North Hobart Football Club Newsletter October 15, 2019 North Hobart Football Club Newsletter October 15, 2019 Work’s moving quickly on the Hill Things are really taking shape with our redevelopment on the Rydges Hotel Wing part of the ground. The structure of the new kiosk, cool room, wet area and bar serving area is well advanced along with the new AFL-compliant coaches and media box. It’s all scheduled to be finished by the end of November. When it’s finished The Hill will be the best place in Tasmania to watch the footy. Work’s well underway on the Hill 1 ‘Cunna’s’ coming home! Gun midfielder Troy Cunliffe, pictured below with Senior Coach Richard Robinson, is coming home to North Hobart after signing a two-year deal. Troy is 27 and gives us another valuable, mature, strong-bodied midfielder. A favourite son of North Hobart, Troy started his junior career with Sam Darley at North, and they went through all the junior ranks to senior footy together. Troy is North Hobart Senior player number 894 since 1945 and made his senior debut in round 1 2010 against Hobart at the TCA. Troy says he excited about coming home and playing with his mate Sam Darley again. “I can’t wait to play at North Hobart with Sam Darley again and help the club continue to improve. “These are exciting times at North Hobart with a quickly developing young group and I can’t wait to be part of it”. Troy has starred for Lindisfarne in the SFL winning back to back SFL William Leitch medals for the competition’s best and fairest in 2016 and 17. He had a year at Clarence in 2018 before returning to Lindisfarne to play a big role in them winning the flag this year. We’re thrilled to have Cunna come home and can’t wait for next year. Ben Van Kraanen appointed as Development League Coach We’re also delighted to announce that Ben Van Kraanen is on board as our Development League coach for at least the next two years. Ben is a Level 2 accredited coach and has had extensive experience in coaching both juniors and men. He has a strong teaching and nurturing approach and will ensure that our young talent is developed into good senior footballers. 2 Last year Ben coached the Lindisfarne Reserves to the flag and this year into the Grand Final. He also has been an assistant coach with the seniors for the past two years in which they won back to back flags. And Ben, like Troy Cunliffe, is another North Hobart boy who has come home, after playing a lot of footy with us. Ben is North Hobart senior player number 856, in 2006. Ben will also bring an assistant coach Anthony Bosworth with him, who, like Ben, has had extensive coaching experience. Ben and Anthony will play an enormously important role at the club and continue the great work that Jim Ransom and Ray ‘Boris’ Becker have done. Jim will be part of the coaching team for our inaugural Tasmanian Under 18 girls Devils team and recently was in Melbourne doing his level 3 coaching course. ‘Boris’ will be taking a break from coaching and we expect to see him cheering on the Dees with a cold one or two in the new wet area. Many thanks and well done to Jim and Boris and best wishes for the future. New Development League Coach Ben Van Kraanen and Senior Coach Richard ‘Bear’ Robinson 3 Simon Harris to coach North Hobart’s Under 18s The North Hobart Football Club and the North Hobart Junior Football Club are delighted to announce that Simon Harris will coach the North Hobart Under 18s for at least the next two years. Simon coached the North Hobart under 16s to the grand final this year and has extensive experience coaching at junior and senior level. A Level 1 coach, Simon is keen to do his Level 2 course soon and having him on board provides continuity for the boys who played in this year’s Under 16s team. “I am really looking forward to the opportunity to continue with the transition of this group moving forward into Under 18’s football”, he said. “Coaching is based on communication and knowing your players, understanding an individual, and being approachable and positive to establish great working relationships. “I can’t wait to get started.” Simon will be joined by his assistant Cameron Brown who is a vice-principal at Sacred Heart College. Simon’s coaching experience • North Hobart under 16.5 Coach 2019 • North Hobart U14s Coach 2018 • North Hobart U13’s Assistant Coach 2017 • Chairman of selectors / coach, DOSA Football Club 2016 • Football Director / Premiership Coach, DOSA Football Club 2015,2014 • Senior Coach, Sorell Football Club 2013 • Reserves Coach / Senior Assistant Coach, Sorell Football Club 2012,2011 • Senior Assistant Coach, DOSA Football Coach 2010,2009,2008 • Reserves Coach, DOSA Football Club 2007,2006 Huge thanks and well done to Ricky McCulloch for the great job he did coaching the Under 18s this season with Jacob Howard it’s very much appreciated. 4 Many thanks and well done to Greg Our women’s team coach Greg Grubb resigned recently after four years in the role. During that time, Greg put an enormous amount of hard work, passion and commitment into the role taking the team to the Grand Final in 2018. He has been a pioneer of women’s footy at North Hobart and the club is enormously grateful for the role he’s played and his great contribution. We wish him every success in the future. The position of Head Coach of our Women’s team has been advertised and applications close on October 25. All the award winners from our Awards Night Friday 4 October Our end of season awards evening was a great success with over 130 people jammed into our social rooms for the big night. Huge thanks and well done to Shelley Collins for organising the evening, Aaron Vince for doing the brilliant audio-visual presentations, Jacqui Collins for being our MC and Shelley’s daughter Phebe for helping out too. Sam Darley capped off a stellar year by winning the George Miller Medal for Senior Best and Fairest polling an extraordinary 171 votes. Last year’s winner Nathan McCulloch had another terrific year finishing runner-up on 92 votes with Jayden Charlton third on 81. Our Development League Keith Bradshaw Medal was won by Hamish Barron finishing ahead of runner-up Chris Ransom. Both these boys also played some good senior footy during the year. Our Ladies Team Rosemary Richardson Medal was won by Krystle Gibbs who had a magnificent season that also saw her play representative footy and our runner up was Nikki Shelverton, who won last year’s best and fairest. 5 Best and fairests and runners-up for 2019 6 7 8 All the trophy winners for 2019 9 AW ‘Mickey’ Budd Seniors Rising Star Award The club has named the Senior’s Rising Star Award in honour of Arthur ‘Mickey’ Budd a young North Hobart footballer who, only a matter of days after playing his first senior game against Cananore as an 18-year-old in 1939, tragically died of pneumonia. It’s a very poignant story and shows the great family connections that North Hobart has over many generations. Arthur lived with his parents Harry and Doris at 93 Letitia street North Hobart. Arthur’s father was the boot-studder at North Hobart for 40 years. Arthur is a relative of senior player Sam Caswell and the award was presented to this year’s winner, Angus Norton, by Sam’s grandfather John Budd who is Arthur ‘Mickey’ Budd’s father’s cousin. Sadly, these days of course Arthur would have been cured with a simple course of antibiotics. Arthur’s photo and the plaque that goes with it have been kindly donated to the club by John Budd and will hang on the wall in our social rooms. John Budd, Sam Caswell’s grandfather, presented the AW ‘Mickey’ Budd seniors Rising Star Award to Angus Norton. 10 Arthur ‘Mickey’ Budd The photo and plaque will hang in our social rooms. 11 Big thanks to our partners and sponsors Harvey Norman (Major Partner) Hobart, Moonah, Kingston and Cambridge stores Members - Don’t forget your discount card! www.harveynorman.com.au Work and Training www.workandtraining.com.au 12 Harcourts Signature Back in Motion Physiotherapy www.signature.harcourts.com.au www.backinmotion.com.au Tasmanian Bakeries Hobart City Council www.tasmanianbakeries.com.au www.hobartcity.com.au The Waggon and Horses Hotel Chemist Warehouse 327 Argyle St, North Hobart TAS 7000 www.chemistwarehouse.com.au Phone: (03) 6234 8888 13 Devine Property Bennetts Petroleum www.devineproperty.com.au www.bennettspetrol.com.au Triple M Typeface www.triplem.com.au/hobart www.typeface.com.au Les Lees www.leslees.com.au 14 .

