43E Festival International Du Film De La Rochelle Du 26 Juin Au 5 Juillet 2015 Le Puzzle Des Cinémas Du Monde

Since his beloved violin was broken, Nasser Ali Khan, one of the most renowned musicians of his day, has lost all taste for life. Finding no instrument worthy of replacing it, he decides to confine himself to bed to await death. As he hopes for its arrival, he plunges into deep reveries, with dreams as melancholic as they are joyous, taking him back to his youth and even to a conversation with Azraël, the Angel of Death, who reveals the future of his children... As pieces of the puzzle gradually fit together, the poignant secret of his life comes to light: a wonderful story of love which inspired his genius and his music... DIRECTORS’ STATEMENT By Marjane Satrapi & Vincent Paronnaud Chicken with Plums is the story of a famous musician whose prized instrument has been ruined. -

The U.S. remained the number 1 source of films (57%), ahead of Germany, whose market share nevertheless picked up by 0.7%. The number of French films programmed on the public broadcasters ceased to decline this year, and even increased on several regional channels. ZDF remained the leading broadcaster of French films. This channel ramped up its share of movie programming devoted to French fare, running at 15%, against 13% in 1997. It successfully reran l’Ange noir, and presented le Garçu and Toxic affaire, as well as a number of classics such as les Seins de glace, Don Camillo Monseigneur and la Guerre des polices. Since 1995, the number of films shown on ARD had dwindled. It stabilized in 1998 at 67 titles, with a host of recent titles including Élisa, la Fleur de mon secret, L. 627 and les Apprentis. Regional public channels saw an uptrend: up 6 titles on Bayern 3, up 10 on West 3 and up 19 on B1 in Berlin. Among the commercial channels, TM 3 outstripped Vox in the number of French titles scheduled: it programmed 78, 13 more than in 1997. This channel (owned by the TeleMûnchen Group) broadcast essentially catalogue films, and devoted 28% of film slots to French fare, an all-time high in Germany. -

The Shoah on Screen – Representing Crimes Against Humanity Big Screen, Film-Makers Generally Have to Address the Key Question of Realism
Mémoi In attempting to portray the Holocaust and crimes against humanity on the The Shoah on screen – representing crimes against humanity big screen, film-makers generally have to address the key question of realism. This is both an ethical and an artistic issue. The full range of approaches has emember been adopted, covering documentaries and fiction, historical reconstructions such as Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List, depicting reality in all its details, and more symbolic films such as Roberto Benigni’s Life is beautiful. Some films have been very controversial, and it is important to understand why. Is cinema the best way of informing the younger generations about what moire took place, or should this perhaps be left, for example, to CD-Roms, videos Memoi or archive collections? What is the difference between these and the cinema as an art form? Is it possible to inform and appeal to the emotions without being explicit? Is emotion itself, though often very intense, not ambivalent? These are the questions addressed by this book which sets out to show that the cinema, a major art form today, cannot merely depict the horrors of concentration camps but must also nurture greater sensitivity among increas- Mémoire ingly younger audiences, inured by the many images of violence conveyed in the media. ireRemem moireRem The Shoah on screen – www.coe.int Representing crimes The Council of Europe has 47 member states, covering virtually the entire continent of Europe.
