Meandering down from the heights of Weston Peak (13,572’), Ptarmigan Peak (13,739’) and numerous other towering pinnacles a host of high mountains streams and creeks converge to ultimately form the South Fork of the South Platte, which gets its start earnest on the DM Ranch. The resulting bug life from these multiple water sources is nothing short of incredible. With approximately 2 ½ miles of the South Fork of the South Platte, and 1/5 mile of Twelvemile Creek the ranch the resident population of hearty browns is well fed from a veritable buffet of aquatic insects and terrestrials. The stream composition Live Water on the ranch is classic MULTIPLE SOURCES structure featuring long OF WATER PROVE FOR undercut banks, gravel- bottom riffles and deep GREAT FISHING holding water near a series of beaver dams. In order to further improve habitat in the form of deeper holding water current ownership is working with a team of fishery consultants and biologists to create a series of beaver mimicry structures to encourage natural dam development. Ahead of the design work for these structures a thorough assessment of the bug life and fish populations was carried out as a baseline for the work. The results of these studies read like a book on popular fly patterns – every major class of bugs was represented in healthy abundance from caddisflies to mayflies and stoneflies, all in a variety of types, sizes and colors. This doesn’t even take into account the abundance of hoppers, ant and beetles; seen trout feast on at the DM Ranch. Livewater (Cont’d) An electrofishing survey was also completed in conjunction with the analysis and design work; suffice to say, that the fishery health on the DM Ranch is excellent and continuing to improve. A variety of age classes were represented throughout the system with the resident pig being a wild brown trout that measured at 27.5”. To quote the 2018 report, “The existing trout food supply is excellent, with abundant suckers and diverse aquatic macroinvertebrate populations to sustain all trout size classes. The aquatic insects suggest that this is a well oxygenated stream with a more than adequate biomass to support healthy trout populations.” Scientific studies aside, it’s hard to beat catching wild trout on a variety of flies all while being surrounded by the grand splendor of the Colorado high country, and most likely a few deer and elk.
