THREE STARS First Star Rantanen’s first goal stood as the game winner, his seventh game-winning tally of the season. He ranks Nathan MacKinnon second on the team in game-winning markers (Gabriel Landeskog, 7) and is tied for fifth in the NHL (Leon 2 points (1g/1a) Draisaitl, Alex Ovechkin). Second Star Nathan MacKinnon extended his point streak to 10 games, the longest active streak in the NHL. He has Cale Makar produced 17 points (7g/10a) over that stretch and 30 points (12g/18a) in his last 18 contests (since March 2 points (0g/2a) 12). MacKinnon’s 1.37 points-per-game average ranks fourth in the NHL, and after finishing with a +2 rating tonight, he now ranks second in the league at +25. Third Star Since March 1, MacKinnon (12g/20a), Rantanen (17g/15a) and Gabriel Landeskog (12g/20a) have each Philipp Grubauer recorded 32 points, the top three scorers in the NHL during that time frame. 35 saves The Avalanche is one of three teams in the NHL to feature two 50-point scorers (MacKinnon, 52, Rantanen, 50). Philipp Grubauer finished with 35 saves to earn his 25th win of the season, tied with Andrei Vasilevskiy for the league lead. Grubauer started his 102nd game in an Avalanche sweater, moving into a tie with Craig Anderson for fifth place in Avalanche history (since 1995) in starts by a goalie and 10th in franchise history.     F IFTY IS A BIG NUMBER Flying wasn’t fun, and for a number of years it fit right in with everything else around the team. We just weren’t enjoying the game. For all three of those years that I hit the 50 mark, it was almost like if our line didn’t score we had no chance of winning the game. Billy and Danny Daoust and Tom Fergus, the three centres I played with over those years—I had great chemistry with all of them. But a lot of nights it felt like we were on our own. And I hated losing more than I liked winning. That’s the way I was as a kid; I didn’t like losing at anything. To put those seasons in historical perspective, a number of Leafs had gotten close to 50 in years past: Frank Mahovlich had his 48 goals, and then Lanny McDonald had seasons with 46, 47 and 43; Darryl had 45 one year. And then Gary Leeman scored 51 during the 1989–90 season. Dave Andreychuk became the third Leaf to do it, in 1992–93, although there’s an asterisk of sorts next to that one because he scored 29 of the goals with Buffalo, and then 25 with the Leafs over 83 games. The next season, he scored 53, all of them with the Leafs. So, just the three of us. So far. "Tonight, you saw some backbone when it was needed," Washington coach Barry Trotz said. "It (was) an opportunity for guys to step up and they did. There wasn't any excuses." The four-goal third period came after the team lost forward Jay Beagle to an upper-body injury and center Nicklas Backstrom to an unspecific injury in the second period. Beagle will undergo surgery and miss significant time. Backstrom's injury was not disclosed and he could play Thursday at the Carolina Hurricanes. Washington already was playing without top defenseman John Carlson, out with a lower-body injury. Despite that, the Capitals turned around Buffalo's 2-1 lead quickly. "We are pretty relentless as a team," Washington goalie Braden Holtby said. "(Obviously, the injuries) makes it tougher. Those guys play a huge role on our team but we are just going to have to find different ways to win if they are out. To overcome the shortcomings of simple metrics for evalu- ating player performance, recent works have introduced more advanced metrics that take into account the context of the players' actions and per- form look-ahead. However, as ice hockey is a team sport, knowing about individual ratings is not enough and coaches want to identify players that play particularly well together. In this paper we therefore extend earlier work for evaluating the performance of players to the related problem of evaluating the performance of player pairs. We experiment with data from seven NHL seasons, discuss the top pairs, and present analyses and insights based on both the absolute and relative ice time together. Keywords: Sports analytics · Data mining · Player valuation. 1 Introduction In the field of sports analytics, many works focus on evaluating the performance of players. A commonly used method to do this is to attribute values to the different actions that players perform and sum up these values every time a player performs these actions. These summary statistics can be computed over, for instance, games or seasons. In ice hockey, common summary metrics include the number of goals, assists, points (assists + goals) and the plus-minus statistics (+/-), in which 1 is added when the player is on the ice when the player's team scores (during even strength play) and 1 is subtracted when the opposing team scores (during even strength). More advanced measures are, for instance, Corsi and Fenwick1. However, these metrics do not capture the context of player actions and the impact they have on the outcome of later actions.

He is the second consecutive Hobey winner from Hockey East, as Boston College’s Johnny Gaudreau claimed the prize in 2014. Eichel becomes the first freshman winner of the Hobey Baker since Maine’sPaul Kariya won the award in 1993 after scoring 100 points (25g, 75a) in his rookie campaign for the Black Bears. Eichel’s 70 points this year (26g, 44a) is the highest total for an NCAA rookie since Kariya.
