  • Banjo Bob Doherty, Formerly of the Tipsy Rovers, Now Lead Singer for the Kingston Trio
Banjo Bob Doherty, formerly of the Tipsy Rovers, now Lead Singer for the Kingston Trio. Sure looks like it! Narrative by Donna Doherty: This is cover of a book that is about 15 years old, signed by the members of the trio back then and belonging to Bob Shane. Could this week get any better? It was presented to Bob last night as his trio won the award for best camper trio of the year. Narrative by Donna Doherty: For Bob’s 70th birthday his family presented him with a trip to the Kingston Trio’s Fantasy Camp. Here's a quick overview camp life: There are only 33 campers. Concerts on each of 4 nights. First 8 or 9 campers have the opportunity of a lifetime (make that dream). They play a song, chosen ahead of time, with the trio. Bob Shane (founder) sings a song or two. 8 or 9 trio groups perform. Some of the campers return year after year and have established groups. Never have 3 newbies been grouped together until this year. Bobs group, "The Common Folk" included a woman from OK and a guy from Nebraska. We have had an awesome 7 days with some of the friendliest people I've ever met. The Video For the first 1:50 of the video, the spotlight was fiercely focused on Banjo Bob, but after that the lighting was adjusted for a much better view. The song they are singing is “Three Jolly Coachmen”, from the very first Kingston Trio album in 1958. Here are the lyrics: One, two, and three jolly coachmen sat at an English tavern.

Fans of legendary folk icons The Kingston Trio can re-discover their timeless music all over again. Just out of country picked the song up and and clamored for Capitol Records to college, Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and Dave Guard took dormant folk release it as a single. Capitol's vice president, Voyle Gilmore, called Frank music and gave it a comic twist irresistible to the college crowd (and just Werber in Hawaii. "Get those boys back here," about everyone else). The music was rooted in American Popular culture, he said, "It looks like you're going to have the record of the year." but performed with a refreshing style that now seems timeless.

  • THE BEAUTIFUL WORLD of the BROTHERS FOUR - the Brothers Four (Seattle Works Entertainment) by Michael Mcdowell, Editor, Blitz Magazine
THE BEAUTIFUL WORLD OF THE BROTHERS FOUR - The Brothers Four (Seattle Works Entertainment) By Michael McDowell, Editor, Blitz Magazine “We’re still busy with lots of singing and traveling.” So said Bob Flick, bassist, co-founder and sole active original member of the pioneering folk rock quartet, the Brothers Four. The fruits of their labor are evidenced in abundance in this, their most recent release, and their first since their acclaimed Golden Anniversary collection in 2010. The Beautiful World Of The Brothers Four features a healthy mix of highlights from the band’s fruitful tenure with Columbia Records, as well as several sympathetic covers and a generous helping of new originals. Interestingly enough, some of the cover material is drawn from the repertoires of artists who came up through the folk boom of the late 1950s and early 1960s, as did the Brothers Four. To wit, the band herein respectfully revisits the Harry Belafonte/Kingston Trio staple, Scarlet Ribbons, as well as Belafonte’s Jamaica Farewell (which the Brothers Four had previously attempted on their The Big Folk Hits LP for Columbia) the Bob Dylan-penned Wonder Who/Peter, Paul And Mary classic Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright, the Kingston Trio/Pete Seeger/Dave Van Ronk staple All My Trials, the great Rolf Harris’ Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport (as Kangaroo Sing-Along) and the often recorded (Peter, Paul And Mary, the Journeymen, the Kingston Trio, the Highwaymen, Bobby Bare, the Seekers, Jackie DeShannon, Sonny and Cher and others) 500 Miles. During their association with Columbia, such emphasis on material readily associated with others of like minded artistic vision (with the exception of their aforementioned The Big Folk Hits album) would have been unlikely, given the resolve of all concerned at that time to establish their respective legacies with at least a modicum of individuality.