Media Release Attention: Sports Editors, Football Writers and Broadcasters Date: Tuesday, 18 May 2010 Subject: Great Club for 2010 announced – Hobart / Cananore to be recognized. EMBARGOED UNTIL – 11am TODAY AFL Tasmania board member, Scott Wade, has announced today at TCA Ground (Hobart) that the great Club selected for induction into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame in 2010 is the Hobart and Cananore Football Clubs. Football in the city of Hobart has its origins in the early 1840s, but became formalised in the latter half of the 19 th century when Clubs first started to emerge. The Club that was to become what is known as Hobart today has arguably enjoyed the most colourful history of any Club in Tasmania. Prior to World War Two the dominant Club in Tasmanian football was ‘Cananore’ which is indisputably the Club we now know as Hobart. Both Clubs have shared the same colours, ground and players. While we know the origins of the name Hobart are founded on the desire of the TFL to have district football after WW2, the origins of the name Cananore are far more exotic. Cannanore was the British name of a district in India in the 19 th century which is now called by the Hindi ‘Kannur’. The district was an important port on the Arabian Sea and the British military headquarters on India's west coast until 1887. Legend has it that one of the founders of the Cananore Football Club in Hobart in the early 1900s chose the name as they had been based there in earlier years and had brought home a incorrectly spelt name plaque which adorned the entry to a building at which many supporters of the new Club met.

