CHRISTMAS AT GLENSHEEN: "Through the Eyes of a Child" By Ann Russell "Through the Eyes of a Child" was the theme for the 1984 Christmas season at Glensheen. Visitors and docents alike were treated to all that a child holds dear at this magical season: wonder, excitement, and — toys! Antique toys and dolls appeared under Christmas trees and in almost every room of the man- sion'. Mr. and Mrs. William Gooder, owners of the Gooder Antique Toy and Doll Museum, 1907 E. 5th Street, Duluth, Min- nesota, provided the largest part of the ex- hibit while the rest were taken from Glen- sheen's own collection. During self-guided tours, new and returning visitors had an excellent opportunity to study the toys as well as each room at their own pace. The appeal of toys to all age groups was evident in the increased visitor atten- dance this year. Barbie has chosen to honour and recognise the Chancellor Merkel as a very modern role model for girls. Chancellor Merkel has successfully led her country while also having major impact with her work in Europe, where she recently received the Charlemagne Prize in recognition of her relentless work to reform the European Union. "Angela Merkel is an incredible role model and with this unique Angela Merkel Barbie Doll we want to honour and recognize her impact and influence on women all over the world to whom she has been a tremendous inspiration." said Richard Dickson, GM and Senior Vice President of Barbie. "For 50 years Barbie has inspired girls to believe they can be anything, and Chancellor Merkel certainly brings that message to life for girls worldwide." With Forbes Magazine naming her "the most powerful woman in the world at present time" for three years in a row, Angela Merkel represents what lies at the core of the Barbie brand. As Ruth Handler, Barbie's creator, explained; "My whole philosophy of Barbie was that through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be. • Fifty Years After She First Hit Toy Shops, 'Sindy' Doll Seeks
Strictly embargoed until 00.01hrs on Monday 2 July 2012 FIFTY YEARS AFTER SHE FIRST HIT TOY SHOPS, ‘SINDY’ DOLL SEEKS A LONG TERM PARTNER Global brand owners expected to show interest in iconic British doll Exeter, 2 July 2012 – After nearly 50 years, the British owner of the Sindy doll brand is looking for a long-term partner to help develop the core range of dolls. For generations of young girls Sindy has been a friend, confidante and cherished toy. The Sindy doll was launched in 1963, and for decades dominated the fashion doll market in Britain. Sindy has repeatedly been the best-selling toy, both in the UK and in overseas markets. Now, Sindy’s Exeter-based owner, Pedigree Toys, is to license or share equity in the iconic brand as part of a strategic shift towards its publishing and third party licensing businesses. Jerry Reynolds, CEO of Pedigree Group Ltd, commented: “Few brands have the emotive power and name recognition of Sindy. Millions of women in Britain grew up playing with her, and have fond memories of their days as ‘Sindy girls’. 1 “Over the years Sindy’s outfits have reflected changing fashions, and her hemlines rose and fell accordingly. But she has never lost her image as the demure girl next door – an enduring image that continues to appeal to young girls around the world. “The core of the Sindy brand remains the development and marketing of fashion dolls. As a business, Pedigree has moved away from toy manufacturing to focus on publishing and third party licensing.

  • Miniature Rag Doll (A 2015 Convention Workshop) This
Miniature Rag Doll (a 2015 convention workshop) This workshop takes a lot of preparation for the leader or club. The tiny doll’s features are printed on with fabric paint (or could be embroidered) and the doll is sewn and stuffed ahead of time. One piece dresses are cut out and sewn up the sides and underarm. The hem is turned under and stitched as well. The size can be made larger if the leader wishes. Supplies: muslin for the doll, fabric paint or embroidery floss for the features, red floss for hair, large-eyed needles, pearl cotton or other string for gathering, and small print fabrics for dresses. Participants will complete and dress a 2 ¾ inch cloth doll. Doll will be provided as shown on the left in the picture. Participants will add the red hair and sew a small dress for their doll. Additional dresses or a pin back will be offered. Skills: threading a needle, sewing with a running stitch, tying knots and a bow Juniors use a large-eyed needle and red floss to put hair on the doll. A stitch is taken at the top of the head and then a second one is taken in the same spot. The floss is cut off and another “tuft” is applied. Juniors can put as many “tufts” on the doll as they wish, either just following the stitch line around the head or filling in the whole back of the head. “Tufts” are then frizzed by using the needle to separate the floss strands. Keeping the wrong side of the dress toward themselves, the juniors fold over the end of each sleeve and run a gathering stitch of pearl cotton around the sleeve to hold the fabric back (leave long ends).
