82 APRIL 2018 APRIL 2018 83 “ A bird-brained movie to cheer the hearts of the far right wing,” sneered Vincent Canby in the 25 July 1974 edition of The New York Times. The movie he was reviewing was Death Wish, a new crime thriller directed by Michael Winner, in which Winner’s frequent cohort, Charles Bronson, embarked on a vigilante crusade in New York, incited by the murder of his wife and rape of his daughter. And Canby wasn’t alone in his disdain. Variety called it “a poisonous incitement to do-it- yourself law enforcement”. Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times thought its message was “scary”. But Death Wish was unstoppable. In the US, the $3 million movie grossed $22 million and was followed by four sequels, two now infamous for their extreme sexual violence. The fnal one, 1994’s Death Wish V: The Face Of Death, was Bronson’s fnal big-screen role. Even without him, the series refused to die, as the fact there’s a new remake incoming attests. It has, however, taken time to arrive. In 2006, it was announced that Sylvester Stallone would star in and direct a new Death Wish; when he left the project, Joe Carnahan (The A-Team) took over. That version languished in development hell too, and is only now circling the roles of Benjamin and police making it to the screen, directed by Eli DEATHWISH (1974) chief Frank Ochoa. But time went on, Roth from Carnahan’s script and starring It could all have been very different. -

Martyrdom and the American-Muslim Imagination In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Grantor of Mercy The topic of martyrdom in general, and certainly in Islam, is very sensitive. One can never be too clear about things these days, so before delving into the topic I want to state clearly my own position: I categorically and unconditionally condemn the killing of noncombatants by anyone, whether state or non-state actors, uniformed military or insurgents. I take the position of Imam Malik and al-Awza’i, that one is not permitted to kill civilians even if it seems necessary to achieve some valid military objective. It is never acceptable. I think it is vital for us as American Muslims to demonstrate our concern for all human beings, not just Americans and not just Muslims. We have to speak and rise up anytime that any of God’s creation is attacked, regardless of whether the victims are Muslims or not. -

Shaffer, Graduate School Representative ABSTRACT TALES FROM THE SILENT MAJORITY: CONSERVATIVE POPULISM AND THE INVENTION OF MIDDLE AMERICA by Jeffrey Christopher Bickerstaff In this dissertation I show how the conservative movement lured the white working class out of the Democratic New Deal Coalition and into the Republican Majority. I argue that this political transformation was accomplished in part by what I call the "invention" of Middle America. Using such cultural representations as mainstream print media, literature, and film, conservatives successfully exploited what came to be known as the Social Issue and constructed "Liberalism" as effeminate, impractical, and elitist. Chapter One charts the rise of conservative populism and Middle America against the backdrop of 1960s social upheaval. I stress the importance of backlash and resentment to Richard Nixon's ascendancy to the Presidency, describe strategies employed by the conservative movement to win majority status for the GOP, and explore the conflict between this goal and the will to ideological purity. In Chapter Two I read Rabbit Redux as John Updike's attempt to model the racial education of a conservative Middle American, Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, in "teach-in" scenes that reflect the conflict between the social conservative and Eastern Liberal within the author's psyche. I conclude that this conflict undermines the project and, despite laudable intentions, Updike perpetuates caricatures of the Left and hastens Middle America's rejection of Liberalism. -

INTRODUCTION “Law and order” became a potent theme in American politics in the 1960s. With that simple phrase, politicians evoked a litany of troubles plaguing the country, from street crime to racial unrest, urban riots, and unruly student protests. Calling for law and order became a shorthand way of expressing contempt for everything that was wrong with the modern permissive society and calling for a return to the discipline and values of the past. The law and order rallying cry also signified intense opposition to the Supreme Court’s expansion of the constitutional rights of accused criminals. In the eyes of law and order conservatives, judges needed to stop coddling criminals and letting them go free on legal technicalities. In 1968, Richard Nixon made himself the law and order candidate and won the White House, and his administration continued to trumpet the law and order theme and blame weak-kneed liberals, The William R. On multitasking, craftsmanship, and letting go of your work Musician and visual artist Jacob Bannon on balancing the demands of running a record label with a creative practice, and what it means to put things out into the world and let them have their own life. You seem to be constantly multitasking—moving between bands and your label, your fine art stuff, and your design work. From an outsider’s perspective, it seems like that could get chaotic. How do you manage it? There’s some times when it can feel a little daunting, but it’s all about organization and timing. There are some times where, all of a sudden, you’ll look at what you’ve done and you think that you have a free and clear schedule for a little while. And you then look at your to-do list and you realize that you have six little things that aren’t really so little that you have to deal with. Today is a good example, so I’ll walk you through my day: Wake up in the morning, hang out with the family, make them breakfast and coffee and stuff. Head out for the day, come to the Deathwish office, try to get through my emails for a few hours, because that alters your day, obviously. Then I have two Deathwish records for upcoming releases that I had to format for CD and cassette that I’ve already done the vinyl designs for and had those approved. -
