Faminialagao1 1National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, 101 Corporate Bldg., Mother Ignacia St., South Triangle, Quezon City ABSTRACT Assessment of fisheries in Taal Lake was conducted from 1996-2000 and 2008-2011 to know the status of the commercially important fishes with emphasis on the endemic freshwater sardine,Sardinella tawilis. Results of the fish landed catch survey in 11 coastal towns of the lake showed a decreasing fish harvest in the open fisheries from 1,420 MT to 460 MT in 1996 to 2011. Inventory of fisherfolk, boat, and gear also decreased to 16%, 7%, and 39%, respectively from 1998 to 2011. The most dominant gear is gill net which is about 53% of the total gear used in the lake with a declining catch per unit effort (CPUE) of 11kg/day to 4 kg/day from 1997 to 2011. Active gear such as motorized push net, ring net, and beach seine also operated in the lake with a CPUE ranging from 48 kg/day to 2,504 kg/day. There were 43 fish species identified in which S. tawilis dominated the catch for the last decade. However, its harvest also declined from 744 to 71 mt in 1996 to 2011. The presence of alien species such as jaguar fish, pangasius, and black-chinned tilapia amplified in 2009. -

Briones1, 2, 3,4 ABSTRACT Fish parasites are ecological important because of their significant contributions to ecosystem integrity. This has gained the attention of both scientists and policy makers globally, but is not yet as evident in the Philippine setting. This is because the practical application of such knowledge requires a strong basal foundation on parasite biodiversity research, which has waned in the country in the last decades because of the retirement and passing of many prominent Filipino parasitologists. We aimed to contribute to the information on Philippine fish parasite biodiversity by surveying the par- asites of various littoral fish species in Lake Taal - the third largest lake in the country. Fish were sampled in the lake from July to September 2015 through the aid of local fish- ermen, who employed gill nets and beach seines in the lake’s littoral areas. From these, 711 specimens were gathered and necropsied for helminth endo-parasites. Parasites were retrieved from 4 of 16 fish species, with low prevalence and mean burden ob- served. Three parasite genera were identified, namely Opegaster sp. (Platyhelminthes: Opecoelidae), Camallanus sp. (Nematoda: Camallanidae), and Andracantha sp. (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae). Andracantha sp. is the first report of its genera from KEY WORDS : Philippine fish, providing a contribution to the present Philippine parasite biodiversity listing, while Opegaster sp. represents a potential target species for biological lake Andracantha monitoring because of its wide presence among gobiids throughout the country, as well Opegaster as its transmission specificity. -

BAUN Abstract Sardines (Clupeidae) make up a substantial proportion of the fish catch across the Philippines and consequently are the most accessible source of animal protein for millions of Filipinos. Further, this fishery is an economic engine providing thousands of jobs and generating revenue at the individual, municipal, and national levels. Ecologically, sardines are basally positioned in a food web that supports pelagic tuna and mackerel, as well as numerous sea birds and marine mammals. Philippine sardine biodiversity is among the highest in the world and includes the only known freshwater sardine species. -

Several waterbodies have been declared as natural wetlands in the country supporting the needs of community like water and food. In this study, 65 natural wetlands were considered including six sites that were identified as ‘Wetlands of International Importance’ such as Naujan Lake National Park, Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary, Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary, Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area and Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. There are 22 wetland types presented in this research categorizing the Philippine wetlands. Philippine wetlands are now facing tremendous challenges such as land use conversion, abuse of resources, pollution coming from domestic, industrial and agricultural activities, and climate change. This paper provides an overview of Philippine wetlands in terms of their characteristics and components, impacts in the ecosystem, and the challenges they are dealing with. -

Limnology of Lake Wood: an Ancestral Lake of the Subanen Tribe

Magbanua2 1Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology; 2Institute of Biology University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City 1101 Philippines 3Department of Biological Sciences, College of Science; and Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences and the Graduate School University of Santo Tomas, Manila 1015 Philippines Relatively limited information exists on Lake Wood’s limnology and ecology, an ancestral lake of the Subanens. Here, we provide a limnological characterization of the lake – exploring its physical, chemical, and biological features. The data on lake morphometry were gathered using an echosounder; lower depth water samples were collected using a Niskin water sampler for physicochemical analyses while surface water samples were collected at five sampling sites for phosphate (PO4) analysis; and zooplankton samples were collected at several depths through vertical towing in March–April 2019. Lake Wood, located at 320 m above sea level, has an extensive surface area covering 7.38 km2 with a maximum depth of 85 m. Lake water comes from rainfall, small rivers, and groundwater and empties into the Dumanquilas Bay via its only outlet – the Biswangan River. Land use of the lake is predominantly cultivated land. Moreover, based on the trophic state index (TSI), the lake’s current trophic status is eutrophic. During the study periods, thermocline and oxycline formed at 15 m below the surface of the lake. -

INTRODUCTION The Philippines, the world’s second largest archipelago after Indonesia, covers a land area of about 300,000 km2 [1]. It is one of the 17 megadiversity countries, which between themselves contain 70 to 80 percent of global biodiversity [2]. Philippine rainforest is home to more than 1130 terrestrial wildlife species (Table 1) and between 10,000-13,000 species of plants [3] so far recorded, of which more than half are found nowhere else in the world. As such, the Philippines has also been described as Galapagos times ten [4]. It is also one of 25 global biodiversity hotspots [5, 6] with more than 97 percent of its original forest cover lost [7, 8]. In fact more original forests were lost in the last 50 years of the 20th century than what was lost in the previous 450 years combined [9]. Yet more new species are still being discovered on these islands than any other areas on earth in recent times [e.g., see 10, 11] Table 1. ALLEN Australian Museum, Sydney, Australia Currently over 4000 species of fishes are known from Australia. An analysis ofdistribution patterns of 3800 species is presented. Over 20% of the species are endemic to Australia, with endemic species occuiring primarily in southern Australia. There is also a small component of the fauna which is found only in the southwestern Pacific (New Caledonia, Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island and New Zealand). The majority of the other species are widely distributed in the western Pacific Ocean. South Pacific Commission, Nouméa, New Caledonia The Oceanic Fisheries Programme of the South Pacific Commission is currently pursuing a research project on age and growth of two tropical tuna species, yellowfm tuna (Thunnus albacares) and bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus). The daily periodicity of microincrements forrned with the sagittal otoliths of these two spceies has been validated by oxytetracycline marking in previous studies. These validation studies have come from fishes within three regions of the Pacific (eastem, central and western tropical Pacific). Otolith microincrements are counted along transverse section with a light microscope. -
