There have been few crises that have affected human health and threatened social and economic progress in quite the way that HIV has. This pandemic has had a devastating impact on many communities. The virus cannot be cured, and greater access to treatment can only be sustained if there is a substantial progress in reducing the rate of HIV infections. Over the years, awareness regarding HIV has grown. People have come to understand what Lady Diana meant when she said, “HIV does not make people dangerous to know, so you can shake their hands and give them a hug: Heaven knows they need it.” However, there are still a lot of hurdles that need to be overcome. We ask some of our well known people from different walks of life, if they think the aversion to people living with HIV has eased in Nepal.

— Mannat Shrestha To a certain level we do see that people have become more at ease. People have become more aware, more educated, but at some levels For a decade we have been made they are still ignorant and often even afraid to live with a person who has aware that people with HIV have HIV. Walk For Autism Nimma Adhikari Kathmandu, 10 December The general mass has become more active in trying to understand different diseases and disorders in the past decade. However, most people are still unaware about Autism, a disorder of neural development. The students of Kathmandu University School of Management (KUSOM) in collaboration with Autism Care Nepal and Patan Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) initiated to spread awareness about this condition on 10 December, World Human Right’s Day, through a walkathon starting from Rotary Club to the KUSOM premises. The event was a pre-Day 1 activity of KUSOM Annual Festival (KAF) 2011 that is to be held from 16 to 18 December. Nir Prakash Giri from Nepal Mental Health Foundation was appointed as the Chief Guest for the event. Guest of Honor, Dr. Sunita Maleku Amatya - Chairperson of Autism Care Nepal spoke at length about the sign and symptoms of Autism. The symptoms of Autism develop in a child before the child is three years old. Some of the most common features of Autism are impaired social interaction and communication, and repetitive behavior. The program was followed by a dance performance by children with learning disabilities from Patan CBR and experience sharing by parents and guardians of autistic children. International Dance Festival 2011 Prabal Man Dhaubadel Kathmandu, 11 December Salsa Dance Academy organized the 2nd International Dance Festival 2011 at Hotel Shangri-la from 9 to 11 December. Following the pre-party at The Factory on 8 December, the dancing fi esta kicked off at 10 in the morning the very next day. The second edition of the International Dance Festival in Nepal featured over 20 international salsa instructors across several dance forms such as salsa, samba, hip- hop, ballet and bollywood. Over 500 dance enthusiasts participated in the three-day workshop. “The International Dance Festival, unlike other dancing events, offers lessons from international professionals and also features rare dance forms such as Kudoro–an African dance, and even belly dancing; which are usually inaccessible in Nepal. By means of events like these, we aim to promote qualitative dance education through international instructors that are very hard to fi nd in Nepal.” said Katia Verreault, organizer of the event. Apart from the dance workshops held during the day, the event featured dance shows, hip hop battles and parties in the evening. The workshop prices ranged from Rs. 1500 to Rs. 4500 depending on the limitation to access and passes to the evening shows with special discounts for students. hallofframe

6 7 8 Kathmandu international mountain Film Festival City Hall, 8 December Inauguration of the 9th edition of KIMFF was held at City Hall, Exhibition Road. KIMFF Director, Ramyata Limbu welcomed select guests, as they poured in to fi ll the auditorium. Then, Bansanta Thapa of Himal Association was lauded with claps and smiles as he frankly complimented the hard work that had gone into making KIMFF a possibility. Thapa explained, because fi lm festivals are grossly underestimated in their social impact potential, funding had been inadequate to support a festival that was growing. This year, KIMFF was hosted in partnership with ECS Media and showcased various selections that focused on socially responsible messages and issues. After receiving the international jury panel, and lighting of the ceremonial lamps, chief guest Mingma Sherpa, gave a brief speech recounting his childhood and what led to his eventual ascent of 14 of the highest peaks in the world. Exemplary of a strong ambition and hard work, Sherpa 9 10 11 referred to the Himalayas as Nepal’s “biggest companies” that can launch our livelihoods and economies to new heights. He then proceeded to cut the ribbons at which point “Buried in Tears”, a documentary by novice director Ashok Thapa, was screened. The movie alluded to International Human Rights Day, which coincided with KIMFF. Named after a song by the Korean rock band Stop Crackdown, the fi lm follows the fi ve band mates as they use music to acknowledge and attack the ill-treatment of migrant workers in South Korea. Both local authority and employers constantly harass the workers because they are not documented. Outside the hall, the lobby featured a photo exhibition featuring rural Nepal, and tents scattered over the grounds housed partners of KIMFF 2011 as well as other satellite programs.

cake mixing at Hotel annapurna 5 Hotel Annapurna, 28 November 6 On 28 November, the kitchen of Hotel Annapurna was fi lled with enthusiasm. With Christmas just around the corner, the hotel held its annual cake mixing ceremony. But what was so special this time? Avik JB Singh, deputy sales and marketing manager of the hotel, said, “More than anything it has been created by the beautiful hands of our beauty queens.” Miss Nepal 2011 Malina Joshi, Miss Nepal 2010 Sadichha Shrestha, along with Miss Nepal Earth 2010 Sahana Vajracharya, and Sarina Miss Nepal International 2011 Maskey participated in the ceremony.

The sweet aroma of the mixture of rich ingredients fi lled the entire kitchen, as the beauties along with the staff plunged their hands and got busy with the mixing process. After assorting all the ingredients like dry fruits and spices the mixture was poured into a pot. The mixture is to be kept aside for at least 2-3 weeks before processing it further. 1. Pranab Singh introduced both Balasubramanyam and Siwakoti after which Siwakoti went forth in conversation. Siwakoti questioned Balasubramanyam on how and why he decided to be so radical. Balasubramanyam pointed it out as the self destructive component in his personality. He then explained how the phenomenon goes back to 4 5 his childhood–being bullied by the whites while the British society dealt with racism by acting like it was not there. “Somebody has to be a loud- mouthed lunatic in the family” opined Balasubramanyam. He explained how there is no discourse on race in Britain and how publishers were scared to approach a taboo subject. “I doubted if it was a legitimate subject for literature” said Balasubramanyam on his second novel, “The Dreamer”. He pointed out the psychological effect of racism and how black and brown children start hating themselves at an early age. He talked about his short stories–”India Isn’t There” and “The Story”– after which he read excerpts from his much acclaimed short story, “The Day George Bush (Sr.) Came to Use the Bathroom”, and answered questions from the fl oor. 1. Dream of The White lotus Manny’s Eatery and Tapas Bar, 3 December An artist always desires to look for the extraordinary in ordinary things; 4 5 6 they have a tendency to always leave a slight touch of mystery in their paintings. That is what Chirag Bangdel’s 17th Solo Exhibition “Dream of the White Lotus” had to offer. On 3 December the visual artist refl ected the beauty of purity in his exhibition. The show, which was held at the premises of Shangrila Complex, was inaugurated by Senior Biomedical Research Scientist, Dr. Sameer Mani Dixit. Bangel shared that he creates for the sheer joy of creating. “The White Lotus signifi es a lot of things for me. It signifi es purity. It also denotes my quest for spirituality. It also denotes the dream of all to attain moksha or salvation”, he said. His paintings are fi gurative where acrylic has been used as the medium on paper and canvas . The bright hues were exhibited on canvas, while he has experimented, quite subtly, with texture on paper. The exhibition runs through 16 December. 1. Prof. Dina Bangdel 2. Bina Bangdel 3.
