I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

  • Free Agents: Until the Mid-Seventies, Baseball’S Superstars Stayed with Their Teams for Their Entire Careers
ALL EARS!! The Litchfield Fund Weekly Newsletter “We just don’t hear it on the street, we have our ears spread across all the fields!!!!!” The sports woes of our hometown, Cleveland, are well known & too numerous to recount in this essay. Many place the blame on the “Curse of Rocky Colavito,” which began on April 17, 1960. The original Rock, Mr. Colavito turned 85 this week. He was a hero to young Cleveland baseball fans, leading the league in home runs in 1959, as the Indians finished in second place. But on that fateful April date, Tribe GM Frank “Trader” Lane sent Rocky to the Tigers for batting champion Harvey Kuenn! The Indians entered a baseball winning drought that lasted for 35 years & Mr. Lane became forever known as “Traitor” Lane! Free Agents: Until the mid-seventies, baseball’s superstars stayed with their teams for their entire careers. They became part of a city’s culture, profile & fame! Fans knew their heroes would be on the field each year & there was strong loyalty between the fans & the players. And perhaps, in these simpler times, fans took great comfort in knowing Stan Musial was & forever a Cardinal, Ted Williams a Red Sox, Joe DiMaggio a Yankee & Bob Feller an Indian! It was Curt Flood who paved the way for free agency by fighting the ‘reserve clause’ in the courts, but Andy Messerschmidt & Dave McNally were the first free agents in 1975! Since then, players in all sports have been able to hit free agency as their careers progress. It has led to higher salaries, bigger TV contracts, mega-sponsorship deals, super teams, less loyalty, higher ticket prices & heartbroken fans.

  • RELATIVITY and NORMALIZATION What Is It?
RELATIVITY AND NORMALIZATION What is it? • Relativity and Normalization can be used when making comparisons between and among players, teams and eras. • Helps “level the playing field” when comparing stats • Can help determine whether it was “more difficult” for Babe Ruth to hit home runs in the 1920s, or Sammy Sosa to hit home runs in the 1990s. • Transforms raw statistics into a new number, up to four decimal places. Example • Ralph Kiner, of the Pirates, in 1947: • Kiner hit 51 HR in 565 at-bats, for an HR to at-bat ratio of 51/565 = .0903 • Shows that he hit about 9 HR for every 100 at-bats, normally • In the Major Leagues in 1947: All players on the 16 teams hit a total of 1,565 home runs in 84,436 at-bats. What is the ratio? • 1565/84436 = .0185, or showing the “average” player hit slightly less than 2 HR per 100 at-bats • To find the normalization number, divide Kiner’s number by the overall number • .0903/.0185 = 4.8689 Interpretation • How do we interpret the normalization number? • One possibility is that Kiner was nearly 5 times better than the the average home run hitter of 1947. • By figuring these out for certain statistics, you can compare players from different eras — or even narrowing down between the AL and the NL. Demonstrating Sabermetrics • In 1928, Hall of Famer Heinie Manush had a slugging percentage of .575. If the slugging percentage of the AL was .397, find his normalized ratio and give an interpretation to this number.

  • The 3-6-3 Double Play
The 3-6-3 Double Play By Christopher Chestnut January 5, 2010 E-mail: [email protected] Purpose The purpose of this study is to determine which major league first baseman turned the most 3-6-3 double plays. Data Sources The information used in this study was obtained free of charge from and is copyrighted by Retrosheet. Interested parties may contact Retrosheet at www.retrosheet.org. Definitions 3-6-3 Double Play – the first baseman fields a ground ball and throws to the shortstop to retire the runner on first. The shortstop returns the throw to the first baseman to retire the batter/runner. Opportunity – all ground balls (including bunts, excluding base hits) fielded by the first baseman with a runner on first (additional runners may be on second and/or third) and less than two outs. Attempt – all opportunities where the first play by the first baseman is a throw to the shortstop. Methodology I used play-by-play data from Retrosheet to support my analysis. The available data includes the American and National Leagues for 1952-2009. I processed the data for each season to generate a list of all players with at least one opportunity in any one of these eight situations: No outs, runner on first No outs, runners on first and second No outs, runners on first and third No outs, bases full One out, runner on first One out, runners on first and second One out, runners on first and third One out, bases full 1 of 7 The 3-6-3 Double Play January 5, 2010 Results Filtering out the non-ground balls and base hits, I found: 1,319 players

  • Great Outing, Even Greater People in Sandy
Whether pitching in Wrigley Field or Dodger Stadium, Sandy Koufax almost always got a fight from the Cubs. (Photos courtesy of the Leo Bauby Collection). Great outing, even greater people in Sandy Koufax perfecto against Chicago Cubs By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Thursday, September 3, 2015 (Second of a two-part series on the 50th anniversary of Sandy Koufax’s perfect game against the Cubs on Sept. 9, 1965 in what may have been the greatest pitching duel in history with Chicago lefty Bob Hendley.) On the surface, the Sandy Koufax perfect game is part of baseball mythology, Koufax’s fastball growing ever faster over the decades, the Cubs’ swings even more futile, the lone run scored even more fluky, the only hit in the game even more shaky. Oral history is the main conduit of its memories, and you know how baseball stories get exaggerated as time progresses. It might as well have taken place in the 19th Century, given how 15 years into the TV era — and with the dramatic expansion of network color telecasts beginning the next week — only three innings of halting home-movie film ex- ists (see accompanying story below). Three network-owned stations and four other inde- pendent VHF stations in Los Angeles, all with regular newscasts, declined to film the game despite the Dodgers’ position in the pennant race. The radio broadcast recordings were cobbled together. www.ChicagoBaseballMuseum.org [email protected] Statistically, the game was the greatest pitching duel Editor's note: in history. Koufax and Hendley took no-hitters into the seventh inning.