Coincidentally, I joined AFL Tasmania as a Director at virtually the same time Andrew became Chief Executive and during my seven years as Chairman of AFL Tasmania our team has worked very closely with Andrew, Gillon McLachlan and other members of the AFL executive management team. The facts speak for themselves; Andrew Demetriou has been an outstanding national leader of our game and in my opinion he has also provided exceptional support and advice to Tasmanian football through AFL Tasmania. The first time I met with Andrew he was very clear about the fact that the AFL must prioritise its development activities in Queensland and New South Wales. The growth of the game in these two northern states will ultimately be to the benefit of a traditional football state such as Tasmania.

A J Donnelly senior, a well-known Burnie identity, took an active interest in sporting activities, community affairs and the history of the North West Coast of Tasmania. His History of the Burnie Athletic Club: 75th birthday souvenir was published in 1962. Like his father, a linotype operator with The Advocate newspaper, young Jack spent his working career with newspapers. For 35 years he worked successively as a senior sports reporter, sub- editor and by 1966 sporting editor with The Examiner in Launceston. His coverage of sporting events included the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, numerous intrastate and interstate football matches (many under the by-line 'Half-Back'), Tours of the North cycling events, Kings Cup rowing contests and other sporting activities. Jack's encyclopaedic knowledge of football, particularly in Tasmania, reflected his great love for the game. In his youth, he played with Burnie, Cooee, APPM, and Launceston, and his Football Guide was published in 1947.

  • Seagulls on the Wing
PART II Seagulls on the wing W. T. (Bill) WILLIAMS 1945-66 BRIAN LEWIS 1967-97 FOREWORD IN THE FOLLOWING PAGES an effort has been made to collate the records of the Sandy Bay Football Club from its inception, and renew acquaintances with all the great players who have worn the Club’s Blue and White Guernsey. Months of research have resulted in the compilation of this comprehensive record, and if perchance some name or names or facts have been omitted the writers offers their apologies. During the years of the Second World War and particularly 1942-43 seeds were sown for the introduction of district football in Hobart and sub- urbs. Many were sceptical of the success, but it was obvious that now was the time to implement the scheme if district football was to succeed. The big barrier was the breaking of old club ties, but with the suspension of League football during the war years and the retirement of most of the pre- war champions the powers that be decided in favour of the new scheme. In 1945 we saw four district Clubs provide the football namely Sandy Bay, North Hobart, New Town and Hobart. In 1947 Clarence and New Norfolk were admitted to the competition. The teams remained unchanged until 1986 when East and North Launceston were admitted. In 1987 the Burnie Hawks and the Devonport Blues were also admitted to form a Statewide League. The number of teams remained the same until the 1994 season when Launceston was admitted, thus creating a bye. No further change occurred until 1997 when all teams handed in their licenses and unfortu- nately the rest is history.