the 1987 Grammy for Album of the Year. Ladysmith Black Mambazou, too, would Swansongs win Grammy Awards—five in all, the last in 2018 for Shaka Zulu Revisited: 30th Anniversary Celebration as Best World Music Album. They would also collaborate with the likes of Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and Mavis Staples, and appear in the Michael Jackson filmMoonwalker . They earned a Tony nomination for their score for the 1993 Broadway play The Song of Jacob Zulu, in which they performed as a chorus. And that same year, they accompanied Nelson Mandela to Oslo when he accepted his Nobel Peace Prize. Bhekizizwe Joseph Siphatimandla Mxo- veni Mshengu Bigboy Shabalala was born on Aug. 28, 1941, on a white-owned farm near the town of Ladysmith, out in the hills of KwaZulu-Natal, where his parents, Jon- athan Mluwane Shabalala and Nomandla Elina Shabalala, worked. Joseph, the eldest of eight children, left school at 12, after his father died. As a teenager, he moved to Durban to work in a textile factory and sang in local vocal groups—the Durban Choir Swansongs and The Highlanders. In 1959, he formed Ezimnyama, which he renamed Ladysmith Black Mambazo. They featured several of Shabalala’s brothers and cousins singing. The mbube and isicathamiya music that the all-male group sang originally emerged from the mining camps and industrial worksites created by migrant workers toiling far from home. Singing late into the 1947-2019 night, they established harmony singing contests to relieve their after-work boredom. These contests played a significant role in the development of traditional choral music 1941-2020 in South Africa.

  • "Tom Dooley" (The Kingston Trio)
“Tom Dooley”—The Kingston Trio (1958) Added to the National Registry: 2008 Essay by William J. Bush (guest post)* Tom Dula Original label The Kingston Trio It is one of the great surprises (some might say flukes) of popular music: a simple two- chord song about a confederate veteran named Tom Dula who stabbed his cheating girlfriend, Laura Foster, in a jealous rage and was hanged in Statesville, North Carolina, in 1868, igniting the great Folk Music Revival of the late 50s and early 60s. While the song is credited to numerous sources, including old time banjoist Frank Proffitt, and even his Aunt Nancy Prather, the song has its origins in North Carolina in the late 1860s and maybe even earlier. Even more unlikely, the song propelled three newly-graduated college students into international stardom, the likes of which was matched only by the Beatles years later. The song, of course, was “Tom Dooley” recorded by The Kingston Trio--Dave Guard, Nick Reynolds and Bob Shane--who quickly became one of America's most popular and influential folk music groups. Guard and Shane were born in Hawaii and met at Honolulu's pricey Punahou School, which later became Barrack Obama's alma mater. Reynolds was born in San Diego, the son of a Navy Captain, and raised across the bay in Coronado, California. Shane and Reynolds would meet in 1955 at Menlo School of Business Administration, near Stanford where Dave Guard was a business major. Soon the three came together in various trio and quartet permutations, and eventually evolved into the Kingston Trio.

From day one, there were three young kids literally growing up at the elbows of The Kingston Trio: Josh Reynolds, the son (and doppelganger) of Nick Reynolds. Mike Marvin, Josh’s cousin and adopted son of Nick. And Tim Gorelangton, Josh & Mike's lifetime friend and one of the only people outside the Kingston Trio with whom Nick Reynolds ever recorded. These “Sons of Nick” went on to pursue different successful careers but always remained close, playing and singing the Trio collection whenever they could. Josh became recognized as one of the world’s leading commercial producers. Mike became a Hollywood writer/ director/producer as well as a contemporary painter. Tim followed his musical destiny performing his music as well as with Mike in The Manzanita Jungle in the ‘70s. John Stewart, Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie song catalogs are a major part of Tim’s repertoire. The three worked hard to balance their music and professional careers while also raising families. The unspoken hope was to someday re-unite and carry the Kingston Trio legacy to a new level. That time has come. With the rising resurgence of folk music and the Kingston Trio brand now secure in their rightful hands, Josh, Mike & Tim are able to return full-time to their first love---folk music. They have emerged onto today's music scene as The Kingston Trio 3.0. No mere tribute band, but a true musical heritage continued. Complete with striped shirts and genes. Within this new group thrives the lively joy of music performance and infectious humor that won over audiences throughout the world.

Katherine and I attended the Broward Folk Festival this year held at the Hugh Birch Taylor State Park in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The weather was foreboding most of the weekend, but we attended the event on Sunday, January 27th. It was cloudy, cooler than normal temperatures, but fortunately the rain held off until later in the evening. We had the opportunity to see quite a few singer/songwriters perform from around the country. Our favorites were House of Hamill from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and The Nouveaux Honkies from Knoxville, Tennessee. These were two younger performing groups featuring excellent fiddling as well as nice harmonies – there was a wide variety of musical talent and styles to please everyone.
