JUNE 2014 #YOMZANSIMAG 03 CHIEF EDITOR NYAKALLO TEFU EDITOR’S NOTE Youth Month y mother always says: “everything you do, you do it for yourself and your future; you don’t do it for Myour friends, teachers or your parents but YOURSELF.” I decided to share my mother’s wise words because the youth today seem to think they do things for other people, they think the good and/or bad things they do are to benefit other people. “Let me start smoking, my parents won’t find out either way”, question; do those lungs belong to your parents? I don’t think so. Moral of the story is that every action has a reaction, you might not face the consequences or reap the rewards now, but in due time you will. My message to the youth this month: let us not forget what June 16 means, let’s live each day with purpose and prove to those that don’t believe in growth that we can do it and will do it. In this month’s issue we are all about youth month, young people representing the rest of us. We get a little bit serious then back to entertaining you. • BRANDS of 2014 Johannesburg, Friday 30May 2014
10 YEARS OF THE SUNDAY TIME’s GENERATION NEXT AWARDS 2004 – 2014 SA’s YOUTH CAST THEIR VOTE FOR THE ‘COOLEST’ BRANDS OF 2014 Johannesburg, Friday 30 May 2014: A decade into the celebrated Sunday Times Generation Next Awards, SA’s youth continue to guide marketers on what is considered to be ‘cool’. Last night the awards ceremony, held at the Nu Metro IL Grande cinema at Monte Casino in association with Waltons, saluted South Africa’s most popular brands, products, celebrities and sport stars – as voted by almost six thousand youth aged 8 -23. The event hosted by Highveld FM’s Anele Mdoda was topped-off with a live performance from local house band, MiCasa - who were voted Coolest Music Stars of 2014. Trevor Ormerod, General Manager: Group Sales for Times Media says, “This year we’ve reached an incredible milestone marking a decade of the annual Generation Next Awards, an event that we are proud to say has established a strong presence amongst the youth, marketers and brands in South Africa today.” The Generation Next Survey, conducted by HDI Youth Marketeers, spans 72 categories that analyse the influence of products and people in the lives of South Africa’s youth and what they consider to be cool. “That we are now on year 10 of the survey feels crazy, but amazing! It has grown so much in that time, from an initial sample of less than 2 000 to over 5 500 now. And while changes are always fun to see, it’s also great to see some winners like Coca-Cola, Vodacom and Doritos who have scooped gold for a decade,” says Jason Levin, MD of HDI.

  • Mayor Mashaba Kicks Off a Re Sebetseng Partnership with Global Citizen
A City of Johannesburg Press Statement by the Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba Mayor Mashaba kicks off A Re Sebetseng partnership with Global Citizen Date: 11 September 2018 Release: immediate Today, the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Herman Mashaba, is pleased to officially launch the City of Johannesburg’s partnership with Global Citizen for A Re Sebetseng clean-up campaigns. The partnership was announced last month, which bolsters efforts by the City to improve the environment, cut plastic use, and embrace a healthy lifestyle. With Global Citizen’s mission to build the largest movement of people taking action to end extreme poverty by 2030, it is only fitting that we combine our efforts towards this objective. Good progress has been made in this regard. So far, over 300 000 tonnes of waste has been collected since the launch in 2017. A Re Sebetseng (meaning “let’s work”in Sesotho) is a monthly call to action that encourages City employees and residents to come out in their numbers through volunteerism, and work together to turn Johannesburg into a City where residents can live, work and play in a healthy environment. This campaign will include educating Global Citizens about reducing plastic usage and encourage recycling waste. This campaign will kick off on Saturday 15th of September 2018, it coincides with World Clean Up Day. With the support of Mayor Mashaba, councillors, City departments and regional offices, Johannesburg residents are encouraged to unite with the rest of the world for one goal – a cleaner world. The City will provide bags and gloves to all participants which can be collected at City walk-in centres, depots, clinics and libraries.

Soweto, The s“ torybook Place”: Tourism And Feeling In A South African Township Abstract This dissertation deals with the role of tour guides in creating and telling the story of Soweto – a township southwest of Johannesburg, South Africa. The ts ory speaks of a place afflicted by poverty because of its history of segregation during apartheid but emerging out of these struggles to lead its nation in a post-apartheid culture. I argue that Soweto’s story was created out of a governmental mandate for the township to become one of Gauteng’s tourism locations, and out of a knowledge that the transformation story from apartheid to a ‘rainbow nation’ would not sell in this context. After being created, Soweto’s story was affirmed through urban branding strategies and distributed to tourism markets across the world. It is a storybook – a narrative with a beginning, a climax, and an ending; it is easily packaged, marketed and sold to individuals from across the world, and this is done through the senses and emotions.

  • Global Hip-Hop Culture and the Scopophilic Spectacle of Women in South African Hip-Hop Music Videos Ntebaleng Mpetsi Toks Oyedem
Ntebaleng Mpetsi Toks Oyedemi Global hip-hop culture and the scopophilic spectacle of women in South African hip-hop music videos ABSTRACT In many hip-hop music videos, women’s value is reduced to sensuous display of sexuality. As a result visual pleasure is created through the representation of women as eager and willing sexual objects. This article assesses the techniques and ways women are sexualised in South African hip-hop music videos, and how their representation attempts to create visual pleasure for those that consume these videos. Four critical elements are adopted from Laura Mulvey’s seminal theoretical discourse about the positioning of women in narrative cinema, to study the gender representation and sexual presentation of women in two popular South African hip-hop music videos. The analysis reveals that appealing to the male gaze, processes of objectification, gender division of labour and camera techniques are ways of presenting a sexualised spectacle of women for the visual pleasure of male characters and audiences of the videos. INTRODUCTION The representation of women in hip-hop music videos has been a focus of many studies (Miller- Young, 2007, Clark et al., 2016), and for many years studies have examined the representation of women as objects and props in music videos (Seidman, 1992, McClane-Bunn, 2010). The objectification of the female body has permeated social and cultural practices for decades; as MacKinnon (1989:149) states: “all women live in objectification the way fish live in water”. Since emerging in the mainstream music culture in the early 1980s, the music video format has generated a fair amount of scholarly attention, with research focusing especially on the harmful imagery found in many music videos and the potential effects of such imagery on adolescent viewers (Seidman, 1992; Sherman & Dominic, 1986; Smith & Boyson, 2002; Wallis, 2011).
