The financial support we receive provides the resources to continue. It’s an amazing combination and a special time to be a part of the Inglis Community. An historic organization, with the mindset of a startup — that describes Inglis as we celebrate our 140th birthday this year. The way we refer to people with disabilities has changed over the years; so has our approach to care. Our Person-Centered Care model is making Inglis House a place that residents can call home. Today’s six, newly renovated neighborhoods are colorful and welcoming — so different from the institutional atmosphere of the past. Inglis’ ongoing investments in affordable, wheelchair-accessible housing, smart home technology and community support services help hundreds of people with disabilities to thrive in communities. Our Adapted Technology Program enables them to complete their degrees and connect with family and friends. Thanks to funding from The Pew Charitable Trusts, we are able to bring adapted technology to people with disabilities across the Delaware Valley. While major government funding cuts loom, Inglis continues to advance new ideas and alternatives. We help people with disabilities redefine independence and ability every day. Although we can’t reverse disease or undo permanent injury, we can remove barriers and help people live as independently as possible — defined by who they are as individuals, not We help people with by their disabilities. disabilities redefine Today’s consumers benefit from those who fought for accessible schools, sidewalks and independence and transportation. Our hospital-like environment was converted to one that looks more like home. We silenced noisy call bells, reduced overhead 1NORTH paging, softened the lighting, and eliminated fixed bathing and dining schedules, among many other changes. Today, the former “nursing units” have become six neighbor- hoods. Visitors to each neighborhood are greeted by a custom, hand-painted mural, depicting a theme chosen by residents and staff. All living areas boast new furniture, flooring, molding and an attractive new color scheme, also selected by those who live and work in the neighborhoods. The newly renovated dining solariums, equipped with full kitchens and pantries, are spacious and brightly lit with panoramic views of the outdoors. Here, breakfast is made to order. If nothing on the lunch or dinner menu is appealing, residents can choose from a variety of alternatives made on the spot by a neighborhood homemaker. Hallways have attractive new floor coverings and colorful walls are lined with “memory boxes” that tell the stories of residents living there. The traditional nursing stations have been replaced with more welcoming, accessible areas. As attractive as the new surroundings are, Person-Centered Care at Inglis goes much deeper. Residents, staff and family members attend Person First education sessions, where they explore the model’s values, learn improved ways of communicating and share what “creating a home” at Inglis means to them. Residents and staff on our 3North Neighborhood show their gratitude for their beautifully renovated living spaces. Person-Centered Care would not be a reality at Inglis with- out our many generous donors. We thank them for their extraordinary commitment to improving the quality of life for our residents. • Headline of the Month: Headline of the Month
Headline of the Month: Legislators and Voters Alike Prepare For Midterm Elections This November By Sal DiMaggio It’s November and you know what that means. Midterms! No, no, not the tests. Don’t worry, those aren’t until January. But the midterm elections are important, and here’s why: The midterm elections are held every four years, right in the middle of a presidential term. Every member of the U.S. House of Representatives is up for reelection, as their terms are two years each, as well as 35 Senators, whose terms are six years. Some states also have their elections for governors during the midterms. Currently, the Republicans (R; GOP) have a 235-193 lead in the House, as well as a slight majority in the Senate, 51-49. They are hoping that they can keep this majority for the next two years. The Democrats (D), on the other hand, are looking to topple this control. These are the outcomes of both of those results: If the Republicans remain in power, Congress will most likely still be able to work with President Trump, who is also a Republican. This will result in many things on the Republican agenda to be accomplished. The Republicans aim to crack down on illegal immigration and to lower taxes in the next few years to come. Along with this, they plan to protect gun rights and denuclearize the Korean Peninsula. If the Democrats gain control, Congress and the president will often clash, as they will disagree on most issues, and few of the things on Trump’s to-do list will get done.

The Hot Chicks of Rock The adrenaline rush of Super Bowl week has started to kick in and it is starting to feel like I’m on a Benzedrine overload. Late night and early morning spent reading the re-writes of the previous days blurbs that all blend together to the point that the only thing I remember is something in I read stating that Bill Belichick will murder Tom Coughlin. Whatever your feelings are on football, it is still a great excuse to throw a party. As far as Super Bowl Parties go, it is tough to top the PVD Social Club’s bill of a matinee punk rock headlined by iconic stalwarts of loud hard and fast, the Hudson Falcons and Boston’s The Ducky Boys (Record Release Party for Chasing the Ghost). The bill is also features Pinkerton Thugs, Drunk Robb and The Shots, and Reason to Fight. The show is all ages and will not interfere with watching the game because it starts at 2PM– so if you are like me, set an alarm, or two. Not only is this the perfect way to release some pre-show aggression but you can stay or come for the game, which will be shown on huge projection screens throughout the entire club. At halftime, there will be a burlesque show so you have something more enticing than watching a washed up Madonna and there will be complementary appetizers served. Seriously, Madonna playing the Super Bowl, what diehard football fan wants to see that? Speaking of burlesque, with Valentine’s Day around that corner, it is time for our 5th annual Hot Women in Local Rock to celebrate this special day, well for single males and women in relationships.

Outside: The Creation of a Liminoid Space as a Metaphor for Pre-Millennial Society Author: Nicholas P. Greco, B.A. (University of Ottawa) Supervisor: Dr Susan Fast Number of Pages: xi, 166. 111 ABSTRACT The majority of writings on David Bowie have focussed on his early work. Many feel that Bowie's early work has much merit, as has been made clear by the vast pool of both academic and popular writings regarding his work in the early 1970s, his collaborations with Brian Eno in the late 1970s, and his most commercially accepted works in the early 1980s. However, much of the academic writing on Bowie has chosen to focus only on these works and ignores his more recent material. This thesis contributes to the body of knowledge regarding the more recent work of David Bowie. In 1995, Bowie released the album 1. Outside. Through its music and lyrics, album art, accompanying narrative, music video and live performance, Bowie presents a world of the absurd and violent. He engages with the notions of murder as art, body modification as ritual, and the state of society at the end of the twentieth century.
