slightly acid but base-rich soils (Cranfield University 2019).

2. ARCHAEOLOGICAL BACKGROUND

2.1 The site has been the subject of a Heritage Desk-Based Assessment (CA 2018) and a Geophysical Survey (Magnitude Surveys 2019). The following text is summarised briefly from these sources, which should be referred to for a more-comprehensive background.

Prehistoric period (pre-AD 43) 2.2 Cropmarks visible on historic aerial photographs of land outlying Hadland House Farm, c.800m north-east of the site, are indicative of the buried remains of ring ditches (as typically surround Bronze Age barrows, a type of funerary monument, and Bronze and Iron Age roundhouses) and sub-rectangular ditched forms (as are typical of Iron Age or Romano-British settlement and/or livestock enclosures).

2.3 During a programme of archaeological work undertaken by Northamptonshire Archaeology for the proposed A45 to Daventry Link Road, geophysical survey identified a previously-unknown sub-rectangular enclosure on the east-facing slopes overlooking the , c.400m north-west of the site. It measured c.50m x c.40m with a possible entrance on the north side and had adjoining enclosures on the north and south sides. A subsequent evaluation established an Iron Age date for this enclosure ditch.

Roman Period (AD 43 – 410) 2.4 Geophysical survey of land to the south of Church Street, c.950m south-east of the site, has detected ‘a complex network of positive linear and curving anomalies probably representing former ditches’ of three sub-circular enclosures and associated features of probable later prehistoric and/or Romano-British settlement activity. This site likely represents a small farmstead that either preceded the Roman

4 © Cotswold Archaeology Dodford Wharf Farm, High Street, Weedon, Northamptonshire: Archaeological Evaluation

conquest or co-existed with higher status romanised rural settlements such as Whitehall Villa at Nether Heyford, c. 2.3km south-east of Weedon.

2.5 The A5 traces the route of the Roman road of , which connected the port of Dover with the town of Wroxeter via numerous other Roman towns such as , passing c. 40m to the east of the site. However, there are no indications of associated roadside activity in the vicinity of the site.

Early medieval and medieval (AD 410 – 1549) 2.6 Archaeological investigations in and around Church Street, c. 950m south-east of the site, have recorded evidence only for Saxon and medieval occupation and domestic activity.

2.7 An archaeological evaluation conducted to the rear of 46 Church Street in 1994, c. 600m south of the site, recorded a series of ditches and several pits, associated with early medieval pottery.

Post-medieval and modern periods (AD 1549 to present) 2.8 The site likely remained as agricultural land throughout the post-medieval period. In the early to mid-18th century, turnpike roads were established through/around Weedon – along what are now the A5 and the A45. In 1790, the Grand Junction Canal was built: extending through the settlement of Weedon on the west side of the A5. Its winding northerly continuation through agricultural land truncated the fields of which the site was formerly part and the canal now defines the eastern boundary of the site. The towpath was on the opposite (east) bank of the canal. Later cartographic evidence suggests a coal wharf existing within the site.

Geophysical Survey 2.9 The geophysical survey detected a large circular ditch-like anomaly along the site’s northern boundary that indicated the potential for possible prehistoric or Roman activity within the site. However, the full extent of this feature was partially obscured by the responses of ferrous material and a modern trackway. Other anomalies primarily related to the historical agricultural use of site and had been interpreted as ploughing trends, drains, and a modern trackway (Magnitude 2019).

3. OBJECTIVES

3.1 The general objective of the evaluation was to provide further information on the likely archaeological resource within the site, including its presence/absence, character, extent, date and state of preservation. This information will enable DDC, as advised by the AAANCC, to identify and assess the particular significance of any archaeological heritage assets within the site, consider the impact of the proposed development upon that significance and, if appropriate, develop strategies to avoid or minimise conflict between the conservation of those heritage assets and the development proposals. This process is in line with policies contained the National Planning Policy Framework (MHCLG 2019).

3.2 The specific aim of the evaluation was to investigate the possible ring-ditch and other features highlighted by the geophysical survey (Magnitude Surveys 2019).

