Don Pasquale, Gaetano Doni zetti 's forty-third opera, opened to enthu­ siastic audiences on January 3, 1843. Soon after its premiere, this opera buffa became an international success and has never left the operatic repertory. C.bL Today, Don Pasquale continues to e nj oy a reputati on as one of the best­ known Italian Romantic Comedies. The plot revolves around the title character, an aging bachelor that has finally fo und the woman he wishes to marry. The only problem is, she is in love with his young nephew. Will Don Pasquale get hi s bride? Doni zetti 's opera buffa provides the answer and a lot of laughs A .. along the way. -b- ~ (q I, f-\VYI 1ence.. I Synopsis &; ~ 4-:J- d . o v er+v f\.Q.__ Act One 3Lf ~ ~D 3 ' At* j'_ The wealthy Don Pasquale, until now a confi rmed bachelor, has decided to marry. He is, however, furious with his nephew Ernesto for wanting to do the same. Ernesto, who is madly in love with the winsome widow, Norina, is in a pani c about this as is his prospecti ve bride. Don Pasquale is impatiently await­ ing the a1Tival of his friend Dr. Malatesta, who he hopes will help him with his plans. Malatesta arrives, and unable to dissuade Don Pasquale from his mar­ ri age plans and convince him to let Ernesto marry hi s true love, he pretends to go along. He proposes that his "sister" should be the bride, as Don Pasquale has no one in particul ar in mi nd. He describes the future bride as a na'Jve, shy and timid girl , brought up in a convent. In reality, she is Norina, who is not related to Dr. Malatesta but who together with him has come up with a plan to force Don Pasquale to abandon his plan so she and Ernesto can be married. Don Pasquale is unable to resist Malatesta's descri pti on of hi s future bride, and eagerly agrees to the marriage. 30 Summer Music Festival 2003 As Malatesta leaves to continue his conspiracy, Ernesto enters. Don Pasquale announces his marriage plans. Incredulous at first, Ernesto fi nall y reali zes that this ends his hopes for a future. When he learns that his uncle has already consulted with Dr. Malatesta, Ernesto's last hopes for happiness van­ ish. The scene changes to Norina's apartment where she is reading. Dr. Malatesta arrives and tells her the Don Pasquale has fall en for the scheme whi ch shall finally make him agree to his nephew's marriage. Norina is not all that convinced this plan is good. In the meantime, no one has explained this to Ernesto. CDI T\ £/;1.'~5 CJ)IL r:;r:;:;;;'eAce Intermission 0 : ~ (p ;2. ,4c_.f ..I£. Act Two .jt:¥-1 Act II opens in Ernesto's lodgings. He is in despair at the prospect of losing his bride and hi s home, for Don Pasquale has thrown him out of the ho use. T he scene changes to Don Pasquale's home, where he receives his prospecti ve bride and her sponsor, his fri end, Dr. Malatesta. She behaves as promised, shy, retiring, indicating that she is onl y interested in things of the household. Dr. Malatesta is enraptured with hi s prospecti ve bride and sends for a notary (Malatesta's nephew, Carlotta). A witness is still missing. At this moment Ernesto ru shes in proclaiming that he has been betrayed. Dr. Malatesta has his work cut out for him to explain the situation to him, without letting Don Pasquale know Norina's true identity. After explaining the plan to Ernesto he readily consents to be the witness. The moment the contract is signed a transformati on occurs. The timid, shy, convent bred Norina turns into a shrew. Nothing Don Pasquale says is ri ght and she begins to spend hi s money with abando n as Don Pasquale watches in horror. He proclaims himself betrayed as the act concludes. Intermission 3 . Ac..+ J]L. Act Three 3~;l{b Servants are running back and forth executing Norina's orders. She ap­ pears expensively dressed and ready to go to the theater without her husband. They quarrel and Norina boxes her husband's ears. As Norina leaves, she "accidentally" drops a note, purportedly from Ernesto, making an assignation for that very evening in the garden. Don Pasquale reads it and sees it as his chance of getting out of this hateful marriage. Malatesta arri ves and Don Pasquale pours hi s heart out to him. Ma latesta pretends to conspire with the old man, to get him out of this marri age. The scene changes to the garden where Ernesto sings a beautiful ser­ enade to Norina. Don Pasquale and Malatesta surprise the lovers. E rn esto escapes, but Norina stays to face the music. Malatesta twists everything round to everyone's sati sfacti on and soon E rnesto and Norina are waiting to be married, and with the full approval of Don Pasquale who considers hi mself lucky to be out of that marriage ordeal!     LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR An in-depth guide by Stu Lewis INTRODUCTION In Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary (1857), Western literature’s prototypical “Desperate Housewives” narrative, Charles and Emma Bovary travel to Rouen to attend the opera, and they attend a performance of Lucia di Lammermoor. Perhaps Flaubert chose this opera because it would appeal to Emma’s romantic nature, suggesting parallels between her life and that of the heroine: both women forced into unhappy marriages. But the reason could have been simpler—that given the popularity of this opera, someone who dropped in at the opera house on a given night would be likely to see Lucia. If there is one work that could be said to represent opera with a capital O, it is Lucia di Lammermoor. Lucia is a story of forbidden love, deceit, treachery, violence, family hatred, and suicide, culminating in the mother of all mad scenes. It features a heroic yet tragic tenor, villainous baritones and basses, a soprano with plenty of opportunity to show off her brilliant high notes and trills and every other trick she learned in the conservatory, and, to top it off, a mysterious ghost haunting the Scottish Highlands. This is not to say that Donizetti employed clichés, but rather that what was fresh and original in Donizetti's hands became clichés in the works of lesser composers. As Emma Bovary watched the opera, “She filled her heart with the melodious laments as they slowly floated up to her accompanied by the strains of the double basses, like the cries of a castaway in the tumult of a storm.

