He was born on September 3rd, 1986 near San Diego in the state of California. He first tried snowboarding at the age of six to copy his older brother but soon discovered he had a real talent for the sport. His family began to take the three-hour-long journey to San Bernadino Mountains as often as they could, so that Shaun could practice. By the age of seven, Shaun won a number of snowboarding competitions and managed to get a sponsorship deal. He became a professional snowboarder at the age of 13 and, at 16, he was the youngest competitor to ever win the US Open. A Love of Music Shaun is passionate about music and was in a band called Bad Things when they went on tour around the world. Olympic Medals Shaun won his first Olympic gold medal at the 2006 Games in Turin at the age of 19. He went on to win gold at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver.     Shaun White & Elena Hight Win Halfpipe Titles at the 30th Burton US Open Stratton Mountain, VT (March 10, 2012) Shaun White (USA) and Elena Hight (USA) won the 30th annual Burton US Open halfpipe competition today, taking home $25,000 each and one of the most coveted titles in snowboarding. It was a day that will go down in history for many reasons – the weather was perfect, the competitions came down to the wire and record-breaking crowds descended on Stratton to be a part of the landmark 30th anniversary of the US Open. Both the men’s and women’s competitions were nail-biters, with the podium switching up constantly throughout the finals. In the women’s contest, Elena Hight had an unforgettable day as she earned her first-ever US Open championship title and was the first rider to break Kelly Clark’s 16-competition winning streak. With only 3/10ths of a point between Elena and Kelly, it was a very tough call for the judges to make. In the end, Elena won with a score of 86.50 and a run that included back-to-back 900s, a trick combination she’s struggled with over the past year. Rounding out the women’s halfpipe podium was Ellery Hollingsworth, who came in third. “I’m really happy with the whole weekend – the pipe and weather were amazing,” said Elena. “I haven’t been at the Open for a couple of years, and it’s great to come back and embrace the 30th anniversary of the event.” The men’s halfpipe final was undoubtedly one of the best in recent memory, with past US Open champions like Danny Kass and Shaun White battling it out with top riders like Louie Vito, Iouri Podladtchikov and Danny Davis.

    Sports of The Winter Olympics: Snowboarding The Sport Packet #10 Halfpipe Competitors take off from the halfpipe’s rim, performing challenging aerial maneuvers, including flips, twists and spins. They complete each trick by traveling back and forth between the halfpipe’s walls. Athletes complete two runs. The event takes place in a semi-circular ditch, or half of a pipe, dug into the surface of a hill. The halfpipe is typically 110 meters long with 3 to 4 meter deep vertical sides, each on an 85 degree rounded slope. The width from wall to wall is 13 meters to 15 meters. The format for the men and women’s event is the same. Parallel Giant Slalom Two competitors race simultaneously side by side down two courses. They take two runs, switching sides after the first one. The setting of the courses, the configura- tion of the ground and the preparation of the snow must be as identical as possible. The format is the same for the men and women’s event. The vertical drop of the course must be between 120 meters and 200 meters. The number of turns should be equal to 11 percent to 15 percent of the vertical drop in meters. Athletes must navigate around gates, which are 20 meters to 25 meters apart. A gate consists of two poles - one outside pole and one turning pole. Triangular banners are fastened between the poles so lower edges of the flag touch the snow. The banner is 110 cm tall on its long side and 25 cm tall on the short side; its base length is 130 cm.

Taking up in-depth portraits of different aspects of living and growing up in a media-saturated era, the series takes an innovative approach to the genre of the ethnographic monograph. Through detailed case studies, the books explore practices at the forefront of media change through vivid description analyzed in relation to social, cultural, and historical context. New media practice is embedded in the routines, rituals, and institutions—both public and domestic—of everyday life. The books portray both average and exceptional practices but all grounded in a descriptive frame that ren- ders even exotic practices understandable. Rather than taking media content or technol- ogy as determining, the books focus on the productive dimensions of everyday media practice, particularly of children and youth. The emphasis is on how specific communities make meanings in their engagement with convergent media in the context of everyday life, focusing on how media is a site of agency rather than passivity.     The Flying Tomato Instantly recognizable for his shoulder length unkempt red hair, the Italians at the 2006 Torino Winter Olympic Games greeted athlete Shaun White as “Il Pomodoro Volante!” – “The Flying Tomato.” Shaun White indeed flies through the air at heights of 20 feet above the ground with his skilled feats at his dominant sports, snowboarding and skateboarding. This robust and unstoppable athlete actually started out life with a serious problem, a birth defect in his heart. It took two major surgeries before he reached a year old to repair his heart. Yet, this early medical problem has never slowed Shaun down one single bit. Shaun began skiing with his family when he was just four years old. He was such a fearless skier that his Mom put him on a snowboard instead of skis when he was six to slow him down and keep him safe. Shaun excelled at snowboarding, winning his first championship when he was just seven. A company named Burton Snowboards made Shaun custom child-size equipment and he was able to turn into a professional snowboarder when he was thirteen, soaring ever higher. Even before he became a pro snowboarder he was learning new sports. Skateboarding superstar Tony Hawk befriended Shaun and the two athletes, one a seasoned champion and one a youngster, would skateboard together. Soon Shaun was competing in skateboarding events as well snowboarding. For anyone who asserts that the two sports are easy to combine because they both use boards don’t understand the level of unique skills required to be a champion in these two sports.
