Weekly Notes 072817
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31). -

Brandon Belt
BRANDON BELT • Born April 20, 1988, in Nacogdoches, Texas, in a house his father built. • Parents are Darrell and Janice (pronounced Ja-neece). He has one younger brother, Cameron. Father is a geometry teacher at Brandon’s high school, Hudson High in Lufkin. His mother is a hairdresser. • As a senior at Hudson High, Belt earned district MVP, All-State and All-Amer- ica honors. Standout pitcher – thought he’d make the major leagues in that position. • Had a verbal agreement with Cubs coming out of high school to be drafted in high rounds and paid high-round money. But Cubs didn’t come through and Red Sox drafted him the 11th round. Disappointed, Belt went to college instead. “Everything I went through happened for a reason,’’ he says. “I’m so happy I went to college. I matured so much as a baseball player and as a per- son and I made so many friends.’’ • Played one year for San Jacinto College in Houston before transferring to University of Texas. (Same two colleges Roger Clemens attended.) Majored in education. Helped propel Texas to the College World Series in 2009, where the Longhorns lost in the Championship game to LSU. • Injuries as a junior at University of Texas forced him to give up pitching altogether. When his hitting dropped off – he was barely hitting .300 two-thirds into his junior year – Brandon sank to the lowest point in his life. He had always wanted to be a pro baseball player and now he was wondering if he would make it. -
Minor League Transactions: Sept. 26-Oct. 2
Minor League Transactions: Sept. 26-Oct. 2 • The first wave of free agents entered the marketplace on Oct. 1 as 43 players elected free agency, the majority of them under Article XX(D) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. It reads in part: “Any player who has at least three years of major league service, or who qualified as a “Super Two” player . and whose contract is assigned outright to a minor league club may elect, in lieu of accepting such assignment, to become a free agent. In the event that such a player with at least three years of major league service does not elect free agency in lieu of accepting such assignment, he may elect free agency between the end of the then current major league season and the next following Oct. 15, unless such player is returned to a major league roster prior to making such election.” • The recalls in this installment are paperwork moves owing to the fact that, with the minor league season and playoffs concluded, players can no longer be sent on optional assignments. According to MLR 11(b)4 “A Major League Club may recall a player not to report after the conclusion of the championship season of the Minor League Club to which the player is on optional assignment but no later than October 1” Arizona Diamondbacks Signed: RHP Seth Lintz (Laredo (American Association)), RHP Dustin Loggins (Kansas City (American Association)), RHP Jacob Roberts (Bridgeport (Atlantic)), LHP Sean Mahley (Schaumburg (Frontier)), OF Dan Bowman (Lake Erie (Frontier)), OF Steve McQuail (Schaumburg (Frontier)) Elected free agency: -
A's News Clips, Monday, October 26, 2009 Grading the 2009
A’s News Clips, Monday, October 26, 2009 Grading the 2009 baseball predictions: Buzz Ryan had Giants/A’s nailed, whoever he is Posted by Tim Kawakami, San Jose Mercury News, 10/24/09 The predictions were made last April by five Merc writers. Some of us are still writing for the Merc; several who made these wise guesses are not. And that’s a great, undeniable loss of the Merc. Amazing and depressing how the world changes in just one baseball season. OK. On to the review of our baseball picks, which I always do because I like to see who got it right, what the expectations were generally, how the local teams and players performed vs. our guesses, and who stunk it up bad. (Often me.) Why make pre-season predictions if you don’t go back and see how they look after the season? Summary: I can’t believe it, but the guy who used to be Buzz Ryan just crushed everybody else. I made fun of him a bit when he predicted that the Giants would be good and I was incorrect. That almost never happens! He was right on the Giants. Right on the A’s (guessed that they’d be under .500, the rest of us said over. .500. Right on Philadelphia in the World Series (nobody else had a single potential WS contestant, including LAA OR Yankees). John Ryan: Your moment is here. Whoever you are. —THE PREDICTIONS and RESULTS/ -Giants win-loss record: Miedema 79-83, Killion 80-82, TK 78-84, Purdy 80-82, Ryan 85-77. -