    L’ELISIR D’AMORE – AN OPERA BY GAETANO DONIZETTI Researched and presented by George Plohn During our Sunday opera series at Esplanade, we encountered until now Gaetano Donizetti in some of his other operas, namely Lucia di Lammermoor, Anna Bolena and Don Pasquale, and today we present another Donizettian gem, L'elisir d'amore (Italian for The Elixir of Love). This is a comic opera in two acts, a lovely sentimental comedy. Donizetti, a man of opposites, known in equal measure for his delightful opera buffa comic pieces, such as this one, but also for his tragic operas like the blood-soaked tragic tale of Lucia di Lammermoor. Written in haste in a six-week period, so much so that working at a frenzied pace, he wrote only the dots of the notes on the staff and then he’d come back and put in the stems and flags later. L'elisir d'amore was for long time the most often performed opera in Italy in the XIXth century and it has remained continually in the international opera repertory since then. There is also personal history in this opera, as Donizetti's military service was bought by a rich woman, so that, unlike his brother Giuseppe, he did not have to serve in the Austrian army, Lombardy at that time being under Austrian rule, and this fact was made part of this opera; Adina, the soprano protagonist in this opera buying Nemorino’s military service contract so he doesn’t have to go to war. The opera was composed and first performed with a tumultuous success in 1832, when Donizetti was 35 years old.

    2021 Opera in Schools Tour presents Gaetano Donizetti’s DON PASQUALE Directed by Jacqueline Coats and designed by Elizabeth Whiting & Jan Ubels - RESOURCE PACK – Proudly supported by Kia ora! To help prepare your tamariki for our visit, here is what to expect from the performance: New Zealand Opera will come to your school on the day arranged and set up for the performance in the school hall or another suitable space as discussed beforehand. We will bring our own set and costumes, which have been specially designed to pack up quickly and fit in the back of a van, along with the keyboard. We will usually do two performances a day on this tour and we are travelling from Auckland to Christchurch via Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua, Taupō, Whanganui, Wellington, Nelson, and Blenheim. Over the six-week tour we will perform to more than 9000 tamariki from years 1-8 around the country. The performance is of Don Pasquale, which is our adaptation of Donizetti’s opera of the same name. Our opera is 45 minutes long, in English, and is adapted especially for tamariki in schools. The whole presentation will be one hour long, as we will also have a 5min introduction to the performance as well as a 10 minute Q & A discussion with all of your tamariki afterwards. This is a great opportunity for your tamariki to ask any questions they may have about the cast, their training, the production etc. and to share anything they would like to say about what they have seen and heard. Please help us to prepare your tamariki for the event by taking them through the information in the pack and doing some of the activities with them.

    Synopsis Rome, mid-19th century Act I scene 1 Don Pasquale’s house scene 2 Norina’s terrace Act II Don Pasquale’s house Act III scene 1 Don Pasquale’s house scene 2 Don Pasquale’s garden Act I The old bachelor Don Pasquale plans to marry in order to punish his rebellious nephew, Ernesto, who is in love with the young widow Norina. Pasquale wants an heir so he can cut the young man off without a penny. He consults Dr. Malatesta, who suggests as a bride his own beautiful younger sister. Feeling rejuvenated, the delighted Pasquale asks Malatesta to arrange a meeting at once. When Ernesto arrives and again refuses to marry a woman of his uncle’s choice, Pasquale not only tells him that he will have to leave the house, but also informs his nephew of his own marriage plans. With no inheritance, Ernesto sees his dreams evaporating. To make matters worse, he learns that his friend Malatesta has arranged Pasquale’s marriage. On her terrace, Norina laughs over a silly romantic story she’s reading. She is certain of her own ability to charm a man. Malatesta arrives. He is in fact plotting on her and Ernesto’s behalf and explains his plan: Norina is to impersonate his (nonexistent) sister, marry Pasquale in a mock ceremony, and drive him to such desperation that he will be at their mercy. Norina is eager to play the role if it will help her and Ernesto be together. Act II Ernesto, who knows nothing of Malatesta’s scheme, is desperate about the apparent loss of Norina and imagines his future as an exile.