4. METHODOLOGY

4.1 The fieldwork comprised the excavation of 12 trenches in the locations shown on figure 2. All trenches were 30m long, 1.9m wide and were set out on OS National Grid (NGR) co-ordinates using Leica GPS and surveyed in accordance with CA Technical Manual 4 Survey Manual.

4.2 All trenches were excavated by mechanical excavator equipped with a toothless grading bucket. All machine excavation was undertaken under constant archaeological supervision to the top of the first significant archaeological horizon or the natural substrate, whichever was encountered first. Where archaeological deposits were encountered they were excavated by hand in accordance with CA Technical Manual 1: Fieldwork Recording Manual.

4.3 Deposits were assessed for their palaeoenvironmental potential in accordance with CA Technical Manual 2: The Taking and Processing of Environmental and Other Samples from Archaeological Sites and two deposit was sampled and processed. All artefacts recovered were processed in accordance with Technical Manual 3 Treatment of Finds Immediately after Excavation.

4.4 The archive from the evaluation is currently held by CA at their offices in Milton Keynes until deposited with the Northamptonshire Archaeological Resource Centre at Chester Farm, Northamptonshire.

4.5 A summary of information from this project, set out within Appendix C, will be entered onto the OASIS online database of archaeological projects in Britain.

5. RESULTS

5.1 This section provides an overview of the evaluation results. Detailed summaries of the recorded contexts and the palaeoenvironmental evidence can be found in Appendices A and B respectively.

5.2 The natural substrate encountered during the evaluation varied across the site but mainly comprised yellowish brown sandy clays and orange silty sands. The natural substrate was exposed in all trenches at a depth of 0.25m−0.9m below the present ground level and was generally sealed by subsoil and topsoil, although in two trenches, T4 and T5 located at the lower part of the site, colluvial layers were present sealing the substrate and covered in turn by the subsoil.

5.3 Archaeological features were identified in T1, T2, T3, T4, T6 and T8. These trenches are discussed in more detail below. The rest of the trenches were devoid of archaeological features and are not discussed any further. All archaeological features were cut into the natural substrate and were sealed by the subsoil.

Trench 1 (Figs 2, 3 & 4) 5.4 North-west/south-east orientated ditch 103 was identified in the northern part of T1. This ditch, which was on the location of a curvilinear geophysical anomaly that continued into T2, was 1.05m wide and 0.3m deep (Fig. 4, Sec. AA) and contained a single fill (104) that produced two undiagnostic flint flakes. An environmental sample (1) was retrieved from the single fill but contained no charred plant remains and only a small number of charcoal fragments (see section 7 below).

Trench 2 (Figs 2, 3 & 4) 5.5 Ditch 203 was identified in T2, closely corresponding to a curvilinear geophysical anomaly. This ditch was north-east/south-west orientated and measured 0.85m in

7 © Cotswold Archaeology Dodford Wharf Farm, High Street, Weedon, Northamptonshire: Archaeological Evaluation

width and 0.25m in depth (Fig. 4, Sec. BB). It contained a single sedimentary fill (204) from which no artefactual material was recovered.

Trench 3 (Figs 2, 3 & 5) 5.6 North-east/south-west aligned ditch 303 was revealed in the southern part of this trench. Ditch 303 was 0.7m wide and 0.24m deep (Fig. 5, Sec. CC). No artefactual material was retrieved from its single fill, 304. This ditch had not been detected by the previous geophysical survey.

Trench 4 (Figs 2, 3 and 5) 5.7 Three cut features were revealed in the north-western part of T4. North-east/south- west orientated ditch 407 was 0.38 m wide and 0.18m deep (Fig. 5, Sec. FF). This ditch terminated within the trench and had not been identified during the geophysical survey. To its immediate south-east, pit 405 and posthole 403 were identified. Pit 405 was 0.75m wide and 0.25m deep (Fig. 5, Sec. EE). Posthole 403 was 0.25m wide and 0.15m deep (Fig. 5, Sec. DD). These three features each contained an artefactually undated single fill.

