The 2001 Central Washington University baseball season had its share of ups and downs including a winning streak of seven games and a five-game losing streak. Through it all, the Wildcats nearly doubled their 2000-win output (14) and reached the post-season for the first time since 1993. Central began its march to the playoffs with a pair of losses to defending NAIA national champion Lewis-Clark State before bouncing back to squeak past Puget Sound and Whitman in the Missionary Invitational at Walla Walla. CWU continued its play around the .500 mark through the first part of March after splitting home twin bills with British Columbia and Pacific Lutheran. Central salvaged a split with UBC on Colby Sherrill's game-winning sacrifice fly in the nightcap while Jeff Perry's three hitter sparked the Wildcat win in game one against the Lutes. Wildcat character faced its stiffest challenge at a weekend tournament hosted by Region I rivals Albertson and Northwest Nazarene. The 'Yotes dismantled the 'Cats 26-0 while banging out 31 hits, the most ever allowed by a Central pitching staff. It would have been easy to assume that Desi Storey's ball club was headed for a lost weekend in the Treasure Valley. But the heart of the 2001 Wildcats would beat stronger in its next three tournament games, victories over Northwest Nazarene, Whitworth and Albertson. Joe Reid laced four hits in Central's 11-9 win over NNU. Right hander Brandon Klump claimed victories versus Whitworth (6-4) and Albertson (14-11) by hurling 8 1/3 innings of solid relief, allowing just one earned run and two hits. Central returned to Tomlinson Field the following weekend to open Cascade Conference play against St. Martin's. Storey saw the Saints as a playoff contender prior to the regular season. That having been said, Central emerged as the team destined for the postseason following a four-game sweep which featured a rally from a three-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning of game three of the series. Rick Leyes and Klump combined on a two-hitter in the weekend finale. CWU entered the following weekend confident of success when it took the field against eventual participant Western Oregon with the league lead at stake. The series began with promise as the 'Cats jumped to a 7-2 lead entering the sixth inning of game one. But WOU would score seven times in the frame to take control of the game and the series. The Wolves went on to post four straight wins over the stunned Central nine. Momentum was rehamassed the following week with a sweep of Concordia and non-league victory over Whitman (9-8). A sacrifice fly by Aaron Tennis in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted CWU over the Missionaries. UBC would then come to Ellensburg and cool off the Wildcats by taking three victories in four games. The lone Wildcat win, which featured a 4-for-4 performance by NAIA Region I all-star Justin Williams, left CWU 7-7 in the Cascade Conference and 15-12 overall at the season's midpoint. Following a victory at Whitman and four defeats to Lewis-Clark State, Central again found itself at the .500 mark. Three-run home runs by Tennis and Seth Hill, combined with four and-a-third innings of shutout relief by Mark Brownlee, gave the Wildcats their third win in as many tries against Whitman. Ryan McCarthy went 5-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI in ~ +; l..!l.k..!l. . •n•..L..C..S:..C._. The Wildcats divided their next eight league games, winning three-of-four at Eastern Oregon and dropping three-of-four at Albertson. Sandwiched in between was a non-league loss at Washington State. April 's final week provided the Crimson and Black with an opportunity to take control of the fourth and final Region I playoff spot. Initiative was seized with a doubleheader sweep at fifth-place Concordia and a four-game series victory against Northwest Nazarene. A 16-9 win in game two of the NNU series was the 200th at Central for Storey, making him the second baseball coach in school history to reach that plateau. CWU won the final game of the series in dramatic fashion on a pinch-hit, RBI single by Sam Chamaty in the 11th inning. After a non-league loss at PLU, Central went into the final weekend of league play needing just one win at Western Baptist to clinch the program's first playoff berth in eight seasons. Marc Parrish and Josh Roberts combined on a three-hit shutout as CWU took game one of the weekend set to earn a spot in the Region I playoffs. The Wildcats traveled to Monmouth, Oregon to face Western Oregon in the first round of the four-team tournament. The two teams battled to a 3-3 tie through five innings. The Wolves scored three times in the sixth, but the'Cats responded with three in the seventh to knot the game at six. WOU, however, scored the game-winning run in the eighth and held off CWU for the hard-fought victory. Albertson would end Central's season the next day with a 9-2 win in a loser-out contest. CWU concluded its campaign 27-27. Thus ended Central's affiliation with the NAIA. In 2002, the Wildcats will join Western Oregon, Northwest Nazarene and St. Martin's at the NCAA Division II level.
