  • Chapter 1. Migration Snapshot of the City of Barcelona
    1. MIGRATION SNAPSHOT OF THE CITY OF BARCELONA 27 │ Chapter 1. Migration Snapshot of the city of Barcelona Barcelona (Ajuntament de Barcelona) is the second most populated city in Spain with more than 1 620 809 inhabitants. It is the most populated city of the region (Autonomous Community of Catalonia) which includes 7.5 million people. There are provinces within the Autonomous Communities (4 provinces in Catalonia, for example) and the city of Barcelona is part of the province of Barcelona (TL3) and is at the heart of a metropolitan area of 3.2 million residents. In the City there are ten municipal districts - the most granular territorial and administrative unity - and 73 neighbourhoods in the metropolitan area. In 2018, relevant competences for migrant integration are the remit of central, regional and local governments whereas provincial and metropolitan bodies do not have competences in terms of migrant integration and do not implement policies pertaining to it. Yet, the provincial level remains used for statistical purposes. Migration insights in the city of Barcelona: flows, populations and legislation A territorial approach to migration: Barcelona as a migration hub in Spain As an industrial city and a Mediterranean port, Barcelona has traditionally been a migrant destination. Contemporary Barcelona is the result of two key inflows of newcomers, the first resulting from internal mobility at the country level and the second from international migration. The first one followed the Spanish Civil War and post-war period. In the 1950s and 1960s, Barcelona’s industrial economy attracted large inflows of low-skilled workers from the south and west of Spain, which contributed to the city’s economic growth.

  • Accuracy of Environmental Monitoring in China: Exploring the Influence of Institutional, Political and Ideological Factors
sustainability Article Accuracy of Environmental Monitoring in China: Exploring the Influence of Institutional, Political and Ideological Factors Daniele Brombal Department of Asian and North African Studies, University Ca’ Foscari Venice, 30123 Venice, Italy; [email protected]; Tel.: +39-041-234-9585 Academic Editor: Marc A. Rosen Received: 21 March 2016; Accepted: 5 December 2016; Published: 23 February 2017 Abstract: Environmental monitoring data are essential to informing decision-making processes relevant to the management of the environment. Their accuracy is therefore of extreme importance. The credibility of Chinese environmental data has been long questioned by domestic and foreign observers. This paper explores the potential impact of institutional, political, and ideological factors on the accuracy of China’s environmental monitoring data. It contends that the bureaucratic incentive system, conflicting agency goals, particular interests, and ideological structures constitute potential sources of bias in processes of environmental monitoring in China. The current leadership has acknowledged the issue, implementing new measures to strengthen administrative coordination and reinforce the oversight of the central government over local authorities. However, the failure to address the deeper political roots of the problem and the ambivalence over the desirability of public participation to enhance transparency might jeopardize Beijing’s strive for environmental data accuracy. Keywords: China; environmental monitoring; accuracy; decision making; institutions; politics; ideology All the questions had received splendidly drafted answers: answers not open to doubt, since they were not the result of human thoughts (always liable to error), but were the outcome of official labours. Lev Tolstoj, 1877 [1] 1. Introduction Environmental monitoring aims to produce evidence that reveals the state of the environment based on continuous, long-term measurements of physical, chemical, and biological variables [2,3].

  • Accuracy Opens an Office in Singapore
Accuracy opens an office in Singapore Neuilly‐sur‐Seine, 7 April 2016 Accuracy opens an office in Singapore widening the international presence of the firm, following recent openings in India and Canada. This new office is managed locally by David Thornes and Jonathan Ellis, who are putting together a team of nearly ten people, and is closely related to the Delhi office, and in particular with Chaitanya Arora, a partner in the Delhi office, who is a Singaporean citizen. With its opening in Singapore, the main business center of Southeast Asia, Accuracy will be able to service the region from this business hub. The opening is a natural evolution for Accuracy, with synergies with both the London and Delhi offices and many interactions between Europe, North America and Asia. Clients of the various Accuracy offices (notably international listed companies) are very active in this region and, as such, there is a requirement for locally based support. Furthermore, Singapore is the hub of international arbitration in Asia – a field which constitutes one of the main axes of Accuracy’s development, where they are one of the world leaders in terms of independent expertise in matters relating to M&A transactions, investments or construction projects. Following the strategy that saw Accuracy successfully open a number of foreign offices (eight in Europe and now three outside of Europe since its foundation in 2004), the Singapore team will first focus on supporting its international clients and providing independent expertise in arbitration cases, before gradually expanding its offering to include all of Accuracy’s services.
