Through it all, the Wildcats nearly doubled their 2000-win output (14) and reached the post-season for the first time since 1993. Central began its march to the playoffs with a pair of losses to defending NAIA national champion Lewis-Clark State before bouncing back to squeak past Puget Sound and Whitman in the Missionary Invitational at Walla Walla. CWU continued its play around the .500 mark through the first part of March after splitting home twin bills with British Columbia and Pacific Lutheran. Central salvaged a split with UBC on Colby Sherrill's game-winning sacrifice fly in the nightcap while Jeff Perry's three hitter sparked the Wildcat win in game one against the Lutes. Wildcat character faced its stiffest challenge at a weekend tournament hosted by Region I rivals Albertson and Northwest Nazarene. The 'Yotes dismantled the 'Cats 26-0 while banging out 31 hits, the most ever allowed by a Central pitching staff. It would have been easy to assume that Desi Storey's ball club was headed for a lost weekend in the Treasure Valley. But the heart of the 2001 Wildcats would beat stronger in its next three tournament games, victories over Northwest Nazarene, Whitworth and Albertson. Joe Reid laced four hits in Central's 11-9 win over NNU. Right hander Brandon Klump claimed victories versus Whitworth (6-4) and Albertson (14-11) by hurling 8 1/3 innings of solid relief, allowing just one earned run and two hits. Central returned to Tomlinson Field the following weekend to open Cascade Conference play against St. Martin's. Storey saw the Saints as a playoff contender prior to the regular season. That having been said, Central emerged as the team destined for the postseason following a four-game sweep which featured a rally from a three-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning of game three of the series. Rick Leyes and Klump combined on a two-hitter in the weekend finale. CWU entered the following weekend confident of success when it took the field against eventual World Series participant Western Oregon with the league lead at stake. The series began with promise as the 'Cats jumped to a 7-2 lead entering the sixth inning of game one. But WOU would score seven times in the frame to take control of the game and the series. The Wolves went on to post four straight wins over the stunned Central nine.

  • Heroes and Rallies Baseball
Heroes and Rallies Baseball Setup Pick two teams to go head to head, and fill out your lineups on the scoresheet. Each team receives 8 skill assignments to give to individual players. All of the skill assignments listed below must be used within your starting lineup for a total of 8. A player may possess two assignments if you wish. Rate your lineup by placing the appropriate notation beside a player’s name on the scoresheet. 1) star hitter (H) 2) star slugger (S) 3) star runner (R) 4) star fielder (F) 5) poor hitter (H-) 6) weak hitter (S-) 7) slow runner (R-) 8) poor fielder (F-) Once a player has a skill assignment, he cannot transfer it to another player. There is one additional skill assignment available for an ace pitcher (X). You may, however, choose not to start one. Make any pitcher a poor hitter as well (H-), so there will be two poor hitters if a pitcher is in the lineup. Game Play Roll the dice for each player who comes up to bat, reading the colored die first and the white die second. If a result occurs on the Batting chart which displays an image of a ballplayer, the inning is considered finished with no further scoring. Draw an X in the box on the scoresheet representing the current hitter’s at-bat. When his team next comes up to bat, the next player in the lineup will hit. If the color of a chart result corresponds to the color of the skill assignment of the player who is currently up to bat, the result changes to the one shown on the bottom of the Batting chart.

I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

  • A's News Clips, Sunday, June 27, 2010 All-Star Outing by Trevor
A’s News Clips, Sunday, June 27, 2010 All-Star outing by Trevor Cahill lifts Oakland A's By Joe Stiglich, Contra Costa Times A's starter Trevor Cahill said he's likely to spend his All-Star break logging beach time in his hometown of Oceanside, just outside of San Diego. As things are unfolding, Cahill's agenda could get redirected north to Anaheim. The All-Star Game is at Angel Stadium on July 13, and Cahill is making a bid to represent the A's. He's building a case that's hard to ignore. Cahill limited the Pittsburgh Pirates to two hits over 72/3 innings in a 5-0 victory Saturday night in front of 25,068 fans at the Oakland Coliseum. He struck out a career-high 10 and won his sixth straight decision, giving him the longest winning streak by an A's starting pitcher since Dan Haren won 10 straight from April 18-July 1, 2007. The A's are likely to get just one player named to the All-Star team, and closer Andrew Bailey and catcher Kurt Suzuki figure to get strong consideration, too. Typical of his personality, Cahill (7-2, 2.88 ERA), who less than two months ago was at Triple-A Sacramento, takes a low-key approach about even hearing his name in the discussion. "When I was in Sacramento, I never thought I'd be where I'm at now, or even in consideration," Cahill said. "So just being mentioned, it means a lot. We've got plenty of guys that are good enough to be named All-Stars." The A's were bound to grab attention on 1970s Turn Back The Clock Night, regardless of how they played.
