The events were part of a joint 2018-19 research project called Song lines on the road – Life lines on the move! (On the Road for short) that sought to share two independent strands of longitudinal, co-produced, arts-based research in which we have developed approaches aimed at amplifying how living knowledge flows on in communities even when the shocks and intensities of lived experience defy articulation and representation. -

The following analysis examines the Jewish tattoo narrativespresented in the first American television program about tattooing, Miami Ink. Keywords: Jewish, tattoo, television, stigma, narrative paradigm © Online Journal of Communication and Media Technologies 146 Online Journal of Communication and Media Technologies Volume: 7 – Issue: 3 July - 2017 The TLC network reality series, Miami Ink, follows four tattoo artists and the clientele they tattoo in South Beach, Florida. Miami Ink is the first American reality television series about a tattoo parlor, and the first show completely devoted to tattoos (Hibberd, 2005; Oldenburg, 2005). Miami Inkoriginally ran from 2005 to 2008 (Saraiya, 2014). The show continues to air in syndication worldwide in over 160 countries (Tattoodo, 2015, 2014; Thobo-Carlsen & Chateaubriand, 2014). Relevance for Studying the Topic Research into the growing popularity of tattoos in America has attributed this rise of acceptance to open communication from the tattoo industry and positive media exposure of tattoos (DeMello, 2000; Wyatt, 2003; Yamada, 2009). With these media influences helping advance the popularity of tattoos, it is then relevant to look closely at the first television show dedicated specifically to tattooing. This analysis will examine the Jewish tattoo themes presented in the show and what they accomplish in terms of meaning. -

Some of the glass is formed into colorful bottles reminiscent of those in the southern supernatural tradition of bottle trees, a custom depicted in movies such as Ray (2004), a biopic about African American musician Ray Charles, or Because of Winn-Dixie (2005), a children’s fi lm about a beloved dog. The famous southern writer Eudora Welty photographed them. A contemporary southern author, Dennis Covington, describes them: “If you happen to have evil spirits, you put bottles on the branches of a [bare] tree in your yard. The more colorful the glass, the better, I suppose. The evil spirits get trapped in the bottles and won’t do you any harm. This is what Southerners in the country do with evil spirits” (1995, xv). Bottle trees are a product of southern African American cul- ture. Jim Martin says that glassblowing and bottle making existed as early as the ninth century in Africa. The practice of hanging objects from trees to ward off evil spirits is also African, and the bottle tree itself is Kongo-derived. -

intersections online Volume 11, Number 1 (Summer 2010) Matthew Hayes, “This is My Tattoo,” intersections 11, no. 1 (2010): 127-163. ABSTRACT What does it mean to own a tattoo? How does the tension between running a business and creating art affect the experience of producing and receiving a tattoo? This project consists of two parts: a written paper and a short documentary film. Based on original research, I explore what ownership means to tattoo artists and tattooed persons, and how this idea of ownership may or may not change when a tattoo is transmitted to film. Several participants conclude that the person who wears the tattoo ultimately owns the tattoo, while others believe all those involved in the experience have a stake in the ownership of their tattoo. While my conclusions are decidedly incomplete, partly a result of the originality of this work, I nevertheless draw attention to the significance of this tension to the way one looks at his or her tattoo after it is completed. While it was not my first, the tattoo that I was waiting to have applied on my skin was my largest to date, and it was going straight on my ribs, one of the most painful areas of the body to have tattooed (or so they say).