It seems like only yesterday that we conducted our Tasmanian Team of the Century dinner in 2004, followed by our inaugural Hall of Fame induction dinner in 2005. This is just another example of how quickly a decade passes by when you work in an industry as dynamic as Australian Football. Over this decade 277 individuals have entered our Hall of Fame ‘club’ as inductees. We have elevated 40 of these men to Legend status and further elevated just 14 to become Icons of Tasmanian Football. To be one of just 14 Icons to have been identified in over 149 years of the game being played in Tasmania is very special indeed.

PUBLIC THE STANDING COMMITTEE OF PUBLIC ACCOUNTS MET IN COMMITTEE ROOM 2, PARLIAMENT HOUSE, HOBART, ON MONDAY 21 OCTOBER 2013. FOOTBALL INQUIRY Mr MICHAEL HOLMES WAS CALLED, MADE THE STATUTORY DECLARATION AND WAS EXAMINED. CHAIR (Mr Dean) - Welcome. Before we commence there are a couple of things I need to say. This is a public hearing, it is being recorded on Hansard, and in this environment you have parliamentary privilege but outside here you have no parliamentary privilege so anything you say out there is from you. If we get to any stage during your evidence that you would like it to be taken in camera then please make that known to the committee and we will make a determination on where we should go with that if it should reach that stage. You have seen the terms of reference which are reasonably clear albeit there is a catch- all one at the end but it is fairly clear and it relates to the funding the state government provides to AFL Tasmania and how that is expended throughout the state and how the clubs benefits from it and what they are getting out of it, et cetera. You have made a submission, Michael, and we have read that so I will leave it open to you and if there are expansions you want to make or emphasises you want to place or any additional information you might have I will leave that to you at this stage and then we will ask questions. We have Kim Booth - Mr BOOTH - Hello, Michael.

Free online at www.kingboroughchronicle.com.au FREE! AT THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY ISSUE No. 588 5/32 Channel Highway, Kingston. 7050 • Ph: 6229 3655 • Email [email protected] TUESDAY, 13 JULY 2021 Huntingfield roundabout approved Kingborough Council, in its role as a planning authority, has approved a Development Application for a new roundabout on the Channel Highway, Huntingfield with an amended condition at the most recent council meeting. Acting Mayor of Kingborough, Cr Jo Westwood said the purpose of the roundabout is to provide access to the proposed Huntingfield housing estate. “Council approved the Development Application for the roundabout with an additional condition that a northbound slip lane be included,” Acting Mayor Westwood said. Acting Mayor Jo Westwood acknowledged the widespread community unease about the roundabout in the lead up to the council meeting on Monday, July 5. “It was clear there was significant community angst about the design of the roundabout and the impact it would have on residents travelling up from the Channel,” Acting Mayor Westwood said. “Although the original Development Application met the requirements of the planning scheme, the inclusion of a northbound slip lane was considered necessary to avoid potential traffic issues. “Traffic on Kingborough’s roads is increasing rapidly and our road network needs to keep ahead of this. “It is important that new road infrastructure is built with future growth in mind,” Acting Mayor Westwood said. Former Mayor of Kingborough and Member for Franklin, Dean Winter MP commented on the approval of the Huntingfield roundabout. “First, I’d like to acknowledge Kingborough Councillors for their innovative response to a flawed application by the Liberal Government.

While grand final day is always a special event for the participating clubs and their respective competitions, for AFL Tasmania our Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame is especially dear to our hearts because it is the only time during the year whereby we can pause for a brief moment and celebrate the past. In addition, we cherish the uniqueness of our Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame, which remains the only football event in the nation that enshrines great contributions from individuals, clubs, teams and games on a truly whole of state basis. We also recognise the special and distinctive elements of our great game in Tasmania such as the gravel oval in Queenstown and the King Island Football Association, to mention just two.

Many believe him to be the greatest Tasmanian player not to have played in the VFL/AFL, and that’s borne out by him being named Vice-Captain to Darrel Baldock in Tasmania’s team of the century, announced in 2004. John is revered, loved, and respected by everyone who knew him. An extraordinarily gifted left footer, in his playing days the great JL was one of the finest players in the country and unbeatable.
