That means the power output of a piston engine is half a power stroke per one piston revolution. A Quasiturbine engine, on the other hand, doesn't need pistons. Instead, the four strokes of a typical piston engine are arranged sequentially around the oval housing. There's no need for the crankshaft to perform the rotary conversion. sy stem it... Photo-detonation is a superior combustion mode that requires more compression and greater sturdiness than piston or rotary engines can provide. Now, let's see what this combustion mode is all about. Internal combustion engines fall into four categories based on how well air and fuel are mixed together in the combustion chamber and how the fuel is ignited. Type I includes engines in which the air and fuel mix thoroughly to form what is called a homogenous mixture. When a spark ignites the fuel, a hot flame sweeps through the mixture, burning the fuel as it goes. This, of course, is the gasoline engine. A spark plug then ignites the mixture, burning more of the fuel and creating less waste. In Type III, air and fuel are only partially mixed in the combustion chamber. This heterogeneous mixture is then compressed, which causes the temperature to rise until self-ignition takes place. A diesel engine operates in this fashion. Finally, in Type IV, the best attributes of gasoline and diesel engines are combined. A premixed fuel-air charge undergoes tremendous compression until the fuel self-ignites. This is what happens in a photo- detonation engine, and because it employs a homogenous charge and compression ignition, it is often described as an HCCI engine. HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) combustion results in virtually no emissions and superior fuel efficiency. This is because photo-detonation engines completely combust the fuel, leaving behind no hydrocarbons to be treated by a catalytic converter or simply expelled into the air.

The aims are to (1) improve the understanding of combustion process, and (2) quantify the influence of rotational speed, excess air ratio, initial pressure and temperature on combustion characteristics. The chamber space changed with crankshaft rotation. Due to the complexity of chamber volume, an equivalent modeling method was presented to simulate the chamber space variation. The numerical simulations were performed by solving the incompressible, multiphase Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes Equations via the commercial code FLUENT using a transport equation-based combustion model; a realizable turbulence model and finite-rate/eddy-dissipation model were used to account for the effect of local factors on the combustion characteristics.

A stroke refers to the full travel of the piston along the cylinder, in either direction. The four separate strokes are termed: 1. Intake: Also known as induction or suction. This stroke of the piston begins at top dead center (T.D.C.) and ends at bottom dead center (B.D.C.). In this stroke the intake valve must be in the open position while the piston pulls an air-fuel mixture into the cylinder by producing vacuum pressure into the cylinder through its downward motion. The piston is moving down as air is being sucked in by the downward motion against the piston. 2. Compression: This stroke begins at B.D.C, or just at the end of the suction stroke, and ends at T.D.C. In this stroke the piston compresses the air-fuel mixture in preparation for ignition during the power stroke (below). Both the intake and exhaust valves are closed during this stage. 3. Combustion: Also known as power or ignition. This is the start of the second revolution of the four stroke cycle. At this point the crankshaft has completed a full 360 degree revolution. While the piston is at T.D.C. (the end of the compression stroke) the compressed air-fuel mixture is ignited by a spark plug (in a gasoline engine) or by heat generated by high compression (diesel engines), forcefully returning the piston to B.D.C.

    ROTARY COMBUSTION ENGINE This article is about internal combustion engines that do not use conventional pistons. See also rotary engine for the World War I aircraft engines by that name. A rotary engine is an internal combustion engine that does not use pistons in the way a reciprocating enginedoes, but instead uses one or more rotors, sometimes called rotary pistons. Further clarification The term rotary combustion engine has been suggested as an alternative name for these engines to distinguish them from the obsolete aircraft engines also known as rotary engines. However both continue to be called rotary engines and only the context determines which type is meant. In particular, the only commercial producer of (pistonless) rotary engines as of 2005, Mazda, consistently refers to their Wankel engines asrotary engines. The basic concept of a (pistonless) rotary engine is to avoid the reciprocating motion of the piston with its inherent vibration and rotational-speed-related mechanical stress. As of 2005 the Wankel engine is the only successful pistonless rotary engine, but many similar concepts have been proposed and are under various stages of development. There are countless other examples of rotary engines varying in rotor design, size and many other categories. Notable examples include: The quasiturbine. The Sarich orbital engine. A rotary engine developed by Texas machinist Frank Turner which was licensed by Malcolm Bricklin for use in place of the V8 powering the Bricklin SV- 1 vehicle, but never used. Since most of the energy consumed by an internal combustion engine is wasted, capturing much of that wasted energy can provide a large increase in energy efficiency. For example, a typical engine producing 100 kilowatts of driveshaft power expels 68 kilowatts of heat energy through the radiator and 136 kilowatts through the exhaust. The possibilities of where and how to capture this lost energy are examined in this paper. The solution of recovering heat energy from the exhaust through the catalytic converter with a Stirling engine was examined due to its practicality.

This paper presents a Quasiturbine thermal management strategy in the development of high-efficiency engines for the 21st century. In the concept engine, high-octane fuels are preferred because higher engine efficiencies can be attained with these fuels. Higher efficiencies mean less fuel consumption and lower atmospheric emissions per unit of work produced by the engine. While the concept engine only takes a step closer to the efficiency principles of Beau de Rochas (Otto), it is readily feasible and constitutes the most efficient alternative to the ideal efficiencies awaiting the development of the Quasiturbine photo-detonation engine, in which compression pressure and rapidity of ignition are maximized. One of the most difficult challenges in engine technology today is the urgent need to increase engine thermal efficiency. Thermal management strategies and the choice of fuels will play crucial roles in the development of high-efficiency engines for the 21st century. However, it was during the 19th century that the fundamental principles governing the efficiency of internal combustion engines were first posited. In 1862, Alphonse Beau de Rochas published his theory regarding the ideal operating cycle of the internal combustion engine. He stated that the conditions necessary for maximum efficiency were: (1) maximum cylinder volume with minimum cooling surface; (2) maximum rapidity of expansion; (3) maximum pressure of the ignited charge and (4) maximum ratio of expansion.