Trench 6 (Figs 2, 3 & 6) 5.8 Ditch 603 was north-east/south-west aligned and measured 0.6m wide and 0.16m deep (Fig. 6, Sec. GG). It contained an undated sedimentary fill, 604. Ditch 603 corresponded to a linear geophysical anomaly.

Trench 8 (Figs 2, 3 &6) 5.9 Pit 803 was revealed in the north-western part of T8. This pit was 0.7m in width and 0.18m in depth (Fig. 6, Sec. HH) and featured a single charcoal-rich fill (804) that contained no finds. An environmental sample (2) was taken from this deposit that again produced no charred plant remains but did contain small quantities of charcoal fragments, including those of roundwood (see section 7 below).

6. THE FINDS

6.1 The artefactual material is recorded from one deposit: the fill of a ditch (Appendix B). The material was recovered from a bulk soil sample (1).

8 © Cotswold Archaeology Dodford Wharf Farm, High Street, Weedon, Northamptonshire: Archaeological Evaluation

Flint by Pete Banks 6.2 The finds from the evaluation have been recorded direct to an Excel spreadsheet from which Appendix B (Table 1) is derived and now forms part of the project archive. The flints were scanned by context and quantified according to fragment count and weight.

6.3 Two flint chips (1g), small flakes (debitage) resulting from knapping, were recorded from sample 1, taken from ditch fill 104 of ditch 103. They are otherwise undiagnostic and due to the small size of the assemblage it is not possible to provide any further meaningful commentary.

7. THE ENVIRONMENTAL EVIDENCE

Palaeoenvironmental Assessment by Emma Aitken 7.1 Two environmental samples (39 litres of soil) were processed from two trenches (trench 1 and trench 8). This was done to evaluate the preservation of palaeoenvironmental remains in this area and with the intention of recovering environmental evidence of industrial or domestic activity on the site. Any environmental remains recovered might also possibly give an indication of the nature of the local environment. It was also hoped that the samples might assist with the dating of these features. The samples were processed by standard flotation procedures (CA Technical Manual No. 2).

Trench 1 7.2 Ditch 103 - sample 1 from ditch fill 104 contained no charred plant remains and only a small number of charcoal fragments, which are iron impregnated and show signs of vitrification.

Trench 8 7.3 Pit 803 - pit 803 contained a single fill 804 (sample 2) which produced no charred plant remains. Moderately small quantities of charcoal fragments, including those of roundwood, were noted in the assemblage but many of these fragments are silt impregnated which inhibits wood species identification.

9 © Cotswold Archaeology Dodford Wharf Farm, High Street, Weedon, Northamptonshire: Archaeological Evaluation

Summary 7.4 Both sample 1 (ditch 103) and sample 2 (pit 803) contained no charred plant remains and are likely to be indicative of wind blown/dispersed waste material. The environmental materials recovered from both assemblages provide no insight into a possible date for ditch 103 or pit 803. There is no indication from the samples, for any industrial or domestic settlement activity taking place in the immediate vicinity of these trenches.

8. DISCUSSION

8.1 The evaluation identified five ditches, two pits and a posthole. These features were concentrated in the northern part of the site. With the exception of two undiagnostic pieces of flint debitage from ditch 103 in trench 1, no artefactual material was recovered from any of these features, which makes an accurate assessment of the area difficult at present.

8.2 The evaluation demonstrated a moderate degree of correlation between the results of the preceding geophysical survey (Magnitude Surveys 2019) and the identified archaeological features. Only two shallow ditches revealed in T3 and T4 had not previously been identified by the geophysical survey. Particularly accurate was the correlation between ditches 103 and 203 and the curvilinear geophysical anomaly targeted by T1 and T2.

8.3 The results of the geophysical survey and the evaluation clearly suggest that ditches 103 and 203 revealed in T1 and T2 in the north-western part of the site form part of a sub-circular ditched enclosure. No archaeological features were identified within the interior of the enclosure ditch, although evaluation of the interior space was constrained by the presence of an existing footpath/ track.
