Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com The life and career of actor Anthony Perkins seems almost like a movie script from the times in which he lived. One of the dark, vulnerable anti-heroes who gained popularity during Hollywood's "post-golden" era, Perkins began his career as a teen heartthrob and ended it unable to escape the role of villain. In his personal life, he often seemed as tortured as the troubled characters he played on film, hiding--and perhaps despising--his true nature while desperately seeking happiness and "normality." Perkins was born on April 4, 1932 in New York City, the only child of actor Osgood Perkins and Janet Esseltyn Rane. His father died when he was only five, and Perkins was reared by his strong-willed and possibly abusive mother. He followed his father into the theater, joining Actors Equity at the age of fifteen and working backstage until he got his first acting roles in summer stock productions of popular plays like Junior Miss and My Sister Eileen. He continued to hone his acting skills while attending Rollins College in Florida, performing in such classics as Harvey and The Importance of Being Earnest. Perkins was an unhappy young man, and the theater provided escape from his loneliness and depression. "There was nothing about me I wanted to be," he told Mark Goodman in a People Weekly interview. "But I felt happy being somebody else." During his late teens, Perkins went to Hollywood and landed his first film role in the 1953 George Cukor production, The Actress, in which he appeared with Spencer Tracy.

    HUGH WOOLDRIDGE Director and Lighting Designer; Visiting Professor Hugh Wooldridge has produced, directed and devised theatre and television productions all over the world. He has taught and given master-classes in the UK, Europe, the US, South Africa and Australia. He trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and made his West End debut as an actor in The Dame of Sark with Dame Celia Johnson.     Pops program lovingly skewers divas By Mark Kanny TRIBUNE-REVIEW CLASSICAL MUSIC CRITIC Saturday, April 21, 2007 Uproarious humor lifts the Pops' salute to Broadway Divas to a must-see show, one that also includes superb straight performances from the rich legacy of American musicals. As always, guest conductor Jack Everly brought a beautifully crafted production, created by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra-managed Symphonic Pops Consortium, of which he is music director. The evening opens with a two-part musical prelude arranged by Everly that starts with an instrumental medley and is completed by four of the five singers performing "There's No Business Like Show Business." After Cara Johnston's winning solo in "I Could Have Danced All Night," Toni DiBuono offered the evening's first parody by singing "There's No Divas Like Old Divas, Like Old Divas Like Me" in Ethel Merman style. Everly introduced Heather Tepe, 14, as a "diva in training" to sing the ultimate child-star vehicle, "Tomorrow" from "Annie." Because "Tomorrow" has been ubiquitous to the point of absurdity, the following number had the audience in stitches. DiBuono returned in costume as Annie, as though she had sung the premiere 30 years ago. That Ethel Merman-style New York accent was perfect for "I'll be 49 -- ta- morrah." The lyrics by David Levy were hilarious through all its verses. The Pittsburgh Symphony performed magnificently under Everly's leadership, producing more beautiful sonorities -- fabulous strings -- with much better balances than it has at several of the Mellon Grand Classics concerts this season. Everly offered a little misdirection in his introduction to "With One Look" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Sunset Boulevard" about aging star Norma Desmond.

PUCHER (German FALCON CREST Fan Club) I sent Michael Preece, who directed ten episodes of Falcon Crest, particularly the series première, a request for an interview via e-mail, and he replied immediately so we scheduled a phone conversation for July 31, 2009. He has been one of the most successful directors of U.S. TV shows for more than 30 years. His directing credits include many hit series from the 1970’s, ’80’s and ’90’s, such as The Streets of San Francisco, Knots Landing, Fantasy Island, Flamingo Road, Trapper John, M.D., The Incredible Hulk, T.J. Hooker, Riptide, Stingray, Jake and the Fatman, MacGyver, Hunter, Renegade, Seventh Heaven and Walker, Texas Ranger as well as — last but not least — Dallas. Getting to Work on Falcon Crest Michael stepped right into the middle of how much he enjoyed working on Falcon Crest, particularly with Jane Wyman. He said she wanted him to direct more often, but he was extremely busy with Dallas: “I had to go to Jane Wyman and tell her that I couldn’t work on the show.” He left no doubt that directing Dallas did not leave much room for anything else because he directed approximately 70 episodes of the series. But he enjoyed doing an episode of Falcon Crest from time to time. “So how did you get your first assignment for Falcon Crest, the first episode, In His Father’s House?” I asked.

Some of these people died from their asthma just like an average of 14 Americans die daily from this incurable disease. Asthma is the most chronic incurable disease affecting children. It is the leading reason for school and workplace absenteeism. More girls than boys have asthma and more African-Americans and Hispanics have asthma than Caucasian Americans. No one yet knows why some people have asthma and others don’t. Scientists think it’s a combination of genetics or heredity and environmental factors. If one or more of your parents have asthma, there’s a good chance you’ll have it, too. Almost 70% of those with asthma have allergic asthma, meaning their asthma symptoms are started or triggered by allergies. Others have asthma that is triggered by exercise, and some have a combination. Some people have mild asthma which means they don’t have symptoms often; others have severe asthma with symptoms most of the time. Asthma is a chronic disease, which means it never goes away, but it can be controlled. It can be controlled or managed by eliminating or avoiding the triggers or allergens and irritants which cause symptoms or flare-ups and by following the medication plan that a physician prescribes.
