Canada ABSTRACT Can colonised peoples in Africa use languages of their colonisation without re-insaibing thev own colonisafion and/or losing their own languages and cultures? This is one of the questions at the centre of the debate about the use of English in postcolonial Mca. The debate is concerned with whether or not to use English to express Afncan cultural identities. Some critics reject English for its complicity in colonialism. In this argument, English is regarded as a threat to indigenous languages and cultures. On the other hand, some critics view English as a permanent' feature of postcolonial Africa and also as a language which connects Africa to the rest of the world. In this perspective English is useful for pragmatic purposes. Thus there is usually an either/or response to the question about English. For me, the answer lies in a both/and ewplanation. That is, in the use of both the colonial and indigenous languages. A both/and perspective allows for the exploration of the contradictions of postcolo~didentity. Using Amakhosi theatre of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, 1 explore the way in which postcolonial identity in Zimbabwe takes shape at the intersection of the colonial and the indigenous languages. The spaœ where Engliçh and the indigenous language, here Ndebele, intersect is conceptualWd as a hybnd space. Exploring this space is useful for understanding colonial and postalonid experiences. The study is also necessary for understanding postcolonial agency, that is, the ways in which colonised people position themçelves in relation to the colonial experience and the ways they shape their own identities, cultures and languages. The dissertation illustrates the impulse of internalisaiion of colonial structures as accompanied by the interrogation of the colonial. Using Amakhosi plays, I question the idea of postcoloniai identity as a location of confusion, undecidedness and wealcness. Amakhosi illustrates postcolonial space as productive and creative and as a location where coloniseci people take charge of the formation of their identities, languages and cultures. The hybrid space is also conceptualised as an ambivalent spaœ, that is, as a space where English is challenged and accommodated simultaneously. The space also marks the assertion of Ndebele. But at same time Ndebele is asserted and reclaimed, it is also adapted and changed. The hybnd space announces a new language and new culture which is always being fonned and fabricated. As an educator 1 am interesteci in the rdevance of the hybrid space for the conception of a curriculum for Zimbabwe. 1 argue that a cunidum for postcolonial Zimbabwe will have to be hybrid, that is, it will have to incorporate the colonial and the indigene.   • Jazz in Service of the Struggle: the New Brighton Story
    JAZZ IN SERVICE OF THE STRUGGLE: THE NEW BRIGHTON STORY by DIANE THRAM Abstract. This article contributes to the substantial body of publications on South African jazz with information on jazz performance and performers in New Brighton, a township adjacent to Port Elizabeth noted for its vibrant jazz scene and outstanding jazz musicians. The article covers several decades from the heyday of swing bands in the 1940s–50s through the 1960s–70s when New Brighton’s premier jazz combo, the Soul Jazzmen, were at the height of their artistry. The role of swing bands in New Brighton and surrounding communities as the training ground for members of the Soul Jazzmen and other local musicians of note is discussed, as well as how the Soul Jazzmen in turn were tutors for musicians of the next generation who became widely recognized artists, composers and arrangers. This is followed by a focus on the Soul Jazzmen and compositions by its members that protested against the apartheid regime in the 1960s–70s. The article is informed by historic photographs, newspaper clippings and information from oral history interviews that richly document how jazz was performed in service of the anti-apartheid struggle in New Brighton. It covers mainly the colonial period and to a limited extent the first ten years of independence. The article analyses music-making and performance as cultural production. The musicians involved in the process of cultural production are characterised as 'cultural workers', that is, professional and non-professional, commercial and non- commercial, rural and traditional, urban and modern individuals, whose occupation or part of their occupation involves culture. Signed: Date: 28 August 2016 2 Abstract This thesis presents an inquiry into the discursive construction of South African exile in jazz practices during the 1960s. Focusing on the decade in which exile coalesced for the first generation of musicians who escaped the strictures of South Africa’s apartheid regime, I argue that a lingering sense of connection (as opposed to rift) produces the contrapuntal awareness that Edward Said ascribes to exile. This thesis therefore advances a relational approach to the study of exile: drawing on archival research, music analysis, ethnography, critical theory and historiography, I suggest how musicians’ sense of exile continuously emerged through a range of discourses that contributed to its meanings and connotations at different points in time. The first two chapters situate South African exile within broader contexts of displacement. I consider how exile built on earlier forms of migration in South Africa through the analyses of three ‘train songs’, and developed in dialogue with the African diaspora through a close reading of Edward Said’s theorization of exile and Avtar Brah’s theorization of diaspora. A case study of the Transcription Centre in London, which hosted the South African exiles Dorothy Masuku, Abdullah Ibrahim, and the Blue Notes in 1965, revisits the connection between exile and politics, broadening it beyond the usual national paradigm of apartheid politics to the international arena of Cold War politics.

    Aggrey Klaaste: The Relentless Community-Builder A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Creative Writing of Rhodes University by Phakama Mbonambi February 2014 ii ABSTRACT This thesis looks at the life and times of Aggrey Klaaste, the larger-than-life late editor of Sowetan who shot to fame by championing a novel idea of nation building. His initiative started in 1988 as flames of violence engulfed South Africa and it seemed as if an apocalypse was on the cards. Sickened by what the frustrated black community was doing to itself, for example the use of the dreadful practice of necklacing against the so-called collaborators, he called for moral regeneration. He wanted his compatriots to look into the future and take their destiny in their own hands. Through nation building he tirelessly launched into crusading journalism that sought to heal the scars of the black community after decades of apartheid. It was grassroots community building. He rewarded ordinary men and women who made a difference in their communities. He actively sought peace to end the violence of the 1980s and 1990s. He spoke his mind without wearing any ideological blinkers, even as some thought his initiative would disturb the march to freedom. He was the ultimate newspaperman. This thesis argues that by calling for reconciliation and rebuilding of battered black communities even before freedom came, Klaaste was ahead of his time and even predated Nelson Mandela. Klaaste preferred to do what was right and not be shackled to any ideology.

    Hugh Masekela Biography Ever since the day in 1954 when Archbishop Trevor Huddleston gave him his trumpet, Masekela has played music that closely reflects his beginnings as a little boy in Witbank. The street songs, church songs, migrant labour work songs, political protest songs and the sounds of the wide cross-section of ethnic culture South Africa possesses from Xhosa, Zulu, Swazi, Khoi, San, Griqua, Sotho and Tswana peoples of the South, South East, Central and Western Regions to the Ndebele, Tsonga, Venda and Pedi provinces of the North and North West. The urban sounds of the townships, the influences of the Manhattan Brothers, Dorothy Masuka, the Dark City Sisters, the Mahotella Queens and Mahlathini, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Miriam Makeba, Spokes Mashiyane, Lemmy Mabaso, Elijah Nkwanyana, Kippie Moeketsi, Mackay Davashe, all these form an intrinsic part of his musical roots, intertwined with vivid portraits of the struggles and the sorrows, the joys and passions of his country. After Huddleston asked the leader of the Johannesburg "Native" Municipal Brass Band, Uncle Sauda to teach him the rudiments of trumpet playing, Hugh quickly proceeded to master the instrument after having been inspired by the film "Young man with a horn" in which Kirk Douglas portrayed the great American Jazz trumpeter, Bix Beiderbecke. Soon, some of his music ? loving schoolmates also became interested in playing instruments, leading to the formation of the Huddleston Jazz Band, South Africa's very first youth orchestra formed at St. Peters Secondary School where the anti-apartheid priest was chaplain. Huddleston was deported by the racist government of the time for his emancipation militancy and when Hugh kept on badgering him to help him leave the oppressive country for music education opportunities abroad, the priest worked very hard to get him to England.
